Like both of you, I have the Nikon D7100 and looking to mirrorless, Fuji or not. For my purposes, I love my now old Nikon but I don’t shoot sports and the nature I shoot doesn’t involve fast moving creatures. I agree Nikon’s support of DX lenses isn’t great but I can make do with them and really, 4-5 lenses is the most I’ll ever need. I’d probably like a D7500. However, at age 61 with neck and shoulders not what they use to be, going small (mirrorless) is very appealing and Fuji has terrific lenses.

My question is: between the XT4 (or XT3 if you haven’t tried the 4) and the XS10, which you would prefer taking with you for non-professional outings? The XS10 seems capable enough for most situations. Would weather sealing be an important enough feature to choose the XT4?

To: SnapChick and Hugh - Thanks to both of you for your recent videos on this camera. I am an ancient old SLR/DSLR geezer who is only now in the process of seriously shopping for my first mirrorless camera as a travel alternative to my wonderful, but all-too-heavy Nikon D850. Being a mostly Nikon guy (but, not a fanboy), I had been just trying to decide between the Z6 and new little Z5. But, the result of your two videos is that I will give a serious look at the X-S10. I have no idea what motivated Fuji, but for me, the new PASM dial approach does make this camera more appealing. Not only is it more familiar, coming from the Nikons, but to me it just seems more practical. I mean the physical shutter speed dial is a nice homage to the past - and indeed the cameras I grew up with - but to heck with that when you are trying to get the exact shot you want as quickly as you can. I can’t speak for others, but for me the PASM with two control dials is just more facile and faster. The biggest question I have to answer for myself is whether I want to back off from full frame to crop for my travel photos. Methinks I need to try this one out and compare images from it and one of my Nikon FF’s. For, as I told Hugh over the weekend: In the end, the love you take is equal to the images you make. :-) All the best. Thanks again. JW

@@johnwheat1542 - I'm certain you will be disappointed John if you compare images from the X-S10 with your Nikon. Stick with full frame, Z6ii or Z7ii or wait for the followup to the Z50 if you want compact, due end of this year.

@@davidhenderson5051 David, Thanks. I have no doubt you are right about that. I was already thinking that while the X-S10 looks very appealing on size, shooting experience and ergonomics, I would likely be disappointed in the images. I do a lot of landscape work where dynamic range and resolution are important. I am still in the market for a smaller, lighter travel set up to take when the D850 and its glass are just too heavy. I may get the Z5 & Z 24-200mm for that. But, I’m still keeping the D850. The images are just too gorgeous - as you indicated. I think that camera has probably spoiled me on IQ. I like how you put this camera into the perspective it fits in. It is not a camera which competes with the top-tier cameras, and yet sadly, many people will expect it to be. But it has great features, is easily affordable by a great many people and will take great pictures. My only regret was not waiting a few months longer for it as I bought an X-T30, but that is a great camera as well.

Well said. It is an APS-C format which doesn’t seem to be quite the “thing” it use to be. As a Nikon D7100 who is happy with his camera EXCEPT really wants/needs the size and weight of mirrorless, this Fuji looks nice and at a competitive price point. My biggest issue with Fuji is being limited to only Fuji lenses and their price point.

Fuji if you plan to add more lenses in future. Fuji if you shoot only JPEG and like the Fuji colors (look at sample images at dpreview or flickr). Nikon if price is important and the (very good) kit lenses can give you what you need. Nikon if you already have some good F-mount lenses. Nikon if you prefer more "punchy" colors. Nikon for landscape, Fuji for street. I would go into a camera store and try the cameras there. You will immediately see which camera you like most. IBIS can help a lot to shoot with very low shutter speeds hand holding - but the in-lens-stabilization of the Z lenses is also good. I personally wouldn't buy the X-T3 because of the horrible grip. But everyone has different hands and preferences ... I moved from Nikon to Fuji, still like Nikon more but they don't release the lenses I want for Z mount.

Because Fuji totally needs another potpourri camera name. Thanks for the video. PASM not a deal breaker for me. I prefer a larger less noisy sensor and high dynamic range. Correctly exposing highlights (even slightly under exposing) in low light with enough detail left to pull from shadows is vital to me and in this regard Sony wins when factoring in AF performance and range of glass options.

I have had my eye on Fuji cameras for a while, but have not been able to end up with an X-T3/X-T4 yet. I am wanting to make videos as well as photography, and my current camera doesn't have an input for an external mic... I am thinking that this camera, with the 18-55 would be a perfect way into the Fuji X system... not to mention Sigma/Tamron don't seem to be making K-mount lenses much anymore, and the Pentax 70-200/2.8 is a bit more pricey ...lol. Do you think the kit lens would be good for video, general photos and snapshots, and also make at least decent portraits until I can get something with a wider aperture? I'd love the 50-140/2.8, and possibly a teleconverter for it eventually. First would likely be the 56mm, then the longer zoom, then the fast 16mm and 35mm primes... do you think amy of the above would work for macro-ish closeups of painted miniatures...? They're fairly detailed little gaming figures in the ramge of 1 to 2 inches tall... Lastly, for outings like camping, or day trips, or sports events that are all day/weekend, would you suggest getting a couple extra batteries and a separate charger? Can't fathom for a $1400 camera/lens kit that they make you buy the charger separately... Thanks for the video, hope to check out more of your channel soon...

IBIS supporting lower shutter speed is more useful than it sounds. If you want to increase depth of field, or show movement, IBIS gives you more creative options without a tripod, and keeping the ISO low for high quality images. In-lens optical image stabilization cannot compensate for camera shake that rotates the camera along the symmetry axis of the lens.

@@monlegaspi thanks for your prompt reply. I have Nikon G lenses and unfortunately, based on Viltrox website, the adaptors they have for Fuji do not have autofocus :(

Im curious, When in aperture priority mode on the X-S10, what happens when you turn your aperture ring to "A"? Does it go Full Auto or "P" mode and then back to Aperture Priority when you turn the ring back to an F-stop setting? Just wondering how Fuji dressed that in this body. Also I noticed the S-C-M shooting mode switch is gone. Is it now a Menu or Function Button setting?

Thank you for the review) I'm tending to buy this camera and your video proved that I've made the right choice. Have a question for you: what power bank do u use with x s10, is there any specific model or any will do?

What to buy? Nikon z50 with both kit lenses 16-50 and 50-250 for 1.200 eur or fuji xs10 with xc 15-45 for 1.050 eur or xf 18-55 for 1.350 eur and fuji xt30 with same lenses for 100 eur less? Thaks

They are all great options. If you like to shoot handheld video, the X-S10 has IBIS, which is helpful. Other than that, they're all great options. I'd recommend getting them into your hands in a shop to see which you like using best. :)

Thank you for a great review SnapChick! Got this camera with the 16-80mm to get into the Fujifilm system and also use my "old" Canon EF compatible lenses with a Fringer adapter. It works wonderfully and I am very and happily surprised.

Hi, great well thought out review. I'm really trying to find one bit of information that every review seems to have missed. How are the pre amps for audio recording? I loved my XT100 but it was useless for video as the audio sounded like you were recording with a chorus of hissing adders. Any information much appreciated :)
@LeighAndRaymond3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I've seen your videos before so it's funny to see a comment from you here! To your question, I've never used the audio straight out of nearly any camera because it's usually not very good. I always use an external mic. I did go back and check a couple videos from this camera to make sure, and it seems like the audio straight out of the camera is decent, but it's definitely not completely clean. Luckily, this camera has a mic jack. :)
@Astrolavista3 жыл бұрын
@@LeighAndRaymond No way, what a small world! :) I much appreciate the time you took to go back and check, that's very kind of you :) I never really use the inbuilt mic's on cameras either, well apart from my Go Pro which sounds ok. I used my XT100 for content creation and stills, but sold it due to the camera pre amps that drove my lav or shotgun mic being very hissy, even with the DB gain set really low. I've short listed the XS10 as it looks like a really fantastic hybrid camera, I just hope they used better pre amps. Don't judge me but I'm actually considering something like the Canon XA11 for content creation. XLR audio ports and IR night vision plus 20x optical zoom...not exactly in vogue though lol Anyway, I enjoy your reviews and appreciate the reply :)

If you like to post process and shoot more photography than video, the a6400. If you don't like post processing and shoot more photography than video, the xt3. If you do more video than photography, the XS10. - WW (Wandering Wolf)

Is this camera better then Nikon z50? For sure it has a fully articulated screen. Something that Nikon is not doing. Taking risks reaching out their base customers.

Neither is better for every person. They are both great options, but it will largely be personal preference, like what lenses you already have, what specs are the deal-breakers for you, etc.

With my current camera with its PASM dial, I always get confused for which dial does what in each mode (aperture vs shutter speed, changes depending on the mode you're in) and the direction in which to turn the dial still confuses me from time to time. Then on top of that, the dial on the back used for ISO also doubles for setting shutterspeed (in addition to the top dial for shutterspeed) further confusing the controls I think that I'll like the more traditional control scheme that Fujifilm has on its XT-series cameras better, as you hopefully get used to just knowing which dial does what! (Well, except when you put it in the 'C' position of course that turns control back to one of the flexible command dials for the positions that they couldn't print on the main dial... There goes your muscle memory)

Thank you for this awesome and detailed review! I'm just planning to buy a camera, but I'm still hesitating. I don't know which one would be the best for landscape, travel and street photography from X-S10, XT30 M2, Nikon Z50 or maybe Sony A6400? Which one would you recommend in terms of image quality and low light performance and focus accuracy for the above mentioned styles/modes? Thank you so much for your answers and help! 😀✌️

Next time you want to process raws of a new camera, just change the EXIF information to an older model with the same sensor. exiftool can do it as a batch operation.

Yet another amazing review...thank you. What I want to ask is where would you place it in respect of the XH1 and XT3? I rely heavily on my XT3 when I am out doing landscape photography, however, my XH1 doesn't get much action at all...I just don't seem to get on with it. I am considering letting my XH1 go and replacing it with the XS10, what do you think? Again, thanks for the amazing content :)...I don't suppose you know when it will hit the shops for sale do you? Thanks.

Having a PASM dial is insanely bad.. I have both - that dial on my Nikon dslrs, and the Fuji dials on my Fuji’s... the pasm dial is never touched on the Nikon’s, making that dial an absolute waste of space, at a top panel placement where space is at a premium.

Not so sure there are "no bad cameras" out there. Sony managed to suck the life out of photography for me. One thing you didn't mention was EVF quality. I'm worried it's too small or resolution is too low. For me, 3.69m dots - or whatever, is the minimum, but that's not available in this price range.
