My strawberry pie is made with seasonal strawberries and my Homemade Pie Crust, which I cut and lay as a lattice, giving you a beautiful peek-a-boo at those strawberries. A lattice shape works best when baking with strawberries. Strawberries release a lot of liquid when they bake, so your pie top will need to be partially open to let that liquid evaporate. If you use a solid pie crust, you're going to get a soggy bottom!
I also add some grated Granny Smith apple to this pie, which helps soak up a lot of the liquid the strawberries release and gives it another layer of texture.

The strawberries are white! I eat strawberries that are blood red on the inside in my country. Unless this is a different breed, I am not sure what to say.

Sorry but those berries are not ripe. Yes you may have a little bit of white near the top but that is just too much. A great indicator or ripeness is when you split the berry down the middle, they should be red inside up to the hull at the top center. You may have not had ripe berries available at the time of the video. It’s better to educate on what to look for in a ripe berry. This is part of the problem with YT.

Wow this looks delicious, I’m tempted to make a hybrid Strawberry pie where the filling is similar to the strawberry jelly/jam/jello type used in classic strawberry pie with whip cream while maintaining the Checkered Lattice pie crust on top.

You can do that but you may need to par bake the crust prior to adding a no-bake filling. Hope you get on well with it.

I always hull strawberries the way my mother did using a thin bowled teaspoon to pluck out the hull. That way you don’t remove anything but the hull leaving the top edges of the berries intact.

Mmmm. Very much out of season here but I’m watching anyway 😁 My grandparents had a strawberry farm when I was a kid. I must get some of the classic recipes from Gran before it’s too late. They were amazing. No pie though.

Hi Gemma, I always look forward to your videos! I have a question: I just read that to prevent the bottom of a fruit pie from getting soggy you should brush egg wash on the crust before adding the fruit, did you ever hear of that? I so look forward to trying this recipe! --Susan

Hi. Yes, I know the method. You can opt to do that if you’re getting a soggy bottom. I don’t usually do it with my pies, and so far has not had any issue.
