Thanks for sharing your tire buying experience, and good luck with the new tires--sounds like you made a great choice for your needs, where you live and the kind of weather you typically encounter. I usually rotate right on the dot at 5,000 miles and almost always get more mileage out of the tires than is estimated -- last tires I bought (not for a Tesla as I am not yet a Tesla owner, but hopefully a Y is in my future) were rated for 50,000, and I got 70,000 out of them with no issues. Still had good tread left but at 5 years old and living in Arizona with surface of the sun type temps for 5 months every year, didn't want to risk going any farther as the heat can degrade tire integrity.

I have the same 19” and I’m at 50,234 miles, and I’m just about to hit the wear bars. I’m surprised how many miles I have gotten out of these, but given I drive it more like a Prius than my RC car, I’m pretty easy on my tires. Thanks for posting your comparisons!

I'm not a diehard Pirelli fan, but I've had good experiences with two different sets I've had in the past, but I also think you made a good choice with the Continentals. In the noise comparison, there is a slightly higher sound frequency with the new set, but that would be very hard to tell while driving. Thanks for the great video!

There is a newer tire brand Vredestein, made in Norway. I put them on my 2020 BMW 330ix and found excellent traction in light snow and ice conditions. Tire Rack rates them very high, which was my driving force in buying them. Just bought a new Tesla Model Y and will consider a set for it in the future. The OEM Continental tires are rated very poorly for snow 4.8/10 score. Worth a look.

I highly recommend Contis. A long time ago, I had a Buick and the tires still had good tread when I traded it at over 65K miles. I bought PureContacts for my last car. I didn't put that many miles on them as it turned out circumstances let us buy our Model 3 much earlier than we anticipated. When it comes time, I will be buying the same tires as you did. I currently have 19K and the tread is still looking good. As most Tesla owners, I do 'let it rip' from time to time, but mostly drive conservatively.

tread ware guarantee is also important. Original equipment tires have no tread ware guarantee and because of the weight of the car becomes a factor, most Teslas wear out quickly, especially the "S" My tires lasted 21500, bought a replacement with 45000 tread ware guaranty. If I only get 21500 miles again, I will only have to pay for half the cost.

You should try Rain-X on your windshield. No wiper wear , no mechanism wear and less nervous wipers in front of your face. I use it for 20 yrs already, great !

We run Michelin Crosscliamate in winter, they are snow rated and great in the ice slush and wet roads. Pilot Sport 4 for the summer all the way.

I also bought chains from Tesla and have only practiced in my driveway. They are the easiest chains to install and to remove that I’ve ever owned. I know that it’s much harder when you’re on the side of the road and it’s covered in snow.

You definitely made the right choice. I have the Perelli's on my son's civic and my wife's all wheel drive CX5. Not super impressed. I will definitely be replacing my continentals on my M3 with continentals :-)

I'm getting close to buying new tires and have become obsessed with Nokian WRG4 with a 60k life. I think the Pirelli P7 have a 70k life, but wear out faster on Tesla's which may lead to people getting pro-rated amount, or discount on new ones according to some forum posts. Now I have to look at the Continental too. I recently bought a set of Auto Socks for my Tesla, but I have not tried them since our recent snow melted and I didn't get stuck. I think they are an interesting alternative to chains, or cables that I have used all my life. They were developed in Norway and are very popular in Europe

LOL when you listed what you wanted in a tire I immediately thought Nokian wrg4. Your high-speed performance might suffer on the dry pavement a bit but if they make that in the size for a tesla that is what I'll be using. I'll take all-weather tires over No Season tires any day.

I have the original hankooks that came on my 2022 model 3. I just passed 20,000 mi this weekend and they are so noisy. I rotate them every 6,000 miles like Tesla says but the tire noise is ridiculous. Unfortunately I still have lots of tread left so I will be dealing with this noise for a while. I want a pair of tires that is not only quiet when they are new, but where well so they stay quiet for a long time!

T0 marked tires are specifically designed for Tesla vehicles, taking into consideration the torque from the electric motors, efficiency, range, chassis stability, and overall performance. When you go with a broad, general replacement tire line without the OE marking (T0), you won't experience the same performance levels. Sure, some areas may be improved, but you'll also sacrifice other areas that you might not be expecting (range, cornering, etc...).

As someone who drives in the worst of it, across the entirety of Minnesota and far into North Dakota, I can be pretty sure I'm correct in saying that, for 90% of people, in 90% of the cases, all season tires are fine for winter driving; if you drive NORMALLY. If you like to throw your car around, stop hard at the lights, and take off quick, THEN you might think about winter tires. The overwhelming majority of the time though, driving technique is ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE more important than the difference in grip between a winter and an all season tire. I regularly run the cheapest, or just above the cheapest tires and have been just fine on the road.

After looking on TireRack I decided that the Michelin Crossclimate would be a much better performing all season tire for my needs. Has anyone tried this funny looking tire?

I have the 19" Performance wheels also with the same 235 Continental standard equipment tires. When these wear out, I'm thinking of getting slightly wider 245 tires. Hopefully this would minimize 'curb rash' as the rubber would extend slightly proud of the steel wheel and afford some protection from curb rash. What do you think?

Nick G the Continental Purecontact LS do have rim protectors built into the tires. Checkout their website. No need to get wider tires, which will affect efficiency. Lots of other tires do have rim protectors. Maybe Tesla specific tires do not have them to save weight from adding the foam inserts.

You can't compare UTQG across different brands. Each brand has a different control tire and rates UTQG based on that tire. One brand's 500 might be the same as another's 700. Even 220utqg tires will wear at different rates and grip differently too.

37,000 miles in a Model 3 is awesome!! I only got 26,000. I just replaced my 18" Michelin MXM4's with Michelin CrossClimate+ The Crossclimate+ are all weather premium tires and have 5,000 miles less warranty, however at $169 a tire compared to $250 for the OEM tires I am just fine with the choice. BTW I went to a Michelin dealer (Discount Tire) and they were able to give me $250 off due to premature tire wear and sent my tires back to Michelin under their tire tread warranty. Discount also issued me a $70 Mastercard rebate for fitting a set of 4 Michellins during the promotional period. Yes I did get the Mastercard. So I got out the door at about $600 if I count the Mastercard rebate.

@@willaerley7140 Noise - I can't tell the difference on the highway at legal speeds. Under hard acceleration you do hear more noise, or maybe its just a different noise. Not annoying. Above 85 there is a drone type noise. Efficiency - I haven't noticed a big difference. Given they are grippier I'd imagine they are less efficient. Performance - Amazing in the wet, no wheel spin, under hard acceleration on very wet roads you do hear the tires more noticeably. In the dry they perform well. Haven't had any snow yet this year.

He couldn’t look me in the face when I questioned him about it....I knew it was out of line. I also verified we were only talking about tire, not wheel. BTW before price he started talking about how special the tires were that Tesla used and not any regular primacy mxm4 would work. Needless to say I left without ordering but thanked him for his time.

Hi, I have a 2022 Tesla model 3 which has the 18” wheels 🛞. I am wondering if the Pure Contact LS type of tire you installed on your 20” wheels would work the same on the 18” wheels? I am planning to replace all of my 4 tires and I live in San Diego, CA where weather all the year round is between 55-80 Fahrenheit with few rainy days. So, which type of tire do you recommend? So great video excellent tips! So this is a little off topic, but has anyone found it difficult to replace tires on their Tesla model 3? I’ve seen very little in the news on this, but there’s an apparent tire shortage, I just tried to get my tires replaced through a Tesla service center & they came up zero, zilch, nada, no tires, I called a number of different places & they don’t stock the tires & they said they couldn’t get them either, so what’s happening with Tesla getting tires & why isn’t there more reporting on this issue? Anyone out there having a problem getting tires, I’d be interested in hearing from you! Thank you!

Over the course of the last 40 plus years, I have had many brands but mostly Michelin Pirelli and Continental, in descending order. Most of these were luxury or high-performance vehicles. I have been pleased with all of these brands and admit to being partial to Michelin. I too have the 19 inch wheels I’m my DM 3. My own independent research confirms your opinion and recommendation, at least for me. One of the major tire on-line distributors (not sure if I am able to mention their name) has a comparison chart in which you can easily see the ratings and various categories for different tires. They seem to also point to the Continental pure contact. Unfortunately, I’ve been buying my tires at one of the warehouse club stores. Of these brands, they only have Michelin. I am not quite ready for tires and I’m hoping that either at the Michelins become better rated or the warehouse club carries other brands. Thank you for your research and opinion.

FYI, per the manual, rotation for Tesla model 3 RWD is every 6,250 miles, NOT 7,500 miles, that way you can keep your wear more even and you do not end up replacing them much sooner due to 1 pair of tires at the end of life while the other pair has plenty of life. That would have given you another 6,000 plus miles out of the old set, or about 45k miles on those you replaced.

@@sasha_kahlo very different experience from different cars. I have a model 3 long range rear wheel drive. I have 22,000 Miles on the odometer. My tires are about 10-15% left life according to the tire shop that charges me $30 for rotation. The official Tesla service charges only $35 but it's further away. The shop tells me that I have done well with the rotation because the tires have worned down evenly, they also told me that the original Michelins that come with the model 3 never go beyond 30,000 around here.

Yeah I only got 24k out of my 18” oems. At 18k I tried to get costco to rotate them (for the 2nd time in these tires lives) but they refused, citing that the rear tires were too bald. Hoping my next set last longer. You can bet Costco is going to be doing free rotates every 6k Miles from here on out.

Based on the UTQG rating I should get about 60,000 give or take. I had them installed at Les Schwab and they ordered them for me giving me full warranties on everything.

That was my first thought and the fact the new tires were not noticeably quieter concerns me a little. Over the years I have almost always noticed a drop in road noise when replacing a set of worn out tires. I would expect these tires to get nosier as the wear.

An all season tire doesent handle well in all kind of weather. Actually they are really bad when its cold and really bad when its hot, they perform best on a dry day in spring/fall temps.

Unless you plan on going over 149 mph the 96V should be ok. 96W has a speed rating of 168 mph. I hope this helps and good luck!

Can you comment on tire replacement/rotations at a non-Tesla shop? I am due for a tire rotation but I don't feel confident that my local tire centers around here know how to lift the car appropriately. Should they be using blocks (like those hockey puck things) to lift the car or is that not necessary. I don't want them to lift the car and cause damage underneath.

Buy a set of 4 lift pads and keep them in your car. Print out the lift instructions before you go to a tire store. Watch and supervise how they lift your car. Trust but verify along the way.

It's unfortunate that you have such limited choices for tires. 37,000 miles is not very good especially in view of the cost of the tire. I have limited experience with Pirelli tires, but had Continental OEM tires on two new vehicles and they did not last long at all. In fact a class action suit was brought against Continental Tires which in the end, gave me a check for about 50% of the value of the tires on the first car. The best I can say is Continental is heavy on the marketing, and light on the performance (tread life). Good luck. Enjoyed the video.

Dennis Steul There are many more choices in tires with both much lower prices and much longer wear if you go with the base 18” wheels. If you go with 19 and 20” tires, you will pay for it with more frequent and more expensive tire replacements. Ride quality might be noticeably worse with the thinner tires that fit those larger rims and you definitely risk more frequent tire and rim damage from road hazards.

Its been my experience with all the brand new cars I've bought for 30 years that factory tires never last much more than 30k miles. I strongly suspect that they have been "builder grade", supplied in bulk to a manufacturer at below wholesale price. I had a Mercedes, and the salesman told me that the model I had was developed and tested with Pirelli tires, but rolled out of the factory on cheaper Michelins.

Ed Horn If you look at tires for sale online, you can plainly see that tire tread life ratings are much lower on the very low profiles 19 and 20 inch tires compared to choices of tires available in 18 inch sizes for the same vehicle that have will have more side wall.

Glad you did not purchase the Pirelli P7 tires. I had them on my Porsche 911 and they are soft for performance and cornering and wear out very fast. The Continental will last much longer and still give you some performance around corners and straight a ways

Frugal Tesla Guy Plus as you mentioned in the video those tires were specifically designed for Tesla’s which to me means they should better handle/compensate for the unique characteristics of a Tesla such as increased weight when compared to an ICE car.

Here are the legal requirements in all 50 states: 42 states consider 2/32 inch the minimum legal tread depth. California and Idaho consider 1/32 the minimum, and Arkansas, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Carolina and West Virginia have no standards on tread depth. Google is your friend. Of course it could be wrong or things could've changed over time.

Every single Continental Tire set that I've owned have been garbage. All the sets have come with cars I've purchased. They dont balance well. They don't resist punctures well and have horrible traction. Michelin's all the way.

Just so you know, bald tires are not within limits of tire tread. And it’s ridiculous to pay $200 or more per tire. Come on, that’s just insane! And from your video clearly the new tires were noisier.
