The 'Back to the Future' camcorder (JVC GR-C1) was launched in 1984, and it used a camera tube, rather than a CCD. The bright light 'trails' recorded on camcorder videos of that era were due to the use of tubes, rather than solid state sensors. The fist CCD camcorders appeared in 1985.

Very well said. I remember a lot of the changes too, having grown up and living with them. I used to record tv on vhs tapes in the mid 90’s. Then I was burning CD’s and DVD’s. My first mobile phone was the bosh 509e. It was literally a massive ORANGE brick. Tiny black and white display with huge telephone keys! It’s madness having lived through all the changes over the last 20 years. Today we are so spoiled. In a good way. Technology moves very quick sometimes. Great video.

I really enjoyed this new series. I remember in 1981 going to Radio Rentals, and renting out a huge separate Sharp VHS portable video recorder with a big separate video camera, with my friend for filming the tall ship event, at Southampton Docks. What an enjoyable experience it was. Please bring out your next episode as soon as you can. Thank you.

I lived through the two piece camera and recorder. It was always mind blowing as each new advancement was made. When I switched from two piece beta to one piece vhs I purposely went with a full size vhs cartridge because the drum was full size and the quality was therefore better. Back then editing was done tape to tape and quality was essential. Then 8mm tape came along and the small size and high quality blew me away. I now use a digital Sony Handicam but convenience and quality is just about a toss-up between it and my iPhone. The powerful zoom on the camcorder gives it the edge imo. killer idea for a series. i love how you keep our exponential advancement in mobile tech in perspective to things as little as 5 years ago and beyond. most people don't reflect on the things you make videos about. kudos.

It was very interesting to see the comparison of then and now. My family actually owned the RCA VHS shoulder video camera shown early in the episode, and it was a bit nostalgic to remember how privileged I thought our family was. Now everyone and their dog has something better... In there pocket no less. I always watch your videos, because they are usually quite informative, without all the needless talking. I really liked this! Especially since there are times when I do look at my phone and think back to the days when it would have been several bulky devices that I would have never ben able to take out with me. It's also nice to look back every once in a while, looking forward to more of these!

Loved it man, kept my interest the whole way through, i had a home video camcorder once and it's like when you go back to and old game that you think looked as good as any of today's games and it looks nothing like them, seeing the comparison of today and then's camera's blew me away

Awesome mate! We actually use to own one of those split system cameras, but it was actually split into 3 pieces: one being the camera itself, the other being the tape recorder unit and the third being a belt strap with a bunch of batteries. We then upgraded to a JVC VHS all-in-one camcorder which was "studio quality", it weighed in at around 2.5kg.

regarding the statement at 5:32. Nokia n95 had superd video quality and came out on 2007. There where decent smartphones long before the touchscreen market emerged...
