Three years back, on the night of 15 June, 2020, the process of withdrawal of Chinese troops from Indian side of the LAC p in the Galwan Valley, turned violent. The Chinese, well prepared for the encounter, surprisingly attacked the Indian troops of 16 BIHAR, led by their Commanding Officer, Col Santosh Babu in a bizarre hand to hand combat, in which the Chinese troops used maces, rods with barbed wire strung at the end, spikes to kill 20 Indian soldiers including Col Babu. Reportedly, the Chinese lost over 40 dead.
The Chinese decided to withdraw only when our troops won the race to occupy the Kailash Range, and entrenched themselves in a tactically advantageous position by overlooking the Moldo Valley, and some parts of the Fingers along Pangong Tso.
The lessons of Galwan have been deep, leading to a change in role, tasks and deployment of Indian units and formations all along the Line of Actual Control in Tibet. It has spurred the growth of infrastructure, logistics at a rapid pace, making the whole LAC far more defendable while creating options for counter-strikes in all sectors.
