I worked at a canning facility and the cleaning of lines and preparation of kosher items is extremely serious. We loved having a Rabbi in the plant and learning from him. Thank you Sarah. This video made me recall some things I had not remembered in a while

I was surprised that even frozen vegetables need to be certified kosher. And here I thought a whole food plant based diet would be considered kosher because it doesn't include meat (no animal products at all), dairy, or eggs. I always learn something new from you in your videos. Thanks. 😊

As a non-Jew I had only a surface understanding of what being kosher entailed. I was surprised to learn of the pork gelatin, but was shocked to learn that anyone would put a kosher symbol on pork products. What. Sleazeball thing to do!

I am catholic so of course know little about Kosher (and Halal) so thank you for this. Although I do not keep any dietary restrictions I am LIVID that some companies would stoop so low as to fake the signs to dupe people into buying their products. A disgusting and greedy move.

They have also done this for allergy free foods. One product in particular that I came across was a plant based cheese advertising dairy free but you flip it over and it states on the back that it may contain traces of dairy.

@@kigeerdink6662 This is commonly done on all vegan foods. Because they cannot be sure that dairy hasn't somehow come into contact with the product, and it's sold as "Dairy Free", they have to put a disclaimer in case somehow dairy does come into contact with the food.

To lable anything with pork in it as kosher is truly shameful, as it preys on ignorance of that one specific law of kosher food. It's also kind of funny as most people who are not Jewish or Muslim know this is a strict taboo for both groups.

I can't figure out why they would even do that. I have never met a person who keeps kosher but doesn't know pork isn't kosher. So who are they trying to trick with that? Either you keep kosher, in which case you know that the pork can't be kosher, or you don't keep kosher, in which case you won't care if it's kosher or not. You know what I mean?

I might be wrong but the first thing that comes to mind are all the "fake" or "mock" products available today. Take for example vegan meatballs or the like. Someone who might not be paying attention or perhaps a recent convert might see something such as a pork product with a kosher-label and think "maybe this is a mock-product?". I can especially see how a recent convert who's still "learning the ropes" might fall prey to these types of tactics. The reality, unfortunately, is that this isn't exclusive to kosher and non-kosher products either. We are all being tricked to one extent or the other by similar tactics (even those of us without special dietary rules). Many of us have no idea what we're actually putting in our bodies, we just assume and trust (and hope?) that we're not being lied to - and these greedy corporations are more than happy to take advantage of that trust.

Loved this! I learned a lot. As a Reform Jew, I eat "Kosher Style" and I also eat mostly vegetarian with the exception of very occasional fish. I wasn't surprised by the gelatin situation. I was surprised that my non-dairy creamer would be considered dairy. I was also surprised by counterfeit kosher symbols. That is just crazy, people will do anything to make a profit.

An interesting thing about non-dairy products: many contain sodium caseinate, a milk derivative, or other things like whey, I guess to make it taste more real? It's very frustrating.

Same, my wife and I try to keep a vegetarian diet most of the time as it makes keeping kosher easier and it also helps the environment a little but we can't resist a good Salmon. We also happen to be lactose intolerant so if you are interested in vegan cheeses that tastes good and is kosher Violife is a really good one. As for milk, ice cream and other dairy stuff I recommend NotCo also kosher and super tasty.

Thanks for the great video, Sara! I am atheist but I intentionally buy a lot of kosher products because they tend to contain far fewer ingredients and the ingredients being used are cleaner and safer. The idea that a company is using fake kosher marks is horrible. If I notice that in a future shopping trip, I will be going all "Karen" with the store manager and will do my best to get that product discontinued!

I love to learn! I am Christian, Sarah, but I tend to buy Kosher as I trust its purity. My Grandfather, raised on a farm, taught me that meat should always be Kosher. I have always enjoyed Hebrew National's commercial "We answer to a higher law!" Not Jewish or Kosher, and it all seems really complicated at first, but when my daughter was small and my husband was healing from some health issues, we had a list of things we avoided - soy, artificial dyes, refined sugar, corn syrup, added weird meat products (carageean yay!), local/grassfed and more - and it became a habit to read sources/labels/etc, you get into a routine pretty quickly and it becomes double checking to make sure products/companies haven't changed. The biggest issues was the meat, because we only ate local beef that hadn't been on a feed lot and local chicken that had been raised on an actual farm. I really hope to go back to shopping this way soon, but inflation is kicking our bums. (Pork in candy is just gross, lol)

One of my areas of study is Food Science and Nutrition, yet was surprised by plant based dairy and frozen veggies being objectionable. Labeling the gelatin source is indeed a plus. Hello Sarah Thank you for yet another informative video. One can see how much effort and love you put into it! I didn't know that there were so many different kosher symbols and so many problematic products. So there's still a lot of responsibility asked from the client. As a muslim it's definitely less complicated for me (halal is kind of "kosher light" I'd say since we can mix meat and dairy) but still we need to check every product as there's often false certifications or they use certain types of alcohol in bread, cake, candy,... as preservatives which is not permissible. I live in Switzerland near a jewish neighborhood - they're very religious and take quality very seriously- and I use to buy my products there because as long as they're alcohol free I'm good to go 😊

There are a lot of people who would just see the kosher mark and assume it's okay, while you go the extra mile to make certain. Our family is Catholic and while most eat meat on Friday now, unless it's during Lent, we prefer to not eat meat on any Friday. Thank you. My having food allergies has been interesting for my extended family when we visit. We make it work and I have found that eating more Kosher is so much fun. In learning what can be mixed and what cannot. It’s been a learning curve. My Aunts have enjoyed teaching me as I have enjoyed learning. I love to learn! This was really interesting, as I’ve finally decided to begin my conversion process and am learning about kosher foods and how to recognize them, especially living in an area where the larger Jewish population and markets are a bit of a drive away. It’s sad that there are fake Kosher certifications, just people out trying to make an extra buck, but since your other video about how you inspect the veggies and cakes mixes and things like that I’ve tried to pay more attention to the symbols and I have found that many processed items I like (like my favorite popcorn snack!) are already kosher. I so look forward to your videos! It’s like connecting with a friend. I hope you have a wonderful week!

The broccoli and berry insect revelation was so good to know - and such a shock to me!! I’m almost 40 but just now learned of it - I paid more attention last time was horrified to still see all these super tiny beige bugs moving around on my raspberries after thorough washing x3! 🤢 Horrified to see the counterfeit kosher labels exists - that’s awful. This was so interesting!! Thank you!!!

I love to learn, especially from you. Even on my fourth or fifth rewatch of your videos, there's always something that I didn't notice before. On a side note, I want to thank you. I've been having a dreadful time falling asleep for the last few weeks. All my usual sleep aids have failed. Until I decided to try playing one of your playlists. Your voice is so soothing, my brain finally slowed down and I was able to sleep soundly at last. I cannot thank you enough for becoming another refuge when my thoughts just will not stop even at stupid o'clock in the morning.

Hi Sarah. I love to learn from your wonderful and engaging videos. Wow. It takes a lot and these days it pays to be extra selective for choosing your food. I've seen kosher aisles at the grocery stores. I look for non-GMOband organic.often times I recognize the kosher symbols that are shown in your videos. Just thought you'd know.

Me to! With my dad I was raised Christian but with my mom I was raised Jewish as she was . I used to just not be either because it was really confusing learning about two religions at once but now that I'm by myself I have decided to learn about judisam for it is the religion I belive in - I soon will be in the process of converting!

I love to learn! I was surprised by many things: I didn’t know that frozen veggies are probably not kosher without a symbol! My biggest shock was when you said that companies put a kosher symbol on something that blatantly has pork in it…I did a double take and even rewound to hear you again to make sure I didn’t mishear. May I ask a question? I noticed that a fig was on the non kosher side of your picture for the video. I did some reading and the article said that figs may not be kosher because they are the fruit from which Adam and Eve ate. Is this correct? Thank you so much!

As an Orthodox Jew,I have never heard that figs are forbidden.I don't eat them because they are too hard to check for bugs.

@yonaavrham Some rabbi do allow them but the Bedikah is almost impossible fresh and dry so many poskim and Va’ad forbid them altogether

@tinacotreau-guillot4870 Hi Tina! The issue with figs is that wasps use them to nest their eggs and therefore are often infested and or cannot be checked properly so we avoid them! Good question 🥰🥰🥰

I love to learn. As a person with a pork allergy I have learned to look for hechshers as a first clue that the food is probably safe for me. Since my husband is allergic to fish I then look at ingredients to see if it is safe for him (no kosher gelatin, only beef or vegan for us). My friends are always surprised to learn that candy or cereal with marshmallows or commercially prepared cornbread mix contains animal products. Haha I did not realize that companies counterfeit the hechshers so I will keep a closer eye. Thank you for the link to the website! You are such a blessing in my life. Thank you.

Hi Sarah, I Love to learn. What I did not know is that you could not have milk with fish. Funny thing is, my mom never let us have cheese or milk with fish. Her ancestry only by two generations was Jewish. She passed away many years ago, but I would love to ask her the origin of not eating milk with fish. I loved when we had a fish dinner which was every Friday due to my past Catholic back ground. . I disliked milk and would be allowed to have water or a soda with our meal. Soda was a real treat since mom was very careful to make sure we ate and drank only good things and sugar items were a once a week treat. Also, thank you for the heads up on real kosher certification. Gosh, I never knew about the gelatin being made from pork.
