Thank you for laying this out. I feel like a lot of WFPB doctors tell us how much protein we need to survive. I want to know how much protein I need to thrive as I age. This is the first time anyone on the channels I followed laid out the struggle of getting enough protein for those of us in our 50s/60s/70s. And thanks for showing us how we can address it for ourselves.

I have found that eating grains whole allows me to eat less calories because they are a lot more filling. I cook 3 or 4 cups of oat groats for the week (I’m hungrier in winter), I use bulgur, spelt or sorghum instead of rice. I Add them into soups too. I do eat quinua everyday too, but it’s not as filling.

This is EXACTLY my story. I've been lifting weights for 15 months. I switched to high protein/lower carb vegan in September and lost 35#. I'm eating 1400 calories a day. Lower protein doesn't work for all vegans. I'm definitely putting on muscle. Vegan Gym is a lifesaver.

Congrats Joey. I am a bodybuilder , I am wfpb, and train folks. You are are on the right track. Many wfpb folks don’t understand the critical protein fact , ie it protects your muscles as well as grows them. I do use a very clean protein powder (vedge is good) to get to my 200g/day. I weigh 225 at about 12-15% body fat. Kudos for making this video and committing to achieving your goals FOR YOU. (And I am 60 too!!)

As a very short, elderly woman, I'm in the same boat as you with a BMR of about 1100 calories per day and a much worse percentage of body fat. Add to that fibromyalgia which makes working out excruciating at times. My diet has been all over the place but keto/carnivore were disastrous for me so I'm now going plant based and am hopeful. Looking forward to seeing what recipes you come up with for us oldies. Thanks.

As a senior female with FM and 5 years WPB, I’m 73 lbs less. I’m also hypothyroid. I have learned that Dr McDougall and Naturopathic practitioners like the TSH to be around 2 -2.5, when others allow it to be around 4. Thyroid really slows your metabolism

I’m new to this channel. It was a pleasure to see another senior vegan that’s focused on eating more protein. I’m 57 years old and definitely noted the difference in wanting more whole food plant based protein after menopause that started at 51. I love tempeh, tofu, nuts and beans daily along with all the other wonderful plant based foods of course. Working out at the gym and swimming always helps too. Stay strong Joey. I appreciate your honesty. Would be nice to see you start an online high protein group for vegan seniors. :)

I don’t usually comment but saw your video and felt the need to say thank you for being so honest about the protein issue! I am currently 48 and have been Whole Food Plant Base for over 4years now. It has Changed my life! I was able to reverse my Lupus because of my diet change and will never go back! Unfortunately, all the information out there is so confusing and never seems to address the protein issue. I don’t want to bore you with the details about my WFPB journey but want to mention that I did lose a lot of weight when I started but I think I was losing muscle as well. About 2 years into being WFPB I became weak, started being exhausted all the time, noticed hair loss and started gaining the weight that I lost(not what I wanted to happen). I met with a nutritionist/trainer found out my protein was too low and so were my calories. Looking at my height and the goal weight that I want to be at I have to take in about 120-130g of protein and taken in about 1300 cal. I need to also do less cardio and more weight training to increase my metabolism (due to the muscle I have lost). I am allergic to soy (which is tough being WFPB) so I have been supplementing with pea protein called “Naked Pea”. The only ingredient is peas but it has leucine, which I have learned is an important amino acid for muscle gain. One serving has 27g protein and 120calories. I put it in everything and have been able to meet my protein goals. I have been feeling so much better! I have noticed changes in my body and I am on my way to meeting my goals! I am stronger, have more energy, my hair is growing back and still Lupus free! Protein is important but you just need to pay more attention to it being WFPB. It can be done!😉 I wish more people addressed the protein in Plant base diets to meet everyone’s goals. Thank you again for addressing the protein issue and I look forward to seeing you meet your goals. Stay strong!💪

Thank you for sharing your story. I will be 59 this month. Due to an unknown illness I went form 189lb. to 112 lbs. in less than a year. My doctors and nutritionists kept stressing that I eat more meat and dairy. I tried that and it just made me sicker. I am slowly becoming plant based. The only animal protein I eat is fish about once a week. I have no muscle mass anymore and it shows in my weakness. I am SOOO looking forward to your recipes! I am not concerned about calories, I need to gain weight as well as muscle.

I don’t need to lose weight but I am losing muscle and have been diagnosed with advanced osteoarthritis and both my knees. I struggled so hard getting enough protein in my diet. I use a ton of Chia seeds, I drink about a cup of soy milk, a day in my tea and fresh edamame couple times a week. I hate tofu so that is out for me. I ended up adding wild caught salmon once a week which was hard for me since I’ve been vegan for 20+ years. I was pretty freaked out about the osteoarthritis. I feel like potatoes, rice etc work for others but not for me to lose weight. My Muscles are at a loss, i feel, and feel lower energy.. how does it work for others to lose weight, I dont know. Maybe some age related, hormone thing? In early 60s hypothyroid and had been somewhat low in vit D as soon as winter hit but working on that with supplement. So MAYbe this is key-more protein! you look so much better. i've been swinging back and forth between low carb high meat and low fat vegan and i am still 280 pounds with high cholesterol!!! currently trying mostly vegetarian by adding in near fat free chicken meat and cottage cheese. i know that isn't an option for true vegans. i am so happy to find this information. i agree that the endless dieting from age 10 to 65 has resulted in very low muscle mass and a ton of fat. i finally see how i need high protein to succeed. trying the starch solution didn't work for me. everyone is different. if you start out obese and have lost your muscles, a high starch diet won't get rid of 100 pounds of fat, especially if you are over 60 and not very active. this info is so helpful!

You’re not alone in this situation by any stretch. I’m 65 years old and I’ve done the strict potato diet many times and I’ve been a vegetarian for 40 years and a vegan for 10 with plant-based changes over the past couple years and I’m still about 20-22 pounds overweight, with a body fat of 30+, so let’s see how this goes for you and good luck! Perhaps we will all learn something along the way with you that we have needed to know all this time, too. Meanwhile, I’m curious to know about the higher protein in nuts, like almonds and macadamias, and how they help out with the protein deficit. Or not.

Nuts are high in protein but very high calories as they are high fat. Legumes are the better choice, however if you want to do like Joey even they have too much energy.

I love this so much. I’m excited to follow along with you. I’m eating higher protein now as well because I am an endurance athlete. I have been WFPB for years. About 4 years ago I dialed things in and lost 20 lbs eating this way within a few months. I also lost a ton of muscle. I was very educated in this area but didn’t put the protein and muscle loss equation together until later. I gained back about 10 lbs when I became a runner, which I really probably needed and a lot of it is muscle. Now what I am doing is eating higher protein to support strength training and endurance sports. I’m 53, 5’3’’, small frame, 115 lbs. and I’m focusing this year on body recomposition, training smarter, eating more protein, and all within plant based living. So I’m super excited to be on this journey with you!!! Also, more protein helps with muscle recovery and bone health! Let’s do this!

I love textured veg protein, it is so versatile. I make all kinds of burger like fillings for wraps, tacos and Sheppard's pies. I am like you and really struggle to lose weight. I am a 67 yr old woman who has been plant based for 5 years , I cycle 50-60 miles per day during the summer, I run 5 miles a day and lift weights and I am still overweight. Going plant based didn't change my weight at all, and I don't eat a lot . BUT I am very healthy on no drugs and can do anything I want without pain. I have decided thats good enough for me. Good luck on your journey, You are not grotesque, please be kinder to yourself❤

T H A N K Y O U for this video!!!! I’m in this exact same boat and trying to figure out how to be high protein vegan (and a previously staunch WFPBNO eater) in a calorie deficit!!!! I am so here for this!!! I’m 5’2 51 yr old and protecting our muscle is critical to being a healthy person over 40! I was using a calculation of 0.80g of protein per pound of goal weight which has me trying to get 86g of protein daily below 1400 cal. 🥴🤯

I so appreciate you for being honest here. I'm in the same boat. My concern (for both of us) is the glyphsate and other toxins we could be exposed to with the meat alternatives and higher protein pastas that are not organic. Will you please talk about this more? Joey this video is amazing. I think a lot of us were led to believe we didn't need to worry about protein on a vegan diet. I remember being surprised when watching the Unnatural Vegan would talk about protein a lot. Long story short, I started tracking my food on chronometer and there were days I was maybe getting 25 gm of protein...it was scary and shocking. I began having protein powder to bump up my protein. Also the idea a lot of us were sold was we could eat as much as we wanted...again not true! I am seeing a lot of KZbin channels that are realizing they need more protein. Just FYI I can't wait for you to hit 100,000 subscribers because your channel is awesome!

I so appreciate and completely understand what you are saying. Before my conversion to my plant-based journey (3 1/2 years now) I was a vegetarian and worked with a sports nutritionist. I was working out regularly, eating healthy, and not getting the tone that I wanted Like you, I didn't want to be a bodybuilder but I wanted some muscle tone, to have my clothes fit properly, and lose about 5-10 pounds. His eating plan was easy to follow, was high protein which included vegetarian protein shakes and bars, tofu, a small amount of peanut butter, fruits, and vegetables with practically no carbs. The program worked but I was unable to sustain it as I never felt completely satiated. When I started eating SOS plant-based, I lost about 20 pounds, felt really toned, my clothes fit great and for the first time, I felt satisfied when I finished eating. Over time, I have relaxed and added some "maintenance" foods (pasta, crackers, hummus, and an occasional glass of wine) that have caused me to gain about 8 pounds back. I don't feel as toned as I did on the nutritionist plan and have been toying with working with him again. Your explanation of keeping muscle and burning fat and the BMR made it all very clear. Your results after a month is wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to share this part of your plant-based journey with us. I am very excited to follow you on your journey and I wish you all the success. I also look forward to seeing your recipes. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! At some point soon, I think I am going to try eating more plant-based protein and regularly working out. By the way, I am a healthy 70-year-old female. Wishing you great success - sparkles, joy, and blessings!

A million thank yous. I'm 51 and in pretty much your same boat ( only eat 1400ish plant based calories a day, having difficulty getting trim) I've taken a different tact by increasing my diet with about 800 calories a day of what I call protein bombs (tempeh or seitan) and then I burn an additional 800 calories a day with cardio and resistance training. Seems to be working, but I'm looking forward to more of your content on this journey.
