Froslass-line Solo Challenge - Pokemon Platinum

You going back to the Move Reminder with Froslass gave me a good idea for a possible solution to Byron, and I'm hitting myself for not thinking it! The answer? Wake-Up Slap! 4x Damage on the Bastiodon, and a better hit on the Magneton. Also another reminder: Saturn is male, not female :P

It does. I usually teach it to her on a play through in gen 4. A lot of Pokemon are doubleweak to fighting, and have low defense. It does a lot more damage than one would assume.

In generation 8, evolved pokémon can also be reminded of their pre-evolution’s moves if they couldn’t themselves learn them by level-up. It looks like this is also possible in Scarlet and Violet, but there might have been some oversights that got fixed in updates (I’m looking at you, Breloom). In generations 3 to 5, pokémon can only be reminded of moves within their own level-up set. In generations 6 and up, there are additional categories of moves that pokémon can remember: Moves they hatched with (relevant for egg moves), event-specific moves, and moves known due to being encountered in some special encounter types (hidden pokémon, island scan, grand underground). In SwSh and SV, pokémon can also remember moves which they learned from a consumable item (TR in SwSh, TM in SV).

I think return with the silk scarf would've done much better against Flint. His pokemon have a lot less physical defense than special defense and you probably would've one-shot the Houndoom and the Flareon. I'm not sure if you can get multiple return TMs in Platinum but if you can, that would definitely be the better option.

I think part of the problem is that this thing has a lot of options, and needs to switch things up strategically rather than simply relying on the same strategies. so if you get stubborn with it and try to ram square pegs into round holes, you have a bad time. also it dies to strong Fire and Steel attacks. but the fact that it's a mixed attacker with access to Ice, Dark, Ghost, Water, Electric, Psychic, and Fighting moves as well as Return means it doesn't ever really need to beat its head against a wall. idk there's just some Pokemon where the Scott playstyle is really, really bad for their first attempt.

I think you could have gotten further against Flint at 33:52 by using substitute against the Flareon, since overheat lowers its special attack by 2 stages. That said, if shadow ball didn't have the ohko range against Rapidash, then you're probably also missing the range against Infernape and Magmortar, so... yeah, I guess that wouldn't work. The rain dance/water pulse strat was probably the way to go in the end.

Froslass might be a sign of things to come that the Ice and Ghost types struggle in Platinum. A lot of opposing Pokemon are Dark-type or have Dark moves to oppose Ghosts, and the Ice-type seems to run into walls against Fire.

add in that the only thing ice resists is ice… defensively ice is really bad, and it doesn’t have a good matchup against many of the major fights in Sinnoh. The ice type is weak to steel (Byron), fire (Flint, e4), fighting (Maylene), and rock (Roark). It’s super effective into grass, flying, ground, and dragon, of which only grass (Gardenia) and ground (Bertha, e4) are used by major opponents. Champion Cynthia does have several pokemon weak to ice (Garchomp 4x, Togekiss and Roserade 2x), but she also has her Lucario, which can hit for super effective damage against ice with either of its STABs. Meanwhile, ice STAB is resisted by steel (Byron), water (Crasher Wake), fire (Flint, e4), and ice (Candice). Overall this means ice is weak to many major opponents and also struggles to get good damage using their stab moves against many of them too. I suspect this would be especially harsh in the early game with Roark, potentially against Maylene as well. If the mon gets good coverage, it should become easier, but if it doesn’t, Byron would probably cause problems. thank you for coming to my ted talk, I’m going to have to rewatch the video bc I got distracted yammering on in the comments 😅

When I was young my brother gave me his game boy color with gold and it was the first video game I played. I don’t remember why but I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the snorunt line. I love snorunt and glailie, and then when they made froslass, I loved it as well. Not sure what experience I had with this line but it’s so nostalgic and will always be one of my favorite Pokémon evolution lines 💚

At around 14:30 the base stat total for froslass is off by 6 it should be 480.

Definitely need to replay this mon. Although it's tricky to play, the amount of resets to stubbornness and removing ice fang were the faults and it definitely can get a time in the 2:40-2:50 range at the very least.

It really does seem that Snorunt ->Froslass as a solo Pokemon benefits from switching its moveset when the time is right and also takes good advantage of its Ice STAB.

This was fun, and this is another one of those runs that makes me really excited to see the optimization process. I think Froslass has a significantly better time it can get here. Also, Roserade is super good! It's a remarkably strong Pokemon and I feel like you should do a playthrough to apologize to it for all the times you've made fun of it. :p

Hey scott, just something that may help u with acquiring more pokedollar for your future platinum runs if needed. In these games, there are 2 ways to get the doubling money items, the amulet coin or the luck essence. Amulet coin - Amity square. Behind the bench, all the way north from the east entrance. If you are getting psyduck as a HM mule, it should be easy and faster for you to obtain as soon as u reach hearthome city. Luck Essence - Ravaged Path. In the north end of the cave (requires Surf and Rock Smash). This is more out of the way and requires more HMs, which makes getting the amulet coin the more optimal choice. Hopefully, with knowledge of these, it makes getting some of those notorious game corner TMs a bit easier and offers a faster alternative for you to obtain them if u need them to further optimize the play

the problem with the Amulet coin is that only "cute Pokemon" will be able to get it, due to the limitations for entering Amity square. It can be a way to give them an advantage for future playthroughs, though. The Luck essence, on the other hand, could be a possible option for mon struggling near the endgame and need a Game Corner TM to proceed. *edit* OOOOH, he can use the HM user to gain access to amity square! Ignore my second paragraph. 😅

Many have mentioned wake up slap for Byron, but also, metal burst works like counter and mirror coat, meaning it only does damage if you damage it, so it’s a largely free sub for you to avoid getting hit by a stone edge while you chip away at it. Additionally, as someone whose watched this and drapion in consecutive watches, i think empoleon is actually the tougher rival for both as it has resists both of froslass’ stabs and resists the dark type of drapion and is immune to its poison type while also giving you a tougher match up with the ponyta line over the buisel line.

A bunch of people already pointed out Wake-Up Slap for Byron, but just as a note: at 23:28 you say that the Bastiodon is scarier if you have your special defense lowered by Magneton's Metal Burst, but Bastiodon has no special moves. Its only ways of dealing damage are Stone Edge, which is physical, and Metal Burst, which is based on the damage it's taken. Byron really, really sucks.

I also would've never guessed Froslass is a mixed attacker! Seems like it should have at least 100 Special Attack. This one will really benefit from Hidden Power if you allow it when you get around to doing 2nd playthroughs. One small thing I noticed is that the Shell Bell could've really helped with the double battle against Jupiter and Mars at Spear Pillar since you had the Spooky Plate, but weren't using Shadow Ball much.

Honestly, after weather effects and double-battle exclusive moves were introduced, I feel like double battles should have just become the norm. Pomemon Colosseum makes a really good case for this. This is relevant because I feel like it helps solve the problem with weather effects you brought up at 25:54. I've never used weather effects because it just leaves my Pokemon too vulnerable. But with two moves to work with, that might not be the case.

Hey Scott. I noticed two minor mistakes in the video: You kept bringing up the fact that your special defense was lowered against Byron's Bastiodon like it matters, but it doesn't. His Bastiodon has no special moves. Metal Burst is a Counter-like move. It does exactly the same damage like Counter or Mirror Coat, but it counters both physical and special moves. Its downside is that it does not have decreased priority. The second thing is a tiny inconsequential detail that I noticed in several of your last Platinum videos and it has been bothering me for some time, but I thought someone else would correct you by now: Commander Saturn is a man. You keep referring to him as a "she" for so long right now, I just had to say something. Mars and Jupiter are women, Saturn is a man. Otherwise, great video as always, I always enjoy your work!

Froslass is my Fav ice type Pokémon such a great design and change for a Gen 3 Pokémon, the backstories they give it spooky but also always annoyed me it’s a mix attacker but still good that it is, it and glalie have weird stats, though what’s very enjoyable about Gen 4 games is that you get Return at the start of the game but 90% of the Pokémon we have done so far haven’t used it, only a couple I can recollect currently have

Totally agree! Heck, any kind of specialization would've been preferable to what Glalie got. An average BST spread perfectly evenly just means it isn't really good at anything. Froslass is at least fast but still suffers from mediocre attack stats. Personally, I'd have distributed their stats like this instead: Glalie HP:80/Atk:100/Def:90/Sp.Atk:60/Sp.Def:70/Spe:80 Froslass HP:70/Atk:60/Def:60/Sp.Atk:100/Sp.Def:80/Spe:110

Wow, Froslass did much worse than I expected. Like, I was really expecting it to do better, it's one of my favorite ice types. Also, hard agree on Froslass looking more like a special attacker. It catches me so off-guard, everytime I'm reminded it actually has equal attack and sp. Attack. Also, kinda off-topic, but am I the only one who gets annoyed when he says the E4 in this game are pushovers? The Sinnoh E4 is one of the most challenging in my opinion, they all have genuine good pokemon and coverage for gen 4 standards. They aren't even bad, he's just extremely overleveled in a solo run, not to mention this game has lots of rare candies you can pick up. That's the only thing putting him at an advantage, and he still struggles beating them sometimes. I don't want to sound mean, but I can't help but roll my eyes every time he says they're pushovers, while he's like, 20 levels higher than the E4, with rare candies still available in his bag, and still losing to them.

For the Distortion World--while it may be a bit tedious, since you have the playback files for all your previous runs, one option could be to simply go back, time how long the Distortion World segment takes for each, reduce the final times by that amount, and modify future runs to skip directly to Cyrus. Since it's completely identical for every single Pokemon, it shouldn't impact rankings at all, and you'd save yourself the trouble in the future. Though of course it's understandable if you want to keep it in for integrity!

not that replays are happening anytime soon, but i think wake-up slap would be good for the byron and candice split. Lvl 52 52 Atk Froslass Wake-Up Slap vs. Lvl 41 0 HP / 0 Def Bastiodon: 68-80 (60.7 - 71.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (adjusted for the 111 atk froslass had at the time). candice and cyrus also take decent damage from wake-up slap, though i dont know which move you would replace.

The solution to Flint was right in front of you: should've used Substitute in front of Flareon to get it to -2 special attack and to stall out another turn of sun. Honestly double substitutes would've been ideal.

for weather strats id reccomend using the underground to get the weather rocks to extend their duration. i know you dont want "infinite money" but nothing says you have to keep and sell everything, can just drop all items that arent actually gunna be used

I have mined for weather rocks in gen 4 before. It WILL NOT save time. The usual time (for me) to find any of the weather rocks is around 20-25 minutes and to find the one you need is complete luck.

You could use Substitute to bait out Overheat as it halves the users S Atk after they use it and eventually it will be survivable.

18:26 Yeah, I'm not sure why you didn't get rid of Crush, instead. Dark moves hit super effective against psychic and ghost types. Just like ghost moves. 33:48 I would have used substitute. That "harsly lowers the sp atk" was going to hurt flareon more than losing a fourth of your hp and your substitute to you. Maybe it wouldn't work, but I would have tried, at least.

Gen 4 is my favorite. It's what reignited the spark of Pokémon for me as I became a young adult. I do love gen 1 still, but gen 4 felt like the peak in design around dedicated players. Everything just got so much easier in later gens.

18:45 - look at all those flying types on his team with low defence stats would be a good idea to maybe use a STAB ice-type move that attacks physically? and rather than RareCandy, why not train on Iron Island pre-Byron, it's a neat little fetch-quest with the added bonus of testing out some ranges for the likes of Steelix (which can be found wild), and the levels are not-awful at mid-30s

I feel the problem with this Pokemon is being tricked by ilFroslass’s design into thinking it’s a special attacker, a sweeper. It’s offenses are so bad. Like, Skarmory’s or Graveler’s Attack levels of mediocrity. frosslass is a bad Pokemon for anything but setting Spikes and Destiny Bonding

You should time how long it takes you to clear the distortion world, then use the universal randomizer option to skip straight to Cyrus, then just add that amount of time distortion world takes to the end result of the run.

I think part of the issue with weather is that it’s really hard to count the turns when playing on 4x speed. That and hail is kind of a weak weather until Gen 9, and really even then. Separately, I think you’re also consistently forgetting that froslass is a mixed attacker until pretty late in the run because it feels like it should be a special attacker.
