1st story: I'm sorry but what? How is she "taking away from others who need the program more"? It's not like these are limited cash benefits or that the school is paying for someone to help so they have less money for someone else. She's getting to record lectures (doesn't cost the school anything). She gets to miss a few extra days (also doesn't really cost the school anything if they are recording the lectures for anyone else & they just send her a copy of them). She gets extra time on exams (also doesn't cost them anything if there is someone else in her class who uses the same benefit as the professor would have to stay for that other person anyway.) These benefits don't sound limited. There doesn't appear to be a set number of openings. Her getting them doesn't take away from someone else. These people sound jelly jelly. NTA

Thank you! Who the hell are they to decide how sick is sick enough? I’m over people with no knowledge or information going, “Well you don’t LOOK or SEEM disabled so you’re being entitled to say you are.” Instead of idk...just talking to you about your circumstances like a real person to become educated. I get the, “you don’t look sick” all the time and it irritates the crap out of me because that’s not a thing. It’s pretty basic common sense that when I’m doing well people SEE me. When I’m not they don’t because I’m stuck at home so sick and in pain I don’t leave my bed. Pretty simple. But because they don’t live my life, don’t deal with my circumstances, and only care about what they can see, they never think they might not know the whole story. Well it’s not MY job to educate them, and not my job to make them feel better about MY life or illness. I owe explanations to no one but myself. I really hope this situation doesn’t negatively affect OP’s anxiety & depression, and that their therapy helps them deal with this on a healthy way and cut these people out of their life. It’s drama, stress, and ignorance no one needs.

Agreed but I don’t think they’d make the Professor stay past the class time. That wouldn’t work if the Professor has another class or a weekly appointment or meeting that started within the student’s accommodated test-taking time. At my school, people who take advantage of their extra test-taking time have to schedule the test through the Disability Services Office and then take the test there instead of with the rest of the class.

Story one: I don't think OP is the idiot (NTA). I have anxiety with mild depression due to my Asperger's Syndrome and/or autism spectrum. So I would need therapy back then to better function into the world as I get older. Don't feel bad for doing this program. What's going to happen then?
@HH-ru4bj

I think it goes to more than that. It sounds like the friend is jealous because they are stressing out over their uni experience, while op is able to get assistance they can't. The idea they put forward as op taking away from someone more deserving, is simply wrong. Even if op wasn't all that bad off, they're not being given something of limited resources like a reserved slot in a program or a handicap parking spot. They are given more time for assignments and are allowed to record lectures. They aren't taking something material, they qualify for additional accomodations. I dont see the problem either as from what horror stories I've heard of college and the trials of being in the workforce for 20 years, if you don't take every opportunity you can, then you're stupid. I won't say op is lucky as I'm sure they'd rather not have severe anxiety and clinical depression, but they have nothing to feel sorry for.

They're not family; they're terrible people and OP's already been generous. 3. Mike's responsibility wasn't the dog; that was OP's and she botched it. Sure, it was his joint, but he didn't lead the pup into the room. Side note: I've heard activated charcoal can deactivated medications, so I think it combats chemicals foreign to the host body. 4. The there were some key words in OP's post. "Panic attacks are less frequent" that means they still happen, meaning there is still clearly a mental health issue. Just because it's a condition that is actively been treated doesn't remove it, you don't cure mental health, you manage it. Managed mental health is still mental health. I have diabetes, I take medication for it, its managed, but I am, and always will be, a diabetic. Mental health is the same, managed doesn't mean cured.

@@TS-oz3ec I did the same thing. I was most of the way through my AA before I found out the program could help me. I though 'well, I am not mentally/physically handicapped, so I guess I just have to struggle on my own.' Fortunately, my school made a point to push disability awareness and what disabilities actually are and who qualifies for the program. Awareness is important for everyone, my perspective of what is a disability was wrong and it hindered me and left me ignorant to other people's problems as well. When I went to Uni for my BA I already knew I qualified for their program and was able to apply for it right away. I am currently taking my last class to graduate and I know I could not have made it this far without the accommodations I received.

That university accomodations one is nuts. If a disability accomodation is working, then that is what is SUPPOSED to happen! You don't remove it. The person doesn't have to been in active distress to prove that they need the accomodation -- that is actually more like that the accomdation being provided isn't enough or is the wrong one. Imagine this being done with another disability. For example, I am short sighted, so I wear glasses. I don't say, "Yay! I can see now. Time to take the glasses off and get behind the wheel of a car!" And, if after putting on the glasses, things are fuzzy and I am bumping into things, then I have the wrong prescription and it needs adjusting. That's just the way accomodations work.

Hey mark this is how the Charcoal works. “Activated charcoal” is basically a purifier for when the human body or animal has a large amount of toxin like drugs in the system. When people are on the verge of an overdose then activated charcoal will be pumped into the body to stabilise the toxins inside the body. It’s a more pleasant way to detox the body than pumping the stomach but sometimes there’s way to much drugs in the system that they’ll need to do both options.
@hotjanuary

It only works if the toxin has been ingested recently. Once the toxin has been absorbed into the blood stream through the digestive tract, the charcoal is useless. Basically, it only works while the toxin is in your digestive tract.

Charcoal is not used to induce vomiting. Activated charcoal binds to the toxins in the stomach, meaning that any leftover toxins in the dog’s stomach after vomiting should be “trapped” in the charcoal. This means that there should be minimal toxin absorption by the body after charcoal ingestion.

Story 1. NTA. I was diagnosed with clinical depression and PTSD in my early 20’s. I’m now in my 50’s. Where did time go? The OP in this story does not have to justify anything to anyone. Mark is right when he said “Find new friends.” That type of toxic “friendship” can toss you into a frightening rabbit hole drowning you in the “I’m no good” places. Getting out of that is almost impossible. The reason schools offer these programs is so that you can function throughout the day. I will give you a private example. When I go grocery shopping, getting my items, putting my card in my wallet, putting wallet in purse is enough to throw me in a full fledge panic attack. Once it got so bad that the manager got me a chair, water and shut down the lane until I could continue. He then took my groceries and loaded them in the car for me. Just because you are doing well now, does not mean that you don’t have serious struggles. Ignore your “friends” as real friends would sympathize and be happy that there are programs in place to aid you. Good luck OP.

First Story: NTA Who do these so-called friends think they are? They clearly are not mental health experts. "You're 'stable', you don't need this program.' Really? And they know this how? People really burn me up. If the school didn't think OP belonged in this program, they wouldn't have been let in. Period. Anxiety alone can be very crippling. So can depression. Combine the two? Not a good combo. I think I would show this person this Reddit thread too. Maybe give her another perspective. Grr... This one really burned me up! Second Story: NTA Things are going to end up getting very ugly before they are over. I just have a feeling. That stepmom is going to start nonsense after dad passes. Third Story: YTA It's definitely not the roommates fault what happened to your dog. The door was locked for crying out loud! You know the dog follows you, so are responsible. Charcoal, or ipecac, works on animals and people to make you vomit when you have ingested something. Don't use it on just anything though, that can also be harmful. And how big was that joint? And what quality of weed was it? That could have been an expensive joint. You might have to repay it. Fourth Story: YTA Why bother to ask, you KNOW you are!! Yikes...

Dog story, I have a Maltese mix and one day she was shaking, swaying, looked spaced out and I was worried she ate a plum pit as we had plum trees and she liked eating the fruit. My brother and I took her to the emergency vet, also a weekend. They told me she was stoned. She must have eaten some that fell as my brother was breaking it up. We opted out of the expensive treatment and let her ride it out. As a dog owner YOU are responsible for your dog, roommates door was locked and it was HIS private space. My dog has not eaten any weed since.

First story: It’s amazing the amount of people who don’t accept that not all disabilities are those that can be seen. Guess what? Some are psychological and felt internally and therefore can still affect a person’s ability to function effectively. OP’s so-called ‘friends’ need to mind their own business.

Stoned Dog story - The OP is the AH totally. Mike is justified to say no to her demand for him paying part of the bill. He gave permission for HER to enter his room while he was away, not HER dog. She is 100% responsible. I have experienced this. When I was at Uni my dog (that was in my home I owned) got into a flatmate's room and chewed up his AD&D Players Handbook AND a brilliant map he had painted on a pigskin parchment. I could reimburse the players handbook - which was a lot of money for a student in 1981 but could not reimburse the effort he put into the map. I gave him some free rent in exchange and nearly forty years later I still feel shite about it.

The first one infuriates me, and I’m not even finished with it yet. I am an honors student with a perfect GPA, but my severe ADHD and autism cause me to struggle. So my college gives me accommodations. There isn’t a fucking limit on them. People who get accommodations NEED them. We need them because while we might excel or do just fine in school, the way it is structured isn’t exactly fair for us. For example, I need written copies of any and all instructions, as well as subtitles on all videos and such, otherwise I’d be a disorganized mess who wouldn’t process anything I hear. Her friends sound like ableists who doubt the legitimacy of her disorder, and are jealous bc they don’t get what they view as “special privileges.” They aren’t cheating bonuses, they are basic accommodations that help make things fair for us.

Story one is so horrible, as someone in college who has Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Clinical Depression as well as Dyslexia I know what a difference those accommodations can make. I would not have been able to make it through a lot of my classes without the time extension for exams. But with that extra time I was able to show that I did understand the material and pass my classes. It is hard enough having an 'invisible disability', sometimes you have some good days and they make you think 'maybe I am faking it, maybe I am just lazy?' and you doubt yourself. Then those bad days hit and you remember how real your problem is. You don't need other people invalidating you too.

I work in disability services at a college, and that person has nothing to fee guilty about. They got those services because they need them, and the ADA would have serious problems with the school having a cap on how many students they help. Additionally none of the accommodations they described are limited resources depending on how the school handles them. At most the student might need to take their tests at a weird time because of the extended time and the school might need to buy a recorder if the student isn’t using a smart phone and the school runs out of the recorders they have.

"It could go to people who really need it" is such a slippery slope. They set the guidlines for who they accept and the OP fit the criteria. People have to stop gatekeeping mental illness and what is and isnt allowed to recieve help.

Story 1: I wish people would realize that using resources provided to you for the sake of your health isn’t “being selfish”. It’s like if someone’s leg is broken but their friend tells them not to go to the hospital because someone could be bleeding out and needs the hospital bed more. NTA Story 4: At first it didn’t seem so bad, but as it went on it got worse. No comfort for his wife, no “fuck what others think about us”. All he did was validate her insecurities. “Boo hoo, my wife has a disease and is insecure, but what really matters is how other people see ME.”

Story 1 NTA I was made to feel like this in uni due to a physical illness. I had to get an extension on a piece of work one time and a girl in my class got pissy saying she was tired and didn't get "special treatment" I shouldn't take advantage. Thing is I had doctors notes and used the same channels as she could to get the extension. She got pissy again when I needed my own room on a residential trip due to my illness one of the teacher accidently let slip that a government program paid for the extra. She turned others against me. Thankful I had one friend left that understood. I would much rather be able to hand my work in on time and staying on your own in a hotel room is not as fun as it sounds.

Story 1: NTA, it took a lot for me to come to terms with using my accommodations. I failed classes and was almost kicked out because I was so scared that it would be seen as abusing the system. I use them now and I made President's Honor Roll, got inducted into a honor society, and am on track to graduate with special honors. Please don't see that as a brag, but I use my own story to motivate those like me. Don't fail yourself to make others happy. You got those accommodation because they thought you'd need them. I had this co-worker who was very open to the fact that she sees a psychiatrist and takes a lot of meds for a mental condition. This co-worker was wonderful and always seemed down to earth. Her and I put together at work were the dream team. But like. . .she absolutely IS mentally ill. Just because she does well when on her meds and at work, does not mean she doesn't struggle, or that she has fully recovered from her condition. She mentioned once how a mix up with her insurance would only pay for one of her medications that month and she couldn't afford to get the other and she was a wreck. OP's friends are assholes. They aren't medical professionals, nor are they HER personal doctor. This program was created to help OP and her mental health, and it clearly is helping. They want her to cut herself off from the help she's getting because what. . .they're jealous?

Activated charcoal binds to compounds so when given to the dog it binds to the toxins it has ingested and prevents it from being absorbed into the system.

Story 1: NTA Those people are not good friends, op. Specially because OP is still on medication, while it's essential for recovery and definitely better then not treating the depression, that stuff still make your brain foggy and slow, bad anxiety makes you freeze and panic and freak out during the exams, that extra time is needed. I was in a special needs group in middle school. I got an extra class to help with my spelling and help during exams where someone would read the question out loud for me and explain what they were looking for in an answer because I wasn’t giving complete answers and didn’t understand what they wanted. My marks drastically improved. My friends and I started competing on the spelling sheets who could get them right and who could get them done first. We got so far ahead of the rest of the class that the teacher didn’t have those worksheets printed out yet. And with a teacher going, okay, now explain your answer I started getting full marks because I wasn’t understanding that the question was implying I needed to support my answer and not just list everything out. People shouldn’t be made to feel bad about needing extra help. First OP’s so called friends are just jerks. The kind of people that make everything worse for someone
