But Hemant, you're doing it wrong. You are supposed to ignore the evil parts, make excuses for the stupid parts, and exaggerate the good parts. You know, ...."context".
@rudra62
@rudra62 4 жыл бұрын
This is precisely why people who read the whole Bible, in the context it was written, cannot take it seriously as a moral, religious book. People who "study" the Bible, have people explain these passages by their Orwellian-named "in context", presupposing that God is real and moral and "loves" them, get an entirely different idea. This is why it is so all-important for believers to go to church, rather than just read the Bible on their own. Those who do cease believing in short order.

@Ron Maimon So God was guiding “human beings as to what to do next”? Yeah, that’s a problem and why I reject your claim that it’s an “excellent moral” book. This God character is immoral, temperamental, inconsistent, childlike, a psycho and sociopath. If he exists, he’s NOT worthy of worship. I’m sure you and I could sit down and write a much better moral and ethical book. But you come across as someone desperately trying to defend a shit piece of literature. Sorry, but it’s hard to take you seriously.
@rudra62

@Ron Maimon So, it's moral to commit genocides. It's moral to sell your daughter into slavery. It's moral to kill unruly children by stoning them at the city gates. I'm "illuminated" in the different aspects of God, even if I don't use it literally or historically. You say this "Yahweh" in the OT is not "God". Hmmm. Okay, then why consider this book "holy" or Godly?
@rudra62
@rudra62 4 жыл бұрын
@Ron Maimon If you want the earliest still-extant book discussing God, you'd have to go to the Rig Veda. People have written about God since the concept came into being - anything that exists is in cave drawings. Slavery was for a lifetime for foreign slaves, or any slave to whom the owner had given a wife, and the slave chose not to leave his wife and children - but instead to be owned for life. What a choice! Leave your family or have a lifetime of bondage (with your family). Genocides were real, according to histories of the others around, and they were common at the time. Real children were no-doubt killed, and some are from the rules in that book to this day. It's sad to have a significant number of people looking to God for a morality that is less than the UN has for war crimes.

It’s really good of God to ‘be with Joseph’ when Joseph was innocently thrown into slavery and also for God to 'be with Joseph' when Joseph is innocently thrown into prison? So with God on your side you can become successful as top slave of the house and also successful as top prisoner of the prison. Nice one God.

@Ron Maimon The whole Christian faith is based on reward. If you are a good Christian you get rewarded by going to heaven? It’s the big carrot reward at the end of the stick of life that you chase all your life. I'm an atheist so any good I do isn't for reward because according to the Christian faith I am going to Hell anyway. So a good atheist is actually a lot better than a reward driven 'I get to go to heaven' good Christian because you have to ask 'How much of the 'good' in any Christian is because God is always watching them and they are so afraid of going Hell'?

The Qur'an's version is also really interesting in how they prove Joseph didn't try to rape her, but that it was actually the other way around. Someone attests: "If his shirt is ripped at the front, he is lying. If it is ripped at the back, he is being truthful." In their version of the story, Zuleika tried to tear his shirt of of him as he was running from her.

Going on what male servants in ancient Egypt wore, the 'cloak' in this translation at 4:10 (Hebrew beged: garment) was most likely a waist-cloth (the rectangular cloth wrapped around the waist, like a kilt). After this was pulled off him, he would have been left only with his under-garment (the ancient Egyptian equivalent of underwear)

@@richardkranium2944 Oh, I'm gonna look for some! I'm not a theist, but I can easily take apart some of the objections made in these videos and mostly small objections that still leave the stories showing what a shit god these people have, but with Joseph it's kind of a big thing to overlook that in this particular story god might have a long term plan and needs to manipulate Joseph's life to build his character. It's still shit because then that means that god uses all of these people to manipulate Joseph into slavery and into jail and the poor back stabbing woman is now a hussy forever only because god controlled her mind and nothing Joseph does will mean anything because he too is just a puppet and god is still a fucking asshole but at least christians have an argument here against Hernant's saying that Joseph's life is shit. In Joseph's eyes he's constantly being rewarded for being the best of all people. The morality of this story is of course that arrogance leads to the American dream and makes you a winner and then god will protect you, always. To a non believer like me, this whole "and god is with him" thing seems more like a short hand for him having talent and not being an asshole anymore and consequently getting lot of respect and trust. And then the story could be about showing how good character and talent can help you get the most out of a bad situation. And I think that more often than not "god" has always been used metaphorically to express such complex ideas.

@exillens
@exillens 4 жыл бұрын
@Ron Maimon Fundamentalists and religious people are synonymous. You're simply splitting hairs to make trivial distinctions. They all have beliefs and "interpret" what's written to force fit their beliefs and call it holy ghost understanding. Example... The bible(NT) has jesus saying no man has seen god. Yet the old testament specifically states Moses would talk to the jewish biblical god "face to face". And Abraham prepared a meal and ate with the jewish biblical god. All religious people of Abrahamic faiths will offer up their own interpretations to try explain away these literal contradictions
@exillens
@exillens 4 жыл бұрын
@Ron Maimon You need to give your definition of a "religious person". Because it just seems as if you're fabricating non existent distinctions. A religious person is someone with a system of beliefs they believe to be divinely authoritated. That's the general description of a religious person. And in being so they interpret sources they deem sacred to fit their system despite the sources having literal details that go against their belief system. Same as "fundamentalists". I really can't break this down any clearer. Catholicism and judaism have this thing called "orthodoxy", which is an entire system based on interpretations agreed upon by consensus in their faith. Calling fundamentalism a "sin" according to them is a contrived statement. A "religious person" and a "fundamentalist" will try to interpret to explain away the literal story of Abraham eating with the jewish biblical god just the same to make it fit with words attributed to the jesus character. I don't see the guy in the video doing that. He's literally simpy commenting on the literature as written

@Ron Maimon Buh? No, that's not what the story says, because its told by people who were biased towards Joseph's perspective of events, based on stories passed on over long periods of time. If speculating on character motivation is a gateway drug to god bothering, then I've already got Star Wars, Halo, The Matrix, and Final Fantasy VII filling those slots.
@capacamaru
@capacamaru 4 жыл бұрын
@Ron Maimon You cannot know that. You couldn't even know that about a modern story even if you asked the author. And its irrelevant. Speculating on character motivations has nothing to do with whether or not the character is fiction or non-fiction. Did Darth Vader think he was doing what was right for the people of the galaxy? Or was he so detached after he thought his wife was dead that he didn't care anymore? Asking myself this question doesn't make me 'believe' in Star Wars. That's patently absurd. The only person who needs any snapping around here is you.

@Ron Maimon Wrong. And wrong. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_literature Much of the bible is based on the Epic of Gilgamesh, which itself was based on people who actually existed. Myths often are based on and around real historical figures. That is part of what they are.

His rule probably would have taken place sometime between 2800 and 2500 BC, though he became a major figure in Sumerian legend during the Third Dynasty of Ur" The only person in this thread talking about the bible as if it were magic is you.

@Ron Maimon Wut. How to tell a compelling story is literally thousands of years older than the bible. None of what it did was new. It is more likely that Joseph was a real person than it is that the bible invented 'realistic characters'. The greeks were doing all of those things in their stories far earlier. The tale of Joseph may be partially based on an Egyptian text from 1200bc. That is around the same time that its thought the Iliad originated (you know, a "morally ambiguous story with a lot of complexity, told with an intent at social reform.")

This is how we know God exists. General revelation and special revelation are the two ways God has chosen to reveal Himself to humanity. General revelation refers to the general truths that can be known about God through nature. Special revelation refers to the more specific truths that can be known about God through the supernatural. In regard to general revelation, Psalm 19:1-4 declares, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” According to this passage, God’s existence and power can be clearly seen through observing the universe. The order, intricacy, and wonder of creation speak to the existence of a powerful and glorious Creator. General revelation is also taught in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-His eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” Like Psalm 19, Romans 1:20 teaches that God’s eternal power and divine nature are “clearly seen” and “understood” from what has been made, and that there is no excuse for denying these facts. With these Scriptures in mind, perhaps a working definition of general revelation would be “the revelation of God to all people, at all times, and in all places that proves that God exists and that He is intelligent, powerful, and transcendent.” Special revelation is how God has chosen to reveal Himself through miraculous means. Special revelation includes physical appearances of God, dreams, visions, the written Word of God, and most importantly-Jesus Christ. The Bible records God appearing in physical form many times (Genesis 3:8, 18:1; Exodus 3:1-4, 34:5-7), and the Bible records God speaking to people through dreams (Genesis 28:12, 37:5; 1 Kings 3:5; Daniel 2) and visions (Genesis 15:1; Ezekiel 8:3-4; Daniel 7; 2 Corinthians 12:1-7). Of primary importance in the revealing of God is His Word, the Bible, which is also a form of special revelation. God miraculously guided the authors of Scripture to correctly record His message to mankind, while still using their own styles and personalities. The Word of God is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). The Word of God is inspired, profitable, and sufficient (2 Timothy 3:16-17). God determined to have the truth regarding Him recorded in written form because He knew the inaccuracy and unreliability of oral tradition. He also understood that the dreams and visions of man can be misinterpreted. God decided to reveal everything that humanity needs to know about Him, what He expects, and what He has done for us in the Bible. The ultimate form of special revelation is the Person of Jesus Christ. God became a human being (John 1:1, 14). Hebrews 1:1-3 summarizes it best, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son … The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being.” God became a human being, in the Person of Jesus Christ, to identify with us, to set an example for us, to teach us, to reveal Himself to us, and, most importantly, to provide salvation for us by humbling Himself in death on the cross (Philippians 2:6-8). Jesus Christ is the ultimate “special revelation” from God.

I remember from my childhood that this cloak does have magic properties. I'm thinking now that "god was with him" just means he was looking and laughing at Joseph totally having the power to get out and make something of himself and Joseph was just content with being a slave and prisoner because it wasn't all too bad for him and that would totally make sense. So many people just take shit every day from others because they repeatedly think it will be over in a minute and it's not that bad, to just repeat it day in day out for the rest of their lives never having a clue that their lives could be infinitely better if they just broke their shackles and took control of their own lives and makes something of it. But sense isn't biblical so this will just turn into a shit show with backwards and warped morality. At least Joseph was being punished for being honorable; that's biblical.

Las point, but, again in the Qur'an, Joseph is said to have been the most beautiful of all the Prophets. God gave him 10% of the beauty in the UNIVERSE, not just on Earth. So we're talking all the prettiest men in the world put together, times about a billion. Women would accidentally hurt themselves because of being distracted by him.

@@ActiveAdvocate1 But now a serious question: Did Joseph cover (i.e. wore hijab) to avoid accidental arousal? (According to Qur'an of course) EDIT: If not, why women should?
@ActiveAdvocate1
@ActiveAdvocate1 4 жыл бұрын
No, but an interesting thing is that the word "hijab" is NEVER ONCE used in the Qur'an to refer to a piece of clothing. The word itself means "barrier", and in the Qur'an, is most often used to refer to a door or to a curtain. A lot of the time in Arabia, in the Prophet's day 9peace be upon him), houses would only be screened from the street by curtains, and if you were a man, you couldn't come across that curtain without the permission of the WOMAN, not the man, of that house. The term also refers to how God covers Its own face: God's hijab is said to be "noor a noor", Arabic for "light on light", and God will only remove this hijab in the presence of believers. In terms of an actual dress code, the Qur'an makes it clear that modesty, just modesty, not full covering or anything like that, is required for ALL sexes, not just women.

There’s purpose in the process. This has to happen in Order for Jospeh to be placed in a position of Power to save the Israelite people. It was God’s purpose for them to be there. How? He was taken to Egypt, bought by a Kings guard and then taken to prison because of this woman in order to be able to be in a position to interpret the King’s dreams. I pray that as you continue to read the Bible our Lord changes your heart. In Jesus name Amen.

A rape conviction would often mean a death sentence. Maybe Potiphar was trying to protect Joseph by putting him in prison, or maybe being jailed instead of executed indicates that this part of the story is false. www.ancient.eu/Egyptian_Law/#:~:text=In%20general%2C%20if%20the%20crime,penalty%20was%20death%20or%20disfigurement.

Yeah, but this was an accusation of attempted rape. There was no distinction between accusations and having actually committed a crime, but perhaps there was a lower sentence of not having succeeded. I think Joseph should've gone with the Trump defence: I failed raping your wife, so there was no crime; I should go free. :p

You completely ignore the fact that he said "How can I so sin against God?" Your shallow, superficial analysis of this episode is truly sad. The whole point of all of this was that Joseph was faithful to God even in the face of severe trial, and God rewarded him in the end by making him second in command over all of Egypt, and saving untold numbers from starvation! But your error is to be expected. "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Cor 2:15.
