One thing I never noticed till recently: In the Mustafar duel, Anakin attempts the same overhead leap that Obi-Wan used against Maul. Because of that, Obi-Wan anticipates it and counters Anakin, winning the duel. Knowing that, when Kenobi says, “Don’t try it,” on Mustafar, to me it kinda reads as, “I know what you’re about to do. Don’t make me do this.”

Also, idk if its legends now or still cannon but apparently as Anakin was a padawan and still training he used to use training droids to replicate mauls body and practiced the exact same leap Obi Wan did to Maul in order to impress him. tbf, I don't hate the talking at the start of the Anakin vs Obi Wan fight, those characters had an established relationship so it makes sense that Obi Wan would try, in vain, to pull him back one last time before they fight. Qui-Gon and Obi Wan have almost no prior dealings with Maul, so the lack of pre-fight chat is appropriate in this case.

Grieveous was an amazing warrior though. He was later turned into what we know him as in the movies, similar to what happened to vader. definitely not a jedi or a sith, but I loved the character none the less and loved all his scenes in the movies. When I first seen him, I didn't realise he was basically a xenos cybrog, I thought he was a mech that was mimicking an organic lifeform with his raspy breathing. was quite puzzled by it tbh. didn't find out till later what he actually was, and this is when I started to like the character a whole lot more.

Dave Filoni actually went even deeper with this very recently. He talked about how Maul's sole purpose in Palpatine's eyes was to kill Qui-gon. This sets up how Anakin did not have the right master for him. If Jinn had survived and trained Anakin, Anakin would have had a closer relationship with the Council and would have been better prepared for losing his mother and Padme. Palpatine's plan to convert Anakin would have been a failure, for Anakin would not be so angry and fearful about losing Shmi and Padme, leaving the temptation of immortality utterly useless, all coming together to make this one duel the most important in the history of the Galaxy.
@pudgeboyardee323 жыл бұрын
Hence the term duel of the fates. Its also why qui gon is the one to teach yoda and others secrets of the force as a force ghost, though a formless one.
@LegitimateCK41203 жыл бұрын
While I agree somewhat, I think Maul's purpose there was to make sure the Jedi couldn't help the people of the Naboo destroy the Trade Federations plans for Naboo. Qui-Gon Jinn was somewhat of a renegade and wasn't even on the council, as instead of going with what the council wanted, he'd follow the "Living Force." I think Jinn would've been a good master for Anakin, but Sidious' manipulation of Skywalker would've still happened, and I don't think Jinn would've changed anything about it (imo only). You have to remember that Anakin did tell Obi-Wan about his dreams and his mother, but truthfully there wasn't anything more he could've done. Anakin's fall to the dark side was as much down to his own choices than his master's teachings; I think Obi-Wan had done a good job given the circumstances. The council distrusted Anakin because of the darkness he had and the lack of willingness to let those he was close to go

I'm honestly shocked at how many people fail to realize what went on when Obi-wan cut Maul in half. It's clear that his jump would never have worked normally; Maul's senses were just too fine-tuned to be taken by surprise like that. He could have just held his blade straight out and let Obi-wan cut himself in half lengthwise on it. When Obi-wan was looking so intently into Maul's eyes, he was momentarily scrambling his thoughts, as can be clearly deduced from Maul's baffled frown. Obi-wan then used this moment of confusion to get the jump on him. It was a technique that dabbled in the dark side, done out of desperation and anguish over losing his master.

To add to this, it might be what lead to Obiwan's heavy use of the force persuasion and focus on a defensive fighting style.

Actually there is a reason for dooku's and kylo's lightsaber design. Dooku is supposed to be a master duelist and Christopher Lee actually requested the design to make it more practical. The reason why kylo has a cross saber is because his kyber crystal is damaged, thus needing an exhaust port to prevent it from exploding. Anyways that's all. Great video

2:59 using two single-bladed saber with a curved hilt is less nonsensical than a double-bladed one. In combat, your mind tries to keep track of each blade separately, effectively doubling the number of possibilities. But the two blades are connected: by knowing the location of one, you are automatically aware of the location of the other. In actual practice, the double-bladed lightsaber is more limited than the traditional lightsaber. It can do more damage, but it is less precise. It requires longer, sweeping movements that don't transition well into a quick stab or thrust. And then you have curved hilt sabers. The use of curved hilts allowed for more precise movements as well as near-perfect flexibility when engaged in lightsaber-to-lightsaber combat. Curved hilts needed to be held more in the palm, farther away from the fingertips. The hilt's curvature also gave the wielder more power when delivering overhand strikes and would change the angle of the attacks by the merest fraction of a degree; this was usually just enough to confuse and disorient an unsuspecting opponent. Some techniques were more difficult when using a curved hilt, but many others became far more effective.

I recall reading in a book that's probably no longer canon that Maul liked to go into a force-induced trance to help him keep track of both blades at once. What I personally love about the ladder half of this fight, namely after Qui-Gon is struck down. Is that it ultimately comes down to a duel between two refined apprentices. I feel Qui-Gon lost because he was older and couldn't keep up with Maul's tricky moves. Not necessarily because he was weaker, Maul just finessed him. Whereas after the fact, the fight has now become personal for Obi-Wan. And this is conveyed through how much more aggressive he becomes right out of the gate. This is an emotionally charged apprentice, who just witnessed his master suffer a deathly blow, and now not only has to face the man who killed him on his own immediately after, but now has to fulfill his duty as an apprentice. By not only surpassing his mentor, but also succeeding where he failed. A bit redundant sounding, but I think my point is sound. 😂

I had a fight with someone on the metro platform in the city. Whole place went Star Wars crazy over the return. The dude who initiated this had a padawan, but he broke his light saber by accepting a challenge by someone with a stick :D shame the latest trilogy didn't inspire similar events. has been such a let down.

Ok so here's my take about the "gimmicky lightsaber argument" I'm pretty sure dooku curved his hilt so he can switch from a defensive stance to an offensive very quickly or something like that (that's the main reason he's a good duelist) Greivous's spinning mechanic was used to scare the Jedi cutting off their connection to the force to almost always ensure his victory. Kylo is some emo teen who knows nothing of the Sith and tried to make a lightsaber, cracked the crystal and made it all weird and fucked up. He had to install 2 exhaust pipes on the side and it gave the saber the crossguard look. Although it's never used because a saber would miss the guard and go through the hilt.

Dominika Perła LIGHTSABER DUELS I dunno what you’re thinking if you’re actually saying ESB and ROTJ have better lightsaber duels 😂

This scene is the first thing I saw about star wars. I remember entering a friends room and this movie was playing on the TV. I was mesmericed. My favourite scene and song in all star wars

The curved hilt allows a blade to be more of an extension of the forearm. This is a technical combat philosophy telling you about Dooku

One of the most positive and engaging Star Wars videos over the last year is about Phantom Menace? Wow. And its Good? Now that's full fat milk!

That very first duel holds a special place for me, Episode 4 Vader VS Kenobi. It's tense and gritty and there's an air to it, one that I don't think you can really get again nowadays. It's an air of mystery from before they fleshed everything out, the feeling that you're not getting the full story, just the last chapter of an old book. It didn't need to be super dramatic and flashy, it was two old soldiers in what might have been the last battle of a war already lost ages ago. I disagree with a ton of your points on this video, but that's just, like, my opinion, man! Great video, thanks for uploading it!

I've always thought that this fight and Darth Maul himself feel almost disconnected from the rest of the Phantom Menace, due to the sheer quality of both. Maul was an INCREDIBLE creation, and this fight was mature, intense, and just perfectly put together .... while everything else in the movie is clunky and a bit dull.

I'm pretty sure this scene was the first scene that George made in his head.

I appreciate the hard work and trying to convince me that this this is best duel. Buuut i still prefer Obi Wan vs Anakin. This is close second

I simply can't decide. What is almost certain, is that ObiVSAnakin is more emotionally charged. Much more. And it's the conclusion, and the zenith, of the whole prequel trilogy. I still can't decide.

"When I was a kid I always used to imagine the choir voices were force ghost of Jedi and Sith stoking the fires of battle in this history meeting," Y'know, if all of the vocal scores by John Williams were sung by force ghosts that would seem to fit in a sense in them honoring the history of both Jedi and Sith in the vain of Norse songs of battle, or something of the sort. Thinking it like that, it just seems to fit for me.

The most badass part about this scene was the fact that only qui gon and Obi wan knew who the sith really were and just how dangerous they were to the universe and yet despite that when the doors open and maul reveals himself every single person in that room that didn’t really get it yet just all of a sudden froze in terror and realized this dude is for real and he is gonna be a nightmare to deal with… and I mean common dude those sith tatoos are badass as hell
