Tie-Dye Designs: Muck Dyed Starflower

In this video I show and explain the process that I used to muck dye a starflower design shirt. This shirt actually started as a pink shirt, and I used Out White Brite which removed almost all the color from the shirt. I then muck dyed the shirt in a starflower design. I show the entire process for reverse dyeing and muck dyeing the shirt.

Yellow usually dyes fine from what I’ve learned. I got actual Gildan swatches now to test with bleach for future reference. I know not all shirts are Gildan but I use them a lot.

You're right - yellow does dye up nicely. This yellow color is very light too. That's great that you got Gildan swatches. I usually prefer using Gildan shirts too, and it's been fun to experiment to see what color the shirt turns after using a color removal process. Let me know if you find any super cool colors that show up!

Maybe don’t add the same color pallet next time? Like no pinks or purples. I did a pink shirt but I didn’t remove the color and used Tea Leaves only on geode DOI and it came out pretty good. I have an olive green shirt that I plan on doing reverse to. Idk which colors I’ll use, maybe stormageddon. Thanks Angie! It’s beautiful regardless.

Thank you! I'm sorry you don't have access to OWB - it's really a great product! I know that there are other color removers available, but I personally have only used bleach, Jacquard's deColourant, Rit Color Remover and OWB. Dharma Trading Company and Prochemical and Dye sell a Thiox color remover that is supposed to be really good, but I haven't ever tried it. Perhaps there is something similar available where you live?

@@FunEndeavors You are so sweet to reply with so any options! Shipping is difficult due to customs but they sell RIT so I'll try that or bleach. How do you stop the bleaching action with liquid bleach and do you dilute it?

@@ZarpeParadise You neutralize bleach by rinsing it with water and then putting it into a hydrogen peroxide solution. I mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide (3% that I purchase from the drug store) with 9 parts water. I put the shirt in the solution and allow it to soak for about 20 minutes or so.

Maybe when you want some original color left when removing color from a thicker fold, perhaps do some sinew tying at earlier steps. Like tying lines around the long skinny folds before rolling it up into a spiral.

Out White Brite doesn't contain chlorine type bleach. It is sodium metabisulfite, sodium hydrosulfite and sodium carbonate.

Can you thicken out white brite? That might help in not removing all the colour. I've finally got some dying stuff on the way so will be doing my first proper dye next time it's sunny :) I've got some reverse dye shirts where I put too much bleach on so my first dye will be fixing them.

That's a good idea, but I'm not quite sure how to make that work. I normally dip shirts like this in the solution instead of dunking them. However, I was doing so many shirts that this one slipped by me.
