Hey, I am similar to you. I am now 51 y/o female. I started starch solution just prior to the lock downs. I lost weight during the lockdowns. I started at 217 pound and over the span of 2 years I got down to 150 pounds and then I stayed there. I was still over weight. I am now 165 pounds because I lost faith and started eating less strictly but never just threw caution to the wind. I never exercised though. At all. The good news is I am healthy, I'm not obese and I have no pain, no arthritis or any of that. I am energetic and have good moods also. So it's not all bad of course, starch solution has done wonders for me. I think we are outliers. I am also a volume eater like you. And I binge eat sometimes, my binge eating though is more of eating a large amount of something starchy, like bread or rice, not doughnuts, chips, pizza or stuff like that. It's disheartening really but I am so grateful for at least being healthy even if I am overweight and can't seem to get over the hump or whatever. Question: Do you lose weight when you do Mary's Mini? I don't watch your channel regularly because I don't watch any channels regularly because my lifestyle is too crazy. But I'm curious because I am thinking of eating Mary's Mini style on a longer term basis even though it's only supposed to be for 10 days. Thanks! PS I think you are awesome and you are among my top KZbinr's!! Thanks so much!!

I feel your pain, Joey. I'm a 67-year old WFPB vegan and STILL had weight-creep over the last several years. I now do a 75/25 plate, with 75% non-starchy vegetables and 25% starch. That is the only way I've been able to get rid of the extra belly-weight I had gained. So, now I'm down to 155 (shooting for 150) at 5'8" and I'm much happier. I eat out with friends about once a week (you've got to enjoy your life!) but make healthy choices. You be you, and I'm so happy you found your path. Cheers!

You hit the nail on the head, Joey. I'm 80 years old, following the advice of 30 something weight loss gurus. I've found, for us older folks, we need to count calories....or at least be aware of the amount of food we're eating. I also don't exercise with the exception of walking my dog 4 to 5 times a day. I'm lucky if I HAVE a metabolism at this age.....Iol. think you'll find that the weight will start coming off now that you've found the secret. Good luck to you.....and I love your channel.

I hear you! I lost 20 pounds in the beginning as well, and then I started, adding in some of the vegan processed foods and gained my weight back and my metabolism is really slow down. I believe what we need to do, which isn’t as fun is do our plates more 3/4 of a plate of lean carbs and only 1/4 of the starchy carbs. That’s also wet high carb Hannah and the others say when they’ve hit a plateau. They don’t do the 50-50 plate at that point. There’s a lot less calories in the non-starchy carbs they’re just not as fun to eat.

I'm a 62-year-old woman and vegan for 7 years. I have perfect bloodwork and take no medications. Recently, I started my raw food, high fruit journey. I had to stop with the starches. I was eating potatoes, pasta, beans, and rice as part of a cooked vegan diet. But I noticed weight gain, especially in the last year. Then I read that metabolism goes way down after age 60. Metabolism slows down at my age. I remember back in my 30s when a friend of mine told me how her mother, in her 70s, ate like a bird but could not lose weight. It is harder to lose weight as one ages. I warned my best friend to be careful eating so many starches. She is whole-food-plant-based as well as her family. Her husband co-wrote some chapters in Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book, "Fast Food Genocide." My friend was preparing meals for herself, her husband, and teen grandsons, meals with lots of starches. But as a woman, she started gaining weight, whereas the males didn't. I came to the conclusion that the younger people, especially men, can eat all these starches because their metabolism is higher. Things went ok for me until around age 61. I did not gain weight eating starches, but I didn't lose weight either. But about a year ago, pounds packed on even though I was eating the same foods. So now I am following Dr. Doug Graham's 80/10/10 diet of 80% raw fruits and vegetables, 10% nuts and seeds for fats, and 10% protein foods. In 4 months, I've lost 25 pounds. I want to lose another 25 pounds to get down to my college weight of 120 pounds. I am only able to accomplish this by eating most of my food raw, cutting out starches except for hummus and occasionally quinoa and lentils, avoiding oils completely, and doing intermittent fasting. I have a 6-hour eating window during weekdays during which I drink 2 nutrition-packed smoothies with lots of bananas, greens, and other superfoods. On the weekends I eat 1 meal a day (usually a large salad) so fasting 24 hours in between. I don't really count calories because raw food calories burn off the body faster than cooked foods, but I try to stay around 1200. Most of that starch solution is designed to keep people feeling full the way they used to when eating animal products. I was afraid that if I ate raw foods, I would be hungry all the time, never feeling full. But quite the opposite is true. I feel satisfied eating primarily raw foods (I still eat steamed veggies or soups a few times a month). I feel perfectly fine not feeling stuffed. Rather than my stuffed stomach telling me to stop eating, my brain gets a signal that I've consumed enough nutrition and that is how I know to stop eating. I feel great and I don't have that lump in my stomach that requires several hours to digest.

Thank you Joey! You spoke us for all of us that don’t fit the vegan box of weight loss philosophies. We are the silent invisible group who keep following along but don’t raise our hands to say NO this does not work for all. I, like many who have commented, am an older woman (68). I adopted the plant based lifestyle 12 years ago right after I lost my husband to cancer. Yes, it was Forks over knives that moved me in that direction. I did lose a good amount of weight initially. Then came menopause and with it metabolism pause. I continue to eat plant based religiously. I feel better when I eat this way. But I’m still fat. No not extreme but I’m a big girl. I eat right I exercise and all that jazz. I started tracking calories like you are doing too. It’s still a slow process. I’m truly tired of ALL the plant based gurus old and young who preach that if you eat the right foods you can eat as much as you want and you’ll lose weight! I’m also tired of the reprimands they dish out saying if you’re not losing weight you’re not doing what they told you to do. I’d like them to recognize those of us in this comment thread and all the others like us out there. And maybe just maybe it’s time for everyone plant based or not to recognize and embrace the fact that people come in all shapes and sizes. Just because we are not rail thin does not mean we are not healthy. Sorry for the rant….we’ll sort off. Keep up your good work. Thank you.

Joey, thank you for this. I'm 57, a yoga teacher (teaching 2-3 classes a day 4 days a week), I'm post-menopausal and within the last year the weight seems to have become very comfortable around my middle. I know something needs to change but haven't been able to clarify exactly what it is that needs to be tweaked...BUT I'm healthy. Much healthier than most people my age. I'll keep trying different approaches, keeping in mind my body type, age, etc. Ultimately, I have nothing to prove to anyone. For me, it's simply a matter of me being comfortable in my own body. I appreciate the acknowledgment that as we age, our bodies change and respond differently. It's part of the beauty of being given the opportunity to age.

Try & focus more on raw foods, especially juices to hydrate the body at cellular level. Many of us are chronically dehydrated at cellular level. Without enough water & minerals to enable the body to use the water properly, the cells cannot cleanse & detoxify properly, nor can they absorb & utilise nutrients effectively or burn calories very well. I drink juices & smoothies, but also water with unrefined mineral-rich grey moist sea salt & my body loves it. So many foods & drinks are dehydrating (including most cooked food, tea, coffee, alcohol, etc), because it forces the body to use way more water to process it than it supplies. Dr. Brooke Goldner’s healing protocol uses smoothies but also lots of water to help the body flush toxins.

you did it wrong... go on a meat based diet, as humans are not herbivores
@alisonbamford6723
@alisonbamford6723 9 ай бұрын
@@theantiveganchannel3596 I did that - for well over 8 years Keto & then Zero Carb, but eventually not only did my digestion finally, after struggling for some time regardless of what I tried, throw in the towel & refuse point blank to digest animal protein any more, but my insulin resistance also flew into orbit & not even loads of injected insulin could get my blood glucose down to anywhere near normal. It was a scary time. So, having no option but to go plant-based if I wanted to stay alive, whilst my BG remained high for the first month (in which I just juiced, to give my poor beleaguered digestion a break) as my body cleared out the ectopic fat, around the end of the month my BG dropped, my insulin sensitivity returned & I had to radically cut my insulin intake from 50+ units per day, to just 20 or even less. I hate the ‘them’ & ‘us’ haranguing between the carno & herbo camps. At the end of the day they are on the same side! You know, the side of whichever diet helps any individual to heal! The real issue here is the highly processed & refined garbage, and any diet that includes that is unhealthy. There are many healthy carnivores, but there are also healthy herbivores (a well-known powerful tennis player comes to mind). I prefer to refer to the healthy herbo diet as ‘whole food plant-based’ (WFPB) because many vegans base their diet around very unhealthy highly refined & nutrient-stripped wheat & sugar, that no longer resembles the nutrient-rich whole food it once was. Having been well into both camps, I can clearly see advantages in both, & what is obvious to me is that no one size fits all. Some may do well on one, some may thrive better on the other, & no one has the right to criticise (unless it’s about the garbage……)

Joey, Joey, Joey. I just watched your video and felt like you were singing my song. I've been plant based for over 12 years and initially lost 50 lbs. at age 62. Now I'm 74 and have continually battled creeping weight gain instead of losing that extra 25 lbs. so I'll no longer be in the "overweight" category. Like you, I have charted my weight daily and kept a weekly average chart ever since I changed my way of eating. Also, like you, my health improved so drastically that I don't dare give up and go back to my old ways of eating. For the last 5 years, I've been charting what I eat every day and (like you) noticed that I do well when I have a eat at home routine, but gain the minute I eat elsewhere. I finally figured out that I can't eat the same amount of calories at 74 that I did at 62 and have recently been trying to be aware of that 1200 number that seems to keep me at my current weight. I am now concentrating on making every calorie count and following Dr. Fuhrman's advice on eating more low calorie highly nutritious food. What a journey this has been. I was so pleased to watch this video and see that I'm not alone in the plant based weight loss struggle. I've been watching you and Tim since Lex was a little sprout. I appreciate the way you keep it real and just wanted to let you know that you guys are an inspiration in so many ways. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your channel. You nailed it. I started the WFPB diet 8 years ago, am now 66. At first I lost a lot of weight, but as the years went by the weight slowly increased. Unfortunately I bought into the "as long as it is WFPB you can eat as much as you want" mantra. The doctors, like Esselstyn, Ornish and McDougall, got a lot of it right, but not when they don't warn about the issue with excess calories for those of us with slower metabolisms they do a dis-service. That said, regarding the parts they got very right, I am also happy I went WFPB because, other than dealing with weight issues, I feel and test very well.

Oh boy, Joey, does this resonate! I’m in my 50s, too. I was eating healthy and losing Mon-Thurs, but would not eat so healthy or eat out on the weekend with my family and gain it all back by Monday. In April, I started tracking everything on My Fitness Pal. I discovered I need to eat between 1400-1500 calories/day and be CONSISTENT every day to lose weight. I’m down 16 pounds after losing and gaining the same 3 pounds (like you) for years. I wish I didn’t have to track my foods because it takes a lot of brain power sometimes when I make a new meal or sauce and have to figure out portions and calories, but this is what is working for me. Like you said, everyone is different and we each need to figure out what works for each individual. All the best to you. ❤

THE STARCH SOLUTION KEY is the starch vs vegetable ratio. If you have a hard time losing weight increase the vegetables. Never lower the amount of food. Cut back on the starches a tad.

Thanks for being transparent and vulnerable. You are not the only one who "just eat plants for effortless weight loss" doesn't work for. You are doing great noticing the pattern and getting very consistent and serious about it. Awesome. Keep it up. You are doing great. Also props for eating that smoothie for three weeks. That's dedication.

It is so refreshing to hear someone say this, and you have done all of us such a great service with your heartfelt honesty. I so appreciate you for making this video! I just turned 74 and have been plant based since 2020. When the pandemic began, I also put on weight, but soon embraced the PB way of eating and lost weight, but steadily I have fallen into patterns that you are addressing here and slowly gained back the weight. I realized the plain and simple truth is that we are all different and that at my age, two plates of potatoes and greens is too much in one meal. Again, thank you so much for your honesty and so you were brave enough to make this video... so needed to hear this!! I am sure I am not alone. Sending you and your family much love.

Sorry it is so long but I want to comment on both weight loss and on what makes your channel so good. I’m 69 and after watching those same WFPB KZbinrs and the PCRM exam room for a few years I’m off the BP and cholesterol meds. After a cancer scare I now feel confident that I am on the right diet. But my healthiest weight would be 20 lb lighter and it isn’t budging. I’ve been thinking many of the same things you cover here but in my case I am not willing to give up eating out once a week at a restaurant or another home. I’m currently trying just reducing the starch portions in my regular meals, measuring the oats in my oatmeal, the starches in my greens and beans bowl or soup, my nuts and seeds for the day. I eat just those two meals a day, an afternoon snack of tea with fruit, and just herbal tea in the evening. In a restaurant I order from the appetizer or salad list or just leave half of an entree. No booze and no dessert. Its just another way of reducing calories. We’ll see what happens. Maybe I’ll try your smoothie idea to quickly knock off some pounds. Now on to your channel, it is really special in the WFPB crowd! I’ve stopped watching Kiki, Chelsea, Hannah, Dillon, Gaz, Pick up Limes, Alexandra. They’re great but for someone else. I’m not living those lives or aiming for a really cute bare midriff selfie ; ) I don’t watch KZbin shorts or hour+ long ramblings and really appreciate your focused 30-ish minute well planned and edited videos. I’ve mastered the basics of WFPB eating, collected a ridiculous number of recipes, and now want inspiration for living a full, mature life this way. My current favorites are you, Derek and Crystal because they inspire me to cook in a simple kitchen, get some exercise, enjoy your partner, animals, and local nature spots. I also like PB with J. All three of you share lives and families that are imperfect and your cooking style is fun. You are among the very few that inspire me to live a full Dr Ornish style life (eat well, stress less, move more, love more). And I love your channel because you are a teacher, one of the most important but unappreciated professions in the world. ❤

It took me *years* of not wanting to admit this basic little thing... mostly because I didn't want to admit that I wasn't going to be able to eat like my friends who can eat anything do. I didn't want to be the one who had to count calories. But you know what? I am. I've been obese my entire life, and WFPB for almost 3 years. Low-oil WFPB helped me a lot, health-wise. I'm no longer diabetic or hypertensive, which is AWESOME, and it's given me help with my multiple sclerosis symptoms as well, which, that's a whole new lease on life, lemme tell ya. But I was still very, very obese (350 lbs! at 5'4" and struggling to not go OVER 350 lbs when I was gaining 10 lbs a year just living!). I finally accepted that, for me, those online BMR calculators were inaccurate, and I did exactly what *you* did, to find my REAL BMR. I didn't like the number, but I *do* like that I've gotten my weight down to the point, now, where I'm under 300 lbs and know how to stay there. I don't lose very fast -- only a pound or 2 a week, to be honest, but now I am actually mobile enough again to be able to swim every day, now that high-starch HCLF-WFPB eating has taken enough pressure off my body that I can move around. I'm probably never going to be thin. I'm elderly and disabled, and I'm happy, now, just to not be steadily having my weight creep upwards. Truth is hard, sometimes... but I'm not sorry that I finally listened. Thank you for putting yourself out there. It's not easy, but you're doing valuable work.

Joey, thank you so much for this video. I am 57 and I can completely relate to your situation. I started the starch solution during Covid too. I didn’t start it to lose weight, I started because I have a lot of health issues. A happy result was the weight just fell off. I am raising my 13 year old grandson . Once everything opened back up I ran into the same problem with my eating. I also had emergency surgery which was followed by four subsequent surgeries. When you are in a constant state of recovery you often have to rely on other people to feed you. Needless to say I have gained all my weight back. I am happy to be here today to keep fighting the fight to lose weight. Had I not been eating WFPB oil free, I am sure I would not have lived through 5 surgeries. I watch every video you put out and you keep me inspired to keep going. Never once did it occur to me that you have not been successful. To me this way of eating isn’t about losing weight, it’s about health and living my best life. Thank you for being so honest and vulnerable. The starch solution is working for you in so many ways and it shows. Thanks for being you. ❤

I didn't start losing the last of the weight until I limited my evening meal to veggies and salad. Lost 10 pounds in time for a family reunion. And I'm 57, so middle age has nothing to do with it in the majority of cases. Fat around the waist is the most unhealthy and can be the most difficult to get rid of, but it is possible. It's not easy, believe me I know. Your recipes and videos have been incredibly helpful, and I am the biggest fan of your cauliflower cheese sauce. For other videos, I tend to watch those like Chef AJ and Nan Simonsen, who are a bit older and are certified in the lifestyle medicine field.

You speak truth. Volume eating has been oversold in the WFPB community. Lindsay Nixon has addressed this as well. The point isn't to cram in as much as you can, it is to eat a healthy amount - i.e., until you are no longer hungry, not until you are stuffed or even feel "full." (I like the way Dr. Fuhrman puts it - "you shouldn't be aware that you have a stomach.") I understand the appeal of all-you-can-eat, but the older you get the more difficult it is to lose or maintain a healthy weight that way. And after decades of my own ups and downs with WFPB eating, I'm convinced that overburdening your body with more food that it needs isn't good for you regardless of the effect on your weight. Digestion takes a lot of resources - food in excess of what you need is just unnecessary wear and tear on your body. Calorie deficits enhance longevity for a reason, and fasting aids in healing for a reason. I love HCH and Derek Simnett, but I understand that I am older, less active, and just can't justify eating as much as they do. (And to be fair I don't think the only reason people watch Derek is because he has his shirt off half the time. Personally I find that off-putting, but I still watch because I enjoy his recipes, positive energy, and encouragement to stay active.) If it makes you feel better, I love your channel and don't judge you for the struggle. We live in a society with an extremely dysfunctional relationship to food. We all struggle. It helps to know I'm not the only one.

So I do starch solution too, but I also count calories. Most of the time my plates aren’t 50/50 more like 25/75 heavy on the veggies. I’m female and 5’5” and I’ve always had to eat less calories then the charts say to maintain my 122lb weight. I eat between 1200 - 1500 calories a day myself. Welcome to my world. acknowledging this on your channel will be a breath of fresh air to all of us low metabolism folks out there. Hi Joey, thank you for this video. My husband and I had been eating a whole food plant based diet for two years when I was injured and became disabled. For the past three years my husband has done all of the cooking, as well as helping me with things I can not do for myself. He really had no idea how much time I was spending to make the healthy food I prepared for us. He thinks he should be able to spend less than thirty minutes preparing a meal from scratch. He also uses more nuts and calorie rich foods than I chose to use. As a result I have gained weight. He has not. Life can have very difficult choices. We may be doing the best we can and have to accept that. I enjoy your videos and hope that you won’t be discouraged by the viewer inquiry.

I ate as much as I wanted, but gained if I ate too many nuts. I too just realized I need to monitor my calories after I did the Mary’s mini. I barely lost 5 pounds doing the mini and started immediately gaining some back when I went back to eating a small amount of nuts and dried fruit. By the way I work out in fitness classes 3 to 4 days a week. Since I’m only 4’11” my BMR must be really low. Thanks so much for confirming what I was beginning to believe. I applaud your truth and bravery. You articulated the challenges and misunderstandings many of us who have battled weight and all its surrounding challenges for our lifetimes. I am now 64, and it has consumed my life since the age of 10. Each time I listen to a weight influencer or someone who has successfully lost significant weight and kept it off, my hope is reignited only to be dashed on the rocks of a very slow metabolism reality. My mom just died of Alzheimer’s and the last words she said to me before she no longer recognized me were, “well you’d better lose weight.” She had not even seen me in 14 years. It is a huge tragedy that so many are harshly judged for what is almost impossible to control.

I hope you’ve had the opportunity to read the comments and see how many people relate to what you are experiencing. I personally don’t watch your channel to lose weight. I enjoy you, your family, the recipes and the overall vibe of your channel. I will never understand why people find it necessary to leave negative comments. There are so many WFPB channels available, just move on and find one that resonates to your particular situation, personality and reason for watching. I’m 69 years old and follow a WFPB (mostly SOS) lifestyle for health reasons. I did lose about 20 lbs when I started it 3 years ago and haven’t gained any back. That being said, I don’t have the appetite I did when I was younger. What works for me is a hardy breakfast, midday snack and early dinner and I don’t eat after 7. I totally understand that doesn’t work for most people but I’m retired. Good luck with your new regimen. Your faithful followers will continue the journey with you. 🤗

Joey, thank you for your honesty! I too have been struggling lately and I know why, too many calories. So, I'm 53, female, menopausal, on a cancer drug, and I'm a bulk eater too. The problem with the starch solution is, the non starchy veggie side of the plate is not the one I want to fill up on. And I know what you mean, all the people that say you can eat as much as you want don't clarify that it's not the starches, because a potato fills them up,it's the non starchy veggies, and that doesn't work for me all the time. It's much easier to pop a potato in the microwave then make a salad, so that's what I do. !😂and I'm not naming names, but those influencers who are our age and stay skinny, either do eat an inordinate amount of veggies, or one big meal a day and have a higher satiety rate. They also cut out everything that gives me joy, salt, sugar and fat. I can't do that for the long haul. I'm of the belief that you must find the thing that works for you that you can do the rest of your life. Everyone is different. I appreciate your struggle and am in the same boat! ❤oh, and I love to have fun in the weekends too, my biggest downfall!

I appreciate you doing this video. At 50 years old and perimenopausal, the weight isn’t falling off like it did for the starch solution KZbinrs I initially followed when I started this journey. To be fair, I started this way of eating for health reasons, not weight loss, but I was looking fwd to weight loss happening as well, and it hasn’t. I’m not willing to live on 1400 calories just to be skinny, because you can be curvy and still be healthy, but it was good to hear from you that I wasn’t “failing” at doing starch solution eating, I was simply not in a calorie deficit for weight loss. We each have to do what’s best for our individual bodies and it’s good to hear from someone who isn’t young and thin about what does and doesn’t work. Best of luck to you on your weight loss goals, but if you don’t lose a ton of weight and decide subsisting on a small amount of calories isn’t worth it, you won’t lose me as a subscriber. ❤

This is an amazing video. I have felt the same way about the Starch Solution regarding the amount of food one can consume and lose weight. I am going to be 75 this fall and I have also decided I need to do more planning to lose weight. So I have decided to get out a very old WW plan and count points while staying true to plant-based eating. I am just starting this so I’m not sure how it will work. But I know I need to do something as I have about 50 lbs to lose. I have tried the Maximum Weight Loss plan but I don’t do well without any bread products. I do make my own rye bread with no oil so it is very low in calories (30 calories a slice). I do not have bread daily but about 3 times a week. I love potatoes and rice. Even without losing weight at this time with the SS, I feel healthy and my lab results are good so no matter what, I will continue. I have come to the point that the thought of consuming animal flesh gives me the heebie jeebies. Keep up the amazing videos. I rewatch videos and enjoy your family camaraderie. Thank you for all your work. It makes me happy to visit with you almost on a daily basis when I go back into your KZbin site and revisit my favourite recipes.

Thank you for always keeping it real, Joey. I am pretty much the same with having lost hundreds of pounds and gaining it all back 😂. Those weekends are my downfall too. And yes, starch solution is a great way to eat for health but I agree with the calorie deficit. I am 62 and often forget that I’m not 35 anymore. You are the best and we are all so thankful for you and your full disclosure all the time. Stay well, healthy and happy

Love you guys! Of course you have nothing to prove to any of us. Obviously you are super healthy based on your tumor video which was so inspiring. That is the most important part of course, health. Those 30 yr olds are also moving all day. They don't have desk jobs like most of us. Keep up the good work. Love the recipes, personalities, banter, garden and how y'all keep it real. Such as this video. ❤

Oh man, Joey! Why you gotta go telling the truth like this??! This is such a dose of reality, but at the same time, it really spoils all the magical thinking I have with Starch Solution.😢 I love nothing more than watching Broccoli Mum eating HUGE portions, or High Carb Hannah making rich sauces with nuts, seeds, peanut butter, etc and then telling myself that as a 52 year old, I can do the same! Then later I'm baffled as to why my scale just isn't playing along.🤷 Thank you for having the courage to share this person's comment, even after deleting it. Your honesty and desire to figure this out inspires me to take a more honest look at my diet, stop feeling sorry for myself and figure this out. I also love that you spoke honestly about calories! So often I see influencers being attacked for daring to speak about the calorie content of food and the need for a calorie deficit in weight loss. Thank you again for this much needed dose of reality. I'll be watching this video a few more times and then taking a closer look at my own diet.♥

Thanks for this video. We are the same age, I'll be 59 at the end of November. I have always struggled with my weight and as I've gotten older it has gotten harder. I can't stay firm or hard muscled like I used to. Our skin starts to wrinkle and sag even with exercise. Aging is hard and not everyone can look like super models. I'm trying to learn to love me as I am and know that I'm doing what I can for my health and mind. That's all we can do. I think you are fabulous and your videos are awesome. You are very relatable for someone like me. I'm not intimidated by you because I have the same struggles and I don't look good in a bikini. Please keep doing what you do. Thank you. Sending hugs because we all need more hugs!

I have always thought that I cannot compare myself to a 35 year old, I am in my late 60's and its really difficult to lose the weight as we get older. So thank you for your honesty and it motivates me more to continue following you and Tim. I like the antics and the playfulness you guys exhibit.

Joey, thank you so very much for your honesty, transparency, and vulnerability on this topic, and actually in All of your content! My hubby and I are right there with you on this journey, and all that you have discovered and shared is 100% accurate. We are the same ages, and have the same struggles. I have lost 30 lbs, and am still needing another 12, hubby is struggling with a bigger weight loss and, much more with some physical limitations, also he is not yet 100% WFPB, but making very positive progress in that direction. Weekends out, family and friend gatherings, and holidays are a real challenge! Love you for all your content, your humble wisdom, and your willingness to share, and help us all. Blessings 💚🤗

Nutritionist here…here are things to keep in mind no matter what you eat: *Older folks need less calories *Shorter folks need less calories (substantially less) - if you are shorter regrettably you will need to move more so you can eat more calories and you will need to do some kind of physical activity every day *Folks who don’t workout in some way daily need less calories *Menopausal women need higher protein and should limit starches as these convert to sugar and menopausal bodies just do not cope well with glucose. Kiki, Hannah, none of those women are in menopause. Every woman has different hormonal issues during menopause so it’s hard to say what works for one woman will work for another. The fact remains that women will need more protein. *There is no perfect miracle diet - every person responds differently to various diets *Folks tend to underestimate the calories they eat *Calorie counters, bmi calculators, calories on labels are often not correct *Different circumstances along our life journey impact our stress levels, which impact how we eat, how much we can exercise etc, hence our weight can increase *yes you absolutely must be in a calorie deficit to lose weight This is all just a small list of factors; eat healthy most of the time, eat whole foods and stop taking what influencers say as gospel. It might work for them but is not necessarily right for you.

Thank you for being real Joey and for having the courage to say this out loud and clear. I am a bit older than you. I have been on SS since 2020 and bought into the “Ad Libitum” way of eating, but did not lose weight. It makes sense that we have to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight, no matter what age and no matter what diet. Now we know better, we can do better. Thank you 😊

You made a wonderful and important video, and I thank you for your courage and honesty. I have been a vegetarian/vegan for 53 years now. I am not thin, and like you, am working to adjust my diet according to the starch solution to lose weight. I am 70 years old, take no prescription drugs, have perfect heath test scores, and feel great and optimistic about the future. My parents and grandparents all had health difficulties at my age. I think the answer is definitely the food. I know Dr Weil feels that it is good to maintain some body fat as one gets older. I'm not sure if that is true. Dan in Scottsdale, AZ.

This happened to me Joey, in January I decided to join WW only to count the points I’m eating with my pant based lifestyle, I have lost twenty pounds since I did this, and I am at goal. Most of WW is free points to eat on starch solution, but I have cut back on potatoes and a few other foods, and was surprised how many points some of my healthy foods where… I didn’t go out for dinner in the 7 months, and to be honest I don’t miss it, my food is delicious, and I know what is in it. I just can’t believe how many points I was eating, and I’ll be honest since I cut back the amount of potatoes, and limited my starch the weight just fell off… I concentrate on lots of vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils For breakfast I allow myself one slice of Ezekiel bread with tomato and veggies , or a big bowl of fruit like strawberries, blueberries, and a few spoons of stone ground oatmeal.. I found out out of the 23 points I’m allowed daily, after searching the WW app, 1 TBS of oil is 5 points WHOA so glad I don’t eat oil 99.9% of time, my oat milk is 5 points for my coffee, so this leaves me 13 points daily, thank goodness i eat plant based PS for the record I am 72 and lost the 20 within 5 months..I went from obese BMI to normal BMI I lost three sizes with this 20 lb loss, blood work came back perfect Good for you for bringing up this subject, it will help MANY

Great video! You look awesome to me. I am 69 years old. 3 years ago, I worked with Healthy Emmie and lost 18 pounds. I feel great eating SOS. I have always said that losing weight is much easier than maintaining it. When I went on maintenance, I gained 7 pounds back. I would love to be back where I was but like you, I have a life. After a lifetime of dieting, I have finally learned to accept that I will not look like Emmie, Kiki, or Hannah....I am kinder and more gentle with myself and focus on how I feel, that I only take one medication and all that I can do at my age, compared to my friends. So, keep up the great work! Thank you for your channel! Sparkles, joy, and blessings! ✨🥳🙏💕

Dude. I am TOTALLY feeling you! Hubby and I were both dedicated to The Starch Solution/WFPB for a year and a half. But we started to experience symptoms. Skin/hair/nails/teeth problems. Joint pain, blood pressure, and anxiety. We've both shifted to a more ketovore approach, and we're doing much better. But it's STILL a challenge to lose the weight. We're both 61. I can WATER FAST for seven days straight...and yeah, I'll lose a few pounds. But the weight comes right back on as soon as I start eating again. But why does calorie deficit not work? Does severely reducing calories slow your metabolism? So many factors! And the whole thing is totally FRUSTRATING! Thanks for your transparency. I love you guys!

I have been a healthy-ish vegan over ten years now and now that I am 50 my weight gain has gone up dramatically. Thank you for sharing this because I was feeling very defeated. I want to lead people to the vegan lifestyle by example but it is difficult when you gain weight. Knowing your BMR seems way more important than I thought since everything I have read says eat whole food plants and you will be at a healthier weight. I just want to let you know you are not alone and your content is valuable to other middle aged LGBTQ vegans ❤️ Thank you
