Greetings Mr. Bardwell, I come to you hat in hand in hopes of solving a problem I'm having with my Emax Hawk 5. I'm relatively new to the game of drone piloting but am a fast enthusiast. I have to also say I've learned a lot watching your you tube videos, from using simulators, learning to fpv, beginning acro flying, etc. Having picked up an Eachine EX2 mini, JJRC Heron X9 and a couple of other toy grade quads in a years time, I figured I'd go ahead and get real and purchased the Hawk 5. However, after several months of wrestling with it still no maiden flight. The problem I'm having about $500 in after purchasing quad, a Taranis QX7 and all the peripherals, is I can't get the control sticks to register in Betaflight. The switch and beeper settings move the graphic bars just fine in the Receiver tab but I get nothing for throttle, yaw, pitch and roll when I manipulate the sticks. Everything else checks out in the other tabs, ports, config, etc. and the motors spin up just fine too but after meticulously creating several clean models it does the same thing each time. Apparently the the flight controller is receiving commands from the XM+ receiver since the AUX channels are working. I also just bought a Tinyhawk Freestyle just to ensure it isn't a problem with the transmitter. The Freestyle worked swimmingly minutes out of the box and flies great. I'm stumped so I opened a service ticket with Emax and the nice gent working with me although diligent seems close to his wits end calling the problem "very strange", so I'm hoping you may have an idea or ideally just know what the solution might be as you are heralded in the community as the go to guy for knowing it all regarding UAVs. Any ideas O wisened sir? Your grey matter would be greatly appreciated in this matter. Thanks much.

Looked to me like cornering, response, punchout, and propwash were also affected. Love the content, thanks.
@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
Propwash is affected because the quad is simply moving faster. Cornering is affected because the altitude control is way more sensitive to throttle and pitch input at higher uptilt.

I have a hawk 5 and I made the mistake of buying a micro eagle cam . It's a great camera, but the connector bumps into the FC at 30 degrees (ITS DRIVING ME NUTS). I plan on doing some drilling to move the camera forward, but I'm afraid I'll lose my camera protection. I still think everyone getting into FPV should buy this. It's a little powerful for a beginner, but it's durable as hell and you can't beat the value. There were some OMG crashes that only resulted in a slightly bent prop. Just buy the thing. It's smooth and fast out of the box. This video is what sold me on it. After flying for a couple weeks, I can tell you that this flies even better than the simulator. It turns like it's on rails. That's what people keep saying, and it's true. Very easy to control. I do notice slight prop wash at max throttle punchouts, but I'll be dealing with that later while watching another Bardwell vid. : )

I have also noticed a difference in where your camera is positioned makes a difference in how much angle you have ie if you have a frame where where the cam is closer to the Center of the frame you tend to want more uptilt than if it’s on line with the front motors

YIKES! I'd be more shocked but after your Matty video mentioning his 60 degrees of camera up tilt, I tried it on the Free Rider FPV Simulator that YOU taught me how to fly quads on. THANKS!!. And was amazed. A tad horrified, At those tilt angles, you are COMMITTED to going fast when lapping a track. If you try and slow down, you can''t see where you're going. Nitpicking, it doesn't make the quad go faster. It just makes it have to go faster when holding altitude at the 55 degree pitch angle t that will appear level to the pilot. And altitude doesn't get tricky because of the throttle sensitivity, it's because when you have up tilt greater than 45 degrees, more of the lift vector from the props starts to go in the horizontal (go faster) direction, and less goes in the vertical (go up) direction. At 90 degrees, no amount of throttle is going to make you go up. At zero degrees, no amount of throttle will make you go faster. So now fine throttle movements aren't going to do nearly as much as with much less tilt, but yeah, it's gonna be really sensitive to pitch, and you might need to change pitch for a quick altitude adjustment, which could make for some nasty behavior with overshoot, and the pilot induced oscillations, as the pilot tries to correct. So fine altitude control is a bitch. You should have done some acro moves, because like your other video showed, it can put maneuver's in a different world, because as you pointed out, you're looking into looping maneuvers, to make rolls appear like rolls even takes some finesse, because of how much roll turns into yaw from the camera view, and when climbing vertical obstacles like buildings, a steep camera angle makes it look like you're flying up the buildingn, rather than climbing in a hover next to it. And flying up it is a cool illusion. When I first saw Matty do that loop following the square underside of that bridge, I was like WTF? QUESTION: WHAT UP TILT IS GENERALLY USED AT THE TOP LEVELS OF GP RACING? PRETTY HIGH BY NECESSITY, BUT THIS HIGH? OH AND THE GUY BELOW IS TOTALLY WRONG. PEOPLE ARE WATCHING BECAUSE OF YOUR GOOD LOOKS, BECAUSE THE CONTENT IS PRETTY LAME ONLY SO SO.. YOU FLY GOOD TOO. THE SKIRT LIKE OUTFIT PROBABLY ACCOUNTS FOR HALF YOUR SUBSCRIBERS!! LOL I have an extremely sarcastic sense of humor, BTW. LOL
@tehllama426 жыл бұрын
Uptilt varies - Thomas Bitmatta flies closer to 45, and shreds. Evan Turner has been recently experimenting with sub-70, but flies that much or more. ~70 is Shaun Taylor's happy place. The high by necessity is that when a lot of the lap is sticks to the plastic, and only +/- 35degrees vertical FOV, you need more uptilt to see where you're actually going.

Camera tilt is more than most think, if you have a very high angle, and you obviously are flying so you can see straight the whole quad reacts seemingly different due to the angle of the quad.

No, I don’t think so. My thinking is the more that camera is tilted the more you, as the pilot, fly at a much steeper forward pitch angle. The more forward pitch angle you have, your Yaw, and Roll control act upon the quad differently. It’s the axis that changes flight control.

Hello Joshua, thanks for your video. I would like to see in your review, some things i'm interested in. First, do you use the stock receiver ( XSM+) on your hawk 5 ? Then, can you share with us your configuration ( filtering settings + PIDS ). I bought this qwad last week but as I cannot use telemtry I can't tune it on the field and i'm not so satisfied with the stock pids. And last, what Gopro mount do you use and do you turn on the stabilization on your Gopro ? Thanks for your work :)

This is 100% stock PIDs. IMO they are great and do not need tweaking at all. What don't you like about them? I don't use stabilization on the GoPro at all. I don't think it's good for FPV.

That video is not what you see. Its that bottom static covered image with the battery voltages is what you see (though he has his cropped, its not a little bar, its pretty much the same as the Go-Pro, but super static covered and low resolution). Lower resolution = lower bandwidth required = lower latency for a fixed bandwidth.

I keep mine around 55-60 degrees. I just cant bring myself to oitch forward to accelerate hard and I start ballooning corners at lower tilt, I found when I had my camera angle up to those higher angles I was a lot more consistent in keeping the quad low to the ground and at the same altitude around corners for how much roll / yaw I seemed to mix. I can keep a steady altitude with lower cam angles but I just cant really pitch the nose forward for whatever reason, its like a mental block, I just fly to the speed the camera angle carries as I seem to just prefer keeping an even level horizon and not tipping forward
