Becker's solo seems out of place to me... this songs calls for restraint, and Becker's runs showed none of that. would have been more powerful had he stuck with the feel of the piece. Too many sax players these days just like to run the scales to show their virtuosity. Compare his solo to everyone else in the band. Totally out of place. Alas...

Admittedly came into this with low expectations. Sting cover, lots of talent, too ambitious? But why did I wonder. How could Pat, Esbjorn, and Michael not destroy this? Vocals weren't Sting, but they weren't bad at all, I liked the soft touch as a nice variation. Tastefully executed.

@davekingpt10 жыл бұрын
I know some jazz aficionados won't like my comment but I felt that Brecker totally broke the mood (and the drummer followed him down that path). The bassist did an awesome job of kicking it off with just the right energy but with a mellow feel and Pat carried that forward, but Brecker's running up and down the scale with all of his sax squeaks and squawks just blasted this piece to bits. The name of the song is "Fragile" not "smash this". BTW, to bongos added a nice flavor to the bass and vocals, after that he should have just left the stage, if anything the drums detracted from the rest of the piece.
@stealthyf2310 жыл бұрын
I agree with you there. I don't like his choice here. However, it's not so much of him running up and down the scales, but more about which scale really. Pat and the other guys did run some crazy smoking licks, but they were playing "in" alot, so it fits with the accompaniments. They did play out couple times and were suggestive of that dissonance, but not for long so the ears can still relate. However, Brecker, having to go last, took that suggestion and go completely "out." It's one of those things that he chose the dynamic between the artists instead of the audience. For you and me, it's just not the right song to do so. But then that's just us
@hedoniss10 жыл бұрын

She was far too busy, for instance, helping those beings on another planet 2,378 light years away to aid the unfortunates in Paris or San Bernardino. É sério que tem alguém curtindo o barulho do sax no final? A música vinha bem, daí... ficou muito zuado. Quando jazzista não sabe o limite do evitar linha melódica ele acaba por evitar música. Isso é qualquer outra coisa. Escutem o mesmo Pat Metheny tocando 'And i Love Her' ou tocando 'Minuano', aquilo sim é música.

@fullmoon71927 жыл бұрын
*@Marius Dicpertis* ``````````````````````````````` I don't know... Blame dumb, undereducated, illiterate "Yankees" for that. They still believe that there is no other language but "American English" outside of North American continent. Some of those "Country Pumpkins" have never heard of such great singers/songwriters as Sting, Phil Collins, Mark Knopfler etc... Never mind Nils Landgren, Bobo Stenson, or even their own Pat Metheny or Michael Brecker. The first thing they ask a newcomer (especially someone from Eastern Europe or some other "exotic" part of the world) is: "How did you deal with cultural shock when you came to the USA ?" My highly educated Polish friend, and very fluent English speaker usually responded to that: "What are you talking about ? There is no culture around here..." Lol... I suspect that many of those "culturally evolved" individuals still don't know how many high caliber jazz clubs and jazz festivals are being maintained in Europe, not to mention all those North American jazzers who make their decent living thanks to the popularity of jazz outside of USA. The Scandinavian phenomenons such as Bobo Stenson, Niels Landgren, Lars Nielsen, Jan Garbarek etc... not to mention a whole army of Brits, French, German, Polish... and so on... musicians did not came to life by accident. Believe it or not, there is a high caliber jazz outside of the USA my dear "Country Pumpkin Friends" Lol... And..., they do play "off key" from time to time, just like Michael Brecker did in this masterful solo of his (just like any other solo he ever played when he was still among us). And..., finally..., to clarify the issue of who composed the "Fragile", here is the "story": Sting is listed as a sole lyrics writer and composer of the song but, according to some unconfirmed sources, the song was inspired by his Argentinean guitarist Dominic Miller. In short, Sting overheard Dominic's guitar riff (The opening riff of the song) and asked him to play it over and over again. Then, he (Sting) made connection to the historical event of "an American Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua, named Ben Linder, who was murdered by Contras", and the "Fragile" was born. At least that's how the story goes. Please don't quote me whenever you need to prove the facts. It might be just a gossip... 🐳 ♫♫ ❀(~‿~)❀ ♫♫
