That is what I am thinking. I have a plug kit in my model 3 and my other car just in case. Especially since he had a air compressor with him. And he was getting new tires right away so no real problem with plugging it even though tire plugs have gotten a bad rap. I've never had a problem with one and I've used them for 30 yrs now.

I have used them at least a dozen times and never had a problem. You need a pair of pliers to remove the nail and then use the reamer and insert plug and pump up the tire. FYI, buy a kit with a good "T" handle for leverage. It's a lot easier to get at the puncture when you can turn it out on the front tire. On the back you are going to have to lie down and get dirty :-), unless you remove the wheel first.

Facts! My model 3 performance is riding around on a plugged tire. And it will be until the tires need to be replaced. (Plug occurred around 5k miles). Discount threatened to keep my car hostage if it was deemed “not patchable” until they could get my tire in. This threat was enough for me to go and plug it. I’ve driven absurd speeds and miles on plugged tires. It’s a non-issue unless you have a separation in the plys.

The lack of a spare is not specifically an EV thing. There are some gasmobiles that don't have a spare. Your situation really wasn't that bad. You had an air compressor and only needed to use it a couple times. This tire could have been patched with one of those reamer and plug things, and would have been good to go a long way.

I have a Performance Model 3 and got a pinch flat when I hit a fairly hidden road hazard in a construction zone on a Sunday afternoon. The tire instantly lost all pressure and was unusable. I was able to pull over in a safe spot just after the construction zone. I figured, this is no problem, because Tesla Roadside Assistance is my "virtual spare". Well I was wrong. After searching the area for over half an hour, they were unable to locate a spare for my car. It appears that they don't typically have spares my car - it has the 20" performance wheels and the smaller wheels will not fit over the larger brakes. Fortunately I was only 10 miles from my house and 40 miles from the Tesla dealer. They towed my car to the dealer for free and dropped me off at home on the way. The dealer finally replaced the tire by Tuesday afternoon. I continue to think that this same scenario would been a disaster if I was a long way from home and possibly a long way from a Tesla dealer or tire center. Because of that, I purchased one of those spare tire kits and throw it in the car, standing up behind the drivers seat anytime I travel out of the area - I hate it, but it is better than the alternative. I also carry a plug kit and an electric pump.

If a plug kit isn’t readily available, an alternative is a screw with glue (ideally rubber cement or similarly flexible). That has worked for me as a temporary solution until I can get home and install a proper plug. I’ve even used a screw that caused a leak to begin with! LOL

Justin Fowler New fix a flat is safe for tpms, they say. Key is to tell the people who work on the tire and not leave it too long as the hunk needs to be washed off. I have a plug kit, a can of fix a flat, a bottle of slime and a compressor where the spare would be. Suggest that every Tesla owner should be able to repair a flat on his/her own. While roadside service is fine, it won't do you much good in the middle of Nevada on highway 50 or any of the N/S highways out there. Also, there's the matter of cost. Tesla is most likely going to require you to buy a new tire, when in many cases a plug/patch/Slime repair is just fine. And you're the frugal dude!

Just bought Modern spare. No clearance* for jack with a totally blown out totally deflated flat tire (worst case scenario.) BUT you can carry wood and drive flat tire up onto an approx 2" high platform you can make with a stack of 1 foot by 1 foot 1" thick plywood squares for jacking clearance. Carry 1 extra 1/2" thick piece for under the jack (for soft or uneven ground) * Normal Model 3 ground clearance is approx. 5 1/2" with good tire, and approx. 2 1/2" with totally blown out and deflated un-inflatable tire. Modern Spare jack is over 3" tall fully collapsed. You will need to drive it onto wood to elevate car in order to use their jack.

For what it’s worth, I’ve got 2 cars with no spare (Volt and Fiat 500e). I got “spare kids” for both and generally leave them in my garage. I figure, for me, 95% of the time I’m in town … no more than 10 miles from home. If either car gets a flat, me (or my spouse) can easily bring the tire/jack to the person with a flat in less than 30 minutes. I prefer to deal with it myself rather than wait for help or pay for towing (I’m frugal too). The only time I bring it with me is when I take the occasional long distance trip (about 200 miles) in the Volt. I’ve seen countless people on side of road with flats when driving from Orlando to Gainesville, for example. I don’t mind carrying that extra weight for those infrequent long trips for peace of mind and safety. I also carry a plug kit (with pliers), just in case. As usual, thanks for sharing your experience and ideas!

I've had multiple flats in my Tesla within the last 6 months. Not sure why this car is a nail magnet, but it is. So I've become a bit of an expert on the subject matter...reluctantly. The first flat I had was handled by Tesla Roadside Assistance. They brought a spare to my office parking lot and changed it out for me there. I had to drive to the Tesla service center to pick up my new tire since it was damaged beyond repair. The last few flats I've fixed in my garage with a tire plug kit. Once with the tire still on the car, and once by removing the wheel from the car. Removing the wheel makes it easier to plug, but if I were stranded on the road with no jack...it can be done with the wheel still on the car. Lastly, I own that ModernSpare tire kit that you show at the end (there's a review video on my channel). It comes with a jack and everything you need to swap out a wheel on the side of the road. The tire on the wheel is a reinforced Perelli spare that will last many many years. It is a bit pricey up front, but trust me it is worth it in the long run. High-quality stuff. It's a full size spare, so it won't fit in the frunk or sub-trunk area, but because it is narrow, it lays flat enough in the trunk to leave room on top of it for other bags. Maybe a can of fix-a-flat or slime would be another option to try in a situation like yours. Just something to slow down the leak until you get home safely.

First, move the tire so the puncture is in the bottom. Then start filling your tire with the slim compressor. Over inflat it to like 40-50psi. It’s normal if it hisses. Just start driving and the slim will start filling the hole. If that does not work, KZbin how to plug a tire. Not that hard at all. Btw, hockey puck is not a good material to use as a jack shim. Use a piece of 2x4 or something.

BMW’s use run flats. I hit a giant pothole at night in my X3 about 70 miles from home. Both passenger side tires were flattened and both rims bent. Made it home safely on the run flats. With two ruined tires/wheels, a spare would not have helped me.

The aftermarket spare kit sold online is a safety hazard in a collision since it can’t be bolted down under the cargo floor like a spare tire designed for the car. It also takes up too much usable cargo space since it doesn’t fit under the cargo floor. Since fix-a-flat spray in a can isn’t compatible with the foam lined factory tires, tire repair plug kits are the best available option. You won’t be able to get Tesla roadside assistance to come out and change the tire for you if you drive more than 50 miles away from the nearest Tesla service center.

My last car to have a spare was a 2007 Yaris. Haven't had a spare since 2010. It's not a big deal. Just carry a patch/plug kit with a small 12v inflator. If the damage is too severe, get a tow. It's like pennies a month for roadside through most insurance companies. Owning a Tesla doesn't make the process any different than the rest of us without spare tires. Notice how I intentionally don't mention what I drive that doesn't have a spare because tires don't care what vehicle they're on when they go flat.

This is helpful. With less than 7,000 miles on my brand new Tesla Model Y I took my car to have my tires rotated. To my alarm, the inside tread on the front tires were bald and would not pass the state inspection. It was clear that Tesla delivered the car without aligning the tires. I notified Tesla in Peabody believing that this was clearly a warranty issue. His reply: Good Afternoon John, This is Blake from Tesla Service in Peabody. Unfortunately, both alignments and tires are not covered under your vehicle warranty as they are a wear and tear item. There are many factors which contribute to a vehicle's alignment which could have led to the kind of wear in the photos. We can keep the appointment for the 3rd at this time so that we can order 4 new tires if you wish. We can send you the estimate for them and the alignment through the app or I can attach it to this email if you prefer. I bought the Modern Spare kit for my LR RWD Model 3 prior to a 2200 mile road trip this past summer. Our route took us through long stretches of desert, where even if cell service was good, dispatch time for a tow truck would likely have been a prolonged affair. I still carry the spare in the trunk, and have not suffered any appreciable decline in range. My last car was a hybrid, which one evening suffered a catastrophic tire failure when a curb I could not see in the dark met up with the tire. Fortunately I was not far from home, and, as you, limped home at cautious speeds. The next day I went to the dealer and purchased a spare tire kit, and swore I would not be without such on any future car I own. I also purchased an air compressor, which fortunately I haven't had to use to keep a leaking tire inflated, but rather to maintain recommended tire pressures. That has likely contributed to my tire wear being pretty normal for 23,000 + miles so far. Keep up the great work on your videos! I am subscribed and make a point to watch each one when you release them.

What a coincidence! I had a flat in my Model 3 on a Sunday. Thank goodness because I watch your videos I have a battery operated tire pump and was able to get to the only tire store open in town. My backup plan was to call Tesla and have them install my third party spare (which I also learned from watching your videos). Fortunately, the tire held up and Just Tires patched it for around $30 in about an hours time. Thanks for all the practical advice. Much appreciated! My plan C if the tire was not repairable was to have the store mount the spare and order new tires. I'm interested in the Goodyear Eagle Exhilerates. They are designed to prevent curb rashing the rims. It's been a week and the patch is still holding. They were aware of the sound deadening foam lining the inside.

I keep a tire plug kit and small air compressor in my Model 3 at all times; they don’t take up much room. But, for longer road trips, I bought this same spare tire and jack kit from Amazon the week I got my 3. The tire and jack kit are really well made; highly recommended. Yeah, it takes up some room in the trunk, but in the middle of nowhere a single piece of road debris can really cost you a lot of time and money. The tire isn’t really secure in the trunk, so it could move around in an accident, but usually on a road trip your luggage and other stuff packed in the trunk keeps it from moving around much.

I read a statistic somewhere that suggests 85% of all cars go to the wreckers without ever having used the spare tire. With that in mind I think it's incredibly dumb to have a spare tire weighing down your car and using up space for the entire duration of it's life. I wonder if the added weight also puts a small dent in fuel economy over the span of years. Calling roadside assistance to do the job for you sounds quite appealing.

Or I remove the wheel from the car and drive the flat tire to a performance shop to have them plug it up quickly. Costs $20 for them to remove the tires, plug it, and remount the tires. Doesn’t need a rebalance if they install the tire the way it was mounted previously. No need to go to a Tesla center or a dedicated garage.

I found this out only after a relative on the second day of owning his Tesla got a flat on the Cross Bronx Expressway. No problem, just call roadside assistance... NOT. No spare tire to be found ANYWHERE so he was force to drive very slowly on the flat to a safe place where he could leave the car, take an Uber home and be told in would take 48 hours to get a replacement tire. Totally ridiculous! If you're not going to include a spare tire there should never be a situation where a replacement can't be found within a few hours ESPECIALLY in NYC.

I had been going to try going all the way to Seattle on my little compact inflatable spare, but the pass was closed going into Oregon. Changing a tire on the side of the freeway in a snowstorm while wearing shorts is fun. A California roadside assistance truck pulled up behind me while I was inflating the spare donut, but they stayed in the warm cab since I was getting it done. That Mercedes was the last car I had which had a spare at all and with the folding sidewall it was not supposed to be driven more than 50 miles. All my trucks have had full size spares and I hope Cybertruck does as well since you can get away from places the roadside assist will go to.

You give awesome information and your true opinion. I have a challenge for you. Have you ever tested autopilot on a Round About? Will it slow down to do it or will it want to go straight? We have a few where I live in Montana. It got me thinking. Good luck and thanks! 👍

I love the opportunity to get front row next to some noisy vehicle like that with my M3P! Of course only zero to the posted speed limit. I am actually looking to purchase a spare wheel and tire for a long road trip. I wish they would make an inflatable one that could go in the lower well.

Hello FTG, Thank you taking us through the excitement of having a flat tire in this video. Today, I have an almost related question: I've read that the COLD tire pressure for a Tesla Model Y is 42 PSI. Yesterday, the temperature went up to over 100 deg F, as we drove down to Morgan Hill (about 55 miles from where I live); when we reached there, I noticed that the pressure for all 4 tires were at 47 PSI after about 1-hr drive. Is 47 PSI too high, should I lower the cold tire pressure to 38 PSI during the Summer hot days? Thanks!

is there a reason why Tesla chose not to provide you a spare? Incident #1 The 2 times i called tesla service, the third party tow truck came with a spare just so i get home/shop.. the first time i used tesla service, they gave me the spare and took my damaged tire to the nearest service center...i told them i used discount tire because i had warranty with them. But they said that the requirement to lend a spare tire, was that tesla had to take the damaged one back to the service center in order to make sure that the spare is returned. I told them i would return it. So Tesla took my tire, and i drove off to my home and waited for discount tire to open... once at 8am, i was at tesla service center waiting to open so that i can get my damaged tire and take it to discount tire.. once i arrived at discount tire, they reviewed it and determined it had to be replaced.. (i had the 20" sport S tires by Michelin).. so it took 3 days to get the tire shipped to discount tire.. once it arrived, they replaced it and i returned to tesla and returned the spare.. Tesla explained to me that they had to be more strict on the spares because people were keeping the spare tires and not returning them.. Incident #2: i did the same thing, called tesla service, they arrived within 45 mins.. they gave me the spare, but this time, they let me keep my damaged tire and i took it to discount the next morning. once i got that tire replaced, i returned to tesla and gave them the spare... much easier process.

Another good video! But whatever you do, don't buy the Tesla-branded tire inflation kit on their website. I bought it when I got my Model 3, thinking I would never actually need it. Well, I needed it last night and the unit would not even power on! Total junk. Good thing I was within sight of a Discount Tire store.

I would have bought a matching rim used online to mount one of the new tires to, and saved the best older tire&rim so there would be a spare at the house. Could be a better option to get a ride home for the tire&jack, and change your self than a future tow bill.

Hi a GUY. If you remember me, I ask you a few months ago what you think about flat anxiety about having a flat especially that I am planning a long trip from Montreal to New Orleans in next June and you answer me that Tesla mobile service will help me on that. But after viewing your video I have finally decided to by from Modern Spare a tire to have less stress on my future trip. The only problem I will have to put the spare tire behind my seat because it will not fit in the truck or frunk. To big in diameter

The Model 3 doesn’t come with the compressor. But you can buy a Tesla compressor kit as an OEM accessory. What compressor were you using and did it have the sealant gunk with it as well?

What is all of the ringing of hands about the weight of a spare, it's not that much and would affect range imperceptibly. You can leave it at home if you are not going far and take it with you on trips for great peace of mind.

Tesla guy can you put which continental tires did you installed on your car. Do you like it so far. Does it have foam inside tire? I agree Tesla should have design trunk space to fit spare tire. This would have been big help carrying spare by the owners.

Frugal dude, where you stretching tire life to a dangerous level? After all “frugal” is how u ID yourself. With or w/o a spare, tire wear should be monitored with a simple gauge. I double the minimum thread value and replace tires at that point. Works well for me as I have never had a flat in over 50 years of driving. The Tesla issue of special sizes and jacking points (battery damage concerns) deserve higher levels of attention as to wear or damage on tires. As many Tesla UTube videos have shown owners at 90 mph, then complain of early tire wear, tire safety is not a well known subject. Glad ur OK and we’re close to home. Thanks

@@christopherperry4074 I have worked at a tire repair shop and that Slime or any goop for sealing tires if not removed early from tire can rust steel rims or corrode, pit and deteriorate aluminum rims on the inside. If you use Slime, get the tire fixed correctly and make sure all Slime is washed off the inside of rim.
