There's another manufacturer called valvo max. They use a different design. Instead of a rotating ball valve it's a push valve sort of like a Schrader. It rotates in but doesn't have a valve sticking off to the side so it might fit between your headers. The thing that I like is it turns in and you have the Schrader valve internally but attached to it with a tether is a brass cover cap that threads onto that. So even if the Schrader valve was to fail and begin to leak you've got a secondary backup preventing any oil from escaping. When you're ready to change your oil you unthread the protective cap and then thread on a secondary device that they give you with a tube attached to it that presses in on that Schrader valve releasing the oil. The negative is you now have got something you got to carry with you or in the car in the garage to do the oil change. The positive is it seems a little more foolproof than the fumoto design with just depends on a single ball valve.

I looked at two of the many 'oil drain plugs' available on the market. Fumoto and all its strange names they call each type(they have about 5 types)....Then I researched Valvomax and some others. Since my skid plate is very close to drain plug...I choose the Valvomax because the threads that go into the drain pan are shorter..so more oil will come out with changes, and it comes with clear tubing to drain into a clear collapsible 5qt jug, that once filled, can carry to auto parts store and dump. I think Valvomax will work well on my car fingers crossed (Rav4)....but cant use it yet as just changed my oil. Valvomax also gives free return postage if the part doesnt work for any reason and lifetime warranty. I cant wait to experience an oil change with almost no oily mess everywhere on driveway due to winds and such.

suggestion: get a larger diameter oil drain pan and some paper towels, and jack up the car a bit more to give you more room underneath.

I swapped my engine with an identical FA20 and had a similar issue with the new engine but what was confusing is that the last engine had one of those valves that fit. The only thing I can think of is that I replaced the motor mounts with Autozone ones and maybe they sit just a hair lower.

For me my headers got in the way, factory headers clear I believe so it fits just fine. I have killer B aftermarket headers and they’re a bit bigger and sit a bit lower.

I used these starting in the early 70's and have used them on every vehicle I have owned since then. Back then Fumoto use to sell a cable kit as an accessory that you attached to the valve then mounted the other end somewhere up under your hood so you could open and close the valve without getting under the car. It can still be done but it looks like you would have to use 2 cables. I am daydreaming about getting a Subaru with the topside oil filter too so that would be a nice setup. As long as you can keep other people's hands off of it. Put a high temp grade neodymium magnet on the side (not top) of your oil filter. Better luck to you and take care of the Ru . . .

Since the regular oil plug has magnetic to suck any debris to keep it away from the engine, using this valve does make it easy to change the oil but do you worry about losing that functionality?

Use an oil extractor through the oil dipstick and you won’t even need to get under the car since the oil filter is in the top of the engine bay

Bad idea. Even if you get to the bottom of the oil pan you still won’t get all the particulates and metal that your filter couldn’t collect. They will collect at the bottom of the pan and will continue circulating through the engine until they are flushed out by draining the oil like you’re supposed to.

@@zackstaa7826 not true, this is common practice these days some vehicles don’t even have drain plugs anymore. Think bmw, Audi, Mercedes this is how they drain your oil at the dealership. There are many videos online showing that in a modern engine you can extract all the oil with an extractor then pull the plug and no oil drains out. I know this from actual experience as I worked in shops for years. Again though the key words are modern engine.

@@robertomorffi6856 I suspect the engines of those cars (or at least the oil pans) are designed to be drained that way. Unless so designed, the pan may have a slope or baffles that prevent sufficient draining by a pump tube through the dipstick tube.

Valve it's very useful and easy to use. I drive 5k miles every 5 weeks. So valve made changing oil way faster and easier.

They have redesigned it and there is one with a through-bolt that is free spinning that might alleviate your issue and still allow you to run the Fumoto.

Look at Stalhbus as well. On all of my cars including my STi, I use Fumoto valves. On my Mercedes though with the oil pan design and lip I used a Stalhbus. Both are great but the Stalhbus is a much lower profile. It's been on my MB for over two years now.. zero issues. Oldest fumoto valve has been on my 05' since new, so 16 years.,lol

Just got a fomoto (v2) put onto mine after engine rebuild. I asked the shop about them, who said they'd seen others with them and not seen any issues. Shop owner said he doesn't carry the valve only because it's too low a margin. I also got a Killer Bee oil pan upgrade, which has the valve sitting parallel to the ground, tucked up. No ground clearance issues. Also, why use old oil for lubing the filter? I always use a dab of the fresh stuff from the oil I'm about to fill it with. Finally, I had tried that "put pressure on it before" trick (before watching your video) and still got a bit of a mess. I think the intention of that is more to avoid losing the bolt in the pooling oil in your drain can. /my two cents

The issue for me was that the headers were already on and I didn't want to remove them because it's a pain. I'm sure that if I did it before the headers, I would've had no problem.

Just remove the aftermarket headers so you can install the fumoto oil drain plug…problem solved…😂😂😂😂

Might be a blessing in disguise! I installed one on my 15 wrx and after a week with the valve fully closed it was leaking about 1/4 of a quart every 2 or 3 days. Might have just got unlucky but I wasn't trusting something like that again lol

I have had one in my 2006 duramax since I bought it in 2010, so 11 years and it has never leaked and never accidentally opened, these valves were designed for marine engine applications, they added the plastic lock clip to appease car owners.

as someone else wrote.... prob better to get the other type since it has extra redundancy..BUT I dont see how these really help you still have to do the oil filter, which is even more messy on most vehicles (not this one it seemed). in 10 years people will be laughing at these videos, and how terrible and problematic 'old engines' were.

You just CANNOT list (or note) that the Fumoto is a “Failure” (because YOUR 🫵 custom headers are IN-THE-WAY!😡). It was/is therefore YOUR fault (NOT the Fumuto). So PLEASE always get your “Story” right/correct. So thus, BLAMING the Fumoto was YOUR 🤢🤮 error (not 🙅the Fumoto Value being at fault). 👎👎👎
