Thank you for laying this out. I feel like a lot of WFPB doctors tell us how much protein we need to survive. I want to know how much protein I need to thrive as I age. This is the first time anyone on the channels I followed laid out the struggle of getting enough protein for those of us in our 50s/60s/70s. And thanks for showing us how we can address it for ourselves.

This is absolutely the basic info (not losing critical muscle) that WFPB ignores. Starch based, at least. Thank you for sharing this. Particularly as you age.

I have found that eating grains whole allows me to eat less calories because they are a lot more filling. I cook 3 or 4 cups of oat groats for the week (I’m hungrier in winter), I use bulgur, spelt or sorghum instead of rice. I Add them into soups too. I do eat quinua everyday too, but it’s not as filling.

Congrats Joey. I am a bodybuilder , I am wfpb, and train folks. You are are on the right track. Many wfpb folks don’t understand the critical protein fact , ie it protects your muscles as well as grows them. I do use a very clean protein powder (vedge is good) to get to my 200g/day. I weigh 225 at about 12-15% body fat. Kudos for making this video and committing to achieving your goals FOR YOU. (And I am 60 too!!)

As a very short, elderly woman, I'm in the same boat as you with a BMR of about 1100 calories per day and a much worse percentage of body fat. Add to that fibromyalgia which makes working out excruciating at times. My diet has been all over the place but keto/carnivore were disastrous for me so I'm now going plant based and am hopeful. Looking forward to seeing what recipes you come up with for us oldies. Thanks.

I love this so much. I’m excited to follow along with you. I’m eating higher protein now as well because I am an endurance athlete. I have been WFPB for years. About 4 years ago I dialed things in and lost 20 lbs eating this way within a few months. I also lost a ton of muscle. I was very educated in this area but didn’t put the protein and muscle loss equation together until later. I gained back about 10 lbs when I became a runner, which I really probably needed and a lot of it is muscle. Now what I am doing is eating higher protein to support strength training and endurance sports. I’m 53, 5’3’’, small frame, 115 lbs. and I’m focusing this year on body recomposition, training smarter, eating more protein, and all within plant based living. So I’m super excited to be on this journey with you!!! Also, more protein helps with muscle recovery and bone health! Let’s do this!

I’m 65 years old and I’ve done the strict potato diet many times and I’ve been a vegetarian for 40 years and a vegan for 10 with plant-based changes over the past couple years and I’m still about 20-22 pounds overweight, with a body fat of 30+, so let’s see how this goes for you and good luck! Perhaps we will all learn something along the way with you that we have needed to know all this time, too. I don’t usually comment but saw your video and felt the need to say thank you for being so honest about the protein issue! I am currently 48 and have been Whole Food Plant Base for over 4years now. It has Changed my life! I was able to reverse my Lupus because of my diet change and will never go back! Unfortunately, all the information out there is so confusing and never seems to address the protein issue. I don’t want to bore you with the details about my WFPB journey but want to mention that I did lose a lot of weight when I started but I think I was losing muscle as well. About 2 years into being WFPB I became weak, started being exhausted all the time, noticed hair loss and started gaining the weight that I lost(not what I wanted to happen). I met with a nutritionist/trainer found out my protein was too low and so were my calories. Looking at my height and the goal weight that I want to be at I have to take in about 120-130g of protein and taken in about 1300 cal. I need to also do less cardio and more weight training to increase my metabolism (due to the muscle I have lost). I am allergic to soy (which is tough being WFPB) so I have been supplementing with pea protein called “Naked Pea”. The only ingredient is peas but it has leucine, which I have learned is an important amino acid for muscle gain. One serving has 27g protein and 120calories. I put it in everything and have been able to meet my protein goals. I have been feeling so much better! I have noticed changes in my body and I am on my way to meeting my goals! I am stronger, have more energy, my hair is growing back and still Lupus free! Protein is important but you just need to pay more attention to it being WFPB. It can be done!😉 I wish more people addressed the protein in Plant base diets to meet everyone’s goals. Thank you again for addressing the protein issue and I look forward to seeing you meet your goals. Stay strong!💪

I feel like potatoes, rice etc work for others but not for me to lose weight. My Muscles are at a loss, i feel, and feel lower energy.. how does it work for others to lose weight, I dont know. Maybe some age related, hormone thing? In early 60s hypothyroid and had been somewhat low in vit D as soon as winter hit but working on that with supplement. So MAYbe this is key-more protein! Been a high protein vegan for awhile and I consistently feel better getting at least 100g protein per day and everything else in balance (fats are not scary, females need fat for hormones). I'm more satiated, lean and energetic and can do all the activities that I like to do with no issue. I eat quite a bit more and stay lean due to higher protein, eating balanced meals and activity. Its the way to go if you want to improve your body composition. As we get older we have to switch things up. Good luck on your weight loss journey.

so glad you're doing this!! I went from keto to vegan and gained 40 lbs. I didn't want to eat meat, so I stuck with it. Low and behold, I went back to eating meat, thinking that would help me shed lbs... it didn't. Thank you so much for your insight! Looking forward to upcoming videos

Aloha Joey, I m a 62 year old female, I have been plant based for 7 years. I'm overall healthy like yourself, but I too feel I have a little too much body fat, I think I eat enough protein daily, after watching your video, I realize I'm probably not eating enough protein has I need. I look foward to watching you preparing new high protein meals. Mahalo Nui Loa from the Garden Isle..🌺🍍Elaine

Appreciate this - been looking for a higher protein WFPB-ish diet for my husband and me. I like that you are focusing on protein. I can't find a lot of that on the WFPB KZbins I often go to. I also like that you are not trying to bulk up like a lot of the high protein vegan KZbins seem to focus on. Protein and losing weight or maintaining weight are important and little attention is paid to the issue, so thank you for doing this. I also like the one-on-one talk you did to explain things. I look forward to seeing some recipes and hearing more!

Thank you for sharing your story. I will be 59 this month. Due to an unknown illness I went form 189lb. to 112 lbs. in less than a year. My doctors and nutritionists kept stressing that I eat more meat and dairy. I tried that and it just made me sicker. I am slowly becoming plant based. The only animal protein I eat is fish about once a week. I have no muscle mass anymore and it shows in my weakness. I am SOOO looking forward to your recipes! I am not concerned about calories, I need to gain weight as well as muscle.

Actually, I am in a somewhat similar situation. Only bc I'm not quite 5 feet, and am almost 61. I have to be mindful of 'making every bite count.' I would say that this need to be 100% perfect, pristine, only whole foods, no oil, sugar, salt can ultimately end up dissuading people from becoming or sustaining plant-based diets. I am in your FB group, tho I'm not on FB much, but I don't want to post in there when adding foods many have come to deem off the menu, incl. and perhaps especially the plant-based doctors. What people want to be aware of is that those doctors are helping people that have advanced disease states, and/or are very over weight. A starch-based diet, too low in protein and fat can be counter productive to fat loss. Don and I have been on this treadmill for sure! Also, studies show that inclusion of those so-called processed foods like TVP can have positive health benefits. It's sad to me how many vegans now demonize these foods, once considered great options for vegan and vegetarian diets back in the 70s during the early years of the natural foods movement in our country! I suggest checking out Vegan for Life by Jack Norris, RD and Virginia Messina, RD. They dispel many of those myths, and discuss the importance of increasing protein, not only as vegans but as we age. A very informative book. Look forward to seeing your results. ~Tracy

Thank you so much for your video. Same boat: 61 YO and having trouble dropping the visceral fat and gaining muscle. I get so exasperated, at times, with the vegan videos talking about how just going WFPB will solve all your health problems. Over 60 is another story. I can't wait to see the new meals you'll be incorporating. Your enthusiasm for health is infectious and much appreciated.

I so appreciate you for being honest here. I'm in the same boat. My concern (for both of us) is the glyphsate and other toxins we could be exposed to with the meat alternatives and higher protein pastas that are not organic. Will you please talk about this more? Thank you for what you do, it means so much to so many.

PlantBasedDads, I was in a similar situation at 53 soon to be 54 I wasn't happy with the way I looked and needed to loose weight. I had been Vegan for 10 years, so was having the fake meats with the oil, chips and all the Vegan crap. Then about 3 weeks ago I decided to go totally plant based and do intermittent fasting doing 16/8, so eating from 12 miday until 8 pm. I have managed to loose 5.4kg or just under 12lb in 3 weeks, and the crazy thing is that I don't feel hungry. I have 2 main meals and then just before my eating window closes I have a few pieces of fruit.

I’m in a similar boat. My BMR is only 1403. Did you know about Explore Cuisine Black Beans Spaghetti? Also, spirulina is very high in protein, but I haven’t quite figured out how to incorporate it into my diet.

I had my rmr measured by a breath machine with a mask sitting still in a chair .. i’m 5-10 and my rmr was 1520 … my bmi was also 30 (I was 220 lb) I went plant based and run 3.5mi/day and dropped 70lb to get to 155lb. I’ve since added another 10lb as people were telling me I looked like a concentration camp survivor. I didn’t count calories .. I just quit eating high calorie crap ..including bread. I’ve now added an extra 2.5mi run in the evening .. so basically10k/day .. and that’s enough to really drop pounds .. now I’ve also, added an hour of CrossFit (strength training) at noon each day. I’ve never counted protein I’m 65 so, a similar age to you. Running 10k/day burns around 600kcal … I’m unsure about the CrossFit calorie burn .. 8m guessing 150kcal ? So .. I’m roughy stagnant (weight wise) at 1500+600+150 + (25kcal * 12 “moving” per hour) == 2550kcal … however, I doubt I consume more than 1900 … good luck … anyone that says your not “whole food Is an idiot … tofu and soy milk are processed foods … so are all the vegan nut butters …I do find it odd that I’m not losing weight considering the exercise amd only eat a better bowl for breakfast/fast and a plant based whole food dinner … apparently one’s body adjusts … who knew

So glad I found your channel. I think I may have some of the problems you are up against. I am 62 and female. I am only 5'1". I can not lose weight at all,. I don't have much to lose at 118, but I have way too much body fat. I think my metabolism in non-existent from working 3rd shift and going 24 hours at a time without eating. I am also vegan going on seven years. Somedays, I am lucky to get 20 grams of protein. I did the Vegan Gym's calculator and it suggested I have about 1446 calories and 53 grams of protein. I have recently semi-retired and have started to workout and do some light weight lifting. Going to increase my protein intake and watch the calories more. I am not a big eater due to losing most of my taste in 2020 due to covid so will really have to work at adding more protein. I also do not take any prescription medications, knock on wood. Lol

I plateau on the Starch Solution after 1 year. What's working for me is eating less cooked food and incorporating more leafy greens and salads in the day. Mainly getting carb sources at the back end of the day and generally from root vegitables. I drizzle Lemon and ACV on my greens and my salad. I have a large sandwich box of leafy greens In a morning. I eat a serving of berries everyday to. I got for chia and flax, occasionally drop them out and have a serving of nuts. If I rotate my carbs it's generally more optimal carbs like Sweet potato, white potatoes, Rice, Beans, then less optimal (rarely)oats pasta.

Appreciate you doing this. I have to move from WFPB 100% to some kind of...something different just for now. I started taking GLP1 medication to lose weight. When i do meet the protein goals of 100g + I lose more weight. When I dont, it is a very small amount of weight. Seitan is a no go for me unfortunately (Celiac). I will be returning to WFPB 100% when I am done with this season, as well.

One comment on the statement „Eat less calories than you burn“: You can stop worrying about the eating side of it, if you just burn more. Then, you can go beyond the 1300 mark and still lose weight!!! Problem solved. How: just walk the stairs instead of taking the elevator, do all those things outside of the gym, than makes your body move!

Joey you should consider supplementing with vegan friendly Perfect Aminos! At 62yo I take 4-servings spread thru out day, gives me 120g highly absorbable protein and only 2-calories per serving. I gain weight easily just by looking at a protein shake, but having great success since I started taking Perfect Aminos. Best wishes :-)

YES!!! THIS IS WHAT I NEED!! My metabolism is really low. 😢 My doctor keeps trying to get me to stop WFPB because she says there's too many carbs. Our eldest daughter passed last year. Greif does crazy things to our bodies. It causes inflammation, high cortisol and basically throws your body into shock. I didn't care what I ate as long as it was vegan. I need to get back on track. Maybe this is the answer for me also. I don't track my protiene, but I'm sure my intake is lower than it should be.

0.75 to 1.2 grams protein per kilogram of body weight would be normal. 1.6 to 2.0 is the claim by some bodybuilders, but the body recycles protein and eating a variety of plants should even out the amino acids. All plants have all the amino acids, just at different ratios and we don't have to be balanced at every meal. Now you have me curious what Robert Cheeke said about this in the book "The Plant Based Athlete". When I lost 50 pounds during 6 of the 10 months I did lose muscle too because of the fasting. The months I did not lose weight was because of eating too many nuts. All WFPB-SOS, Now at 68 I don't want to lose any more muscle, but still want to lose another 50 pounds. I see a lot of walking to bring blood sugar down and start burning fat. Maybe a hand full of flax seed afterwards to stay in fat burning mode and suppress my appetite.

Definitely keep up the high protein. Surprised he only put you on a touch 7% calorie deficit. Generally 10-20% is the norm for someone who isn’t morbidly obese. Cycle that 3 weeks per month with one week per month back up to your basal metabolic calories, then continue the cycle 3 weeks on and 1 week off. On your week off keep up with the Whole Foods, high protein goal. Not a YOLO week off

I lost a lot of weight (60 lbs) on the starch solution but I was not getting enough protein according to my calculations in MyFitnessPal. Over 65 you really have to increase your protein. I started to make my own seitan, increased my tofu, bean and tempeh intake and am now eating 1.2-1.5mg/kg of body weight. I still have not lost more weight. I have a shoulder issue and can’t lift weights but I do a fair amount of lower body weight work and I walk 2-3 miles a day. Even with my exercise my metabolic rate is about 1750 calories. It is hard to eat less than 1500 calories daily getting so much protein in, watching my calcium intake for osteoporosis and eating some starches, vegetables, fruits and a few healthy fats. I am 72 and lost the weight from ages 65-67.

Preserving muscle is particularly important for the elderly (i said this many times and saying it again- you don't look 60..not even close!) But with that said, plant protein does help you gain strength without any of those issues associated with animal protein! I'm vegan for animals..but animal protein (especially from meat) is bad... And can easily be excluded from one's diet..
