Freelander propshaft bearing, replacement my way probably not the best way, but an idea.

"you can see it's bollocksed" proper mechanic that is!

If you put a spacer between the head off the bolt and the joint, as you slacken the bolt you also push the joint off so as to avoid the need for a hammer and risking damage to the needle rollers in the joint.

Before you take the old VCU off, trace round the VCU mountings. This gives a footprint to put the new one back in exactly the same place. Just a thought as I have just done it.

First, don't batter the U/J off the shaft by hitting the boss for the needle rollers. Tomorrows job? Repairing a previously dismantled Freelander drive shaft. Just fit the bolt and lock washer before fitting the shaft, that's a lot easier. Then you can slide in the U washer when fitted Is it a good idea to clamp the viscous coupling in a vice?

I just done mine based on your VT, The only change that I did was, I loosened the nut in the middle, took the u shaped spacer out and screwed the nut back in till I could get enough of a chisel between the nut and the u joint. (I did squirt some penetrating oil in there as well) Then smacked the chisel. I then opened the nut a few turns at a time until the shaft started to come away from the VCU in big gaps. Then kept at it until it was off. Thank you

I have already done mine and yeah it was a B-stard to get the bolts out without a air rachet, I had to lower the wheels to the ground first, make sure you mark the shaft as it is ballanced and should go back on the same position. Good vid though, could have done with seeing it when I first attempted this, saves you a packet. One more thing try and get the more expensive bearings...

Thanks for this, Could you do a video, of first driving with the problem and what it sounds like, (diagnosing the problem) then fixing it and driving it after. cause i have the facelift TD4 HSE, she is great love it, but had a problem for a while with the brakes knocking on breaking, fixed it now, but cost me some cash trying to get the problem.

One more thing I invested in a 17 mil rachet ring spanner.. only a couple of turns needed then undo a little more take out the spacer screw in the nut again and insert a cold chisel to push out the shaft

thanx for the video m8, well explained, i too mark everything up on jobs. did you change the bearings originally because of a loud grinding grumbling sound behind the console?

Nice vid should the VCU be turning the rear wheels when you are not driving off road? I thought it only kicked in when it heated up??
@SiR2Dean3 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to remove the bolt fully, the splined shaft will slide over it, the washer is what keeps it all together 👍

Hi friend was the Landy whining all time as tho the back axle diff was going mines only done 94thou so I don't think I'm that unlucky but the prop bearings seem likely , the diff is sealed as well so I can't change to thicker oil to try mmmmm

hi ok if you have a big vice and if the rear Diff is as you say" a bit to much play B*llocks and your not getting paid for that" NOT WORTH DOING THE VCU IT WILL ONLY FAUL IN TIME , Hope that helps

Boggit and Leggit Garage bloke in another video used a BRAND NEW hammer made of pure copper. I didn't know something useful could be made out of coppers. Mostly you see them with blue lights flashing behind you coming to pick your pockets. Beat shafts with a copper mallet = better than getting shafted by copper.
