Just sold my R6 and bought a 2016 FZ07. Iv rode sport bikes for many years and like you I had a R1 and R6 but this bike literally changed my life. It’s possibly the best bike iv ever owned and ride! Also I’m happy you make so many awesome videos about this bike for me to follow along to with mine!

I definitely agree with all your points. I’ve put 10k miles on my 2016 fz07 and it’s been great. The plastic does rattle a little and suspension isn’t great but does the job. With cruising and eco friendly I can do 150 miles on a tank which is hard to do when living in California twisty roads. I haven’t test ridden other fz07 but after tuning my bike it woke it up for sure. I have gotten bored of the road so I might be trading it in for a dual sport some time in the future.

Nice review! My "swiss army knife" of a bike is my nc700x! Love this thing. And I use it a ton. I deliver on it full time and ride it more after that. Got the dct and it runs super smooth. Really good down low pow and decent highway power. I love that it can do many things pretty good, and not just one thing amazingly.

Thanks for valuable insights. From in-depth research, replacing the rear shock will immensely improve its handling performance (90% of its issues) for both rear & front. Öhlins STX Street ($600) or K-Tech Razor-R Lite ($500) are highly recommended.

Or an FZ09! The 07 is cute and makes okay power/torque, but the 09 is a beast. It's still light (only about 20lbs more). It's the exact same riding position. It sounds better IMO. The suspension is better. It looks the exact same when you drop the bars and headlight. It's got what... 40 more HP and 20 more ft.lbs of torque. The 07 lacks on the highway what it makes up for in the streets, where as the 09 is good everywhere all the time. It's kinda a no brainier for almost the same price as an 07 (both used). An analogy: FZ07: My 18 year old friend who I can hang with. FZ09: My 21 year old friend who I can hang, party, drink, and gamble with!

Nice review! Owned my 2017 FZ-07 from March to August of last year and put a little over 3k miles on it. Agree with all your points - and I'll reiterate that the seat was awful! Riding for half a day up I-5 through the central valley made my butt and leg muscles scream (I'm 5'10"). Getting a taller custom seat helped, and then swapping it out for a bigger bike (XSR900) helped too. If you happen to be between this vs. some of the others in its class (Ninja 650, etc.) this motor is 100% worth it, because the crossplane crankshaft gives it character and an exhaust note that is unmatched (except for maybe say a Monster, for more money) Love my XSR's power, but I miss that FZ-07 growl :/ Thanks for all your BSOS vids - they helped me get the most out of my FZ-07 while I had it!

I have had my fz07 for a year and 4 months. After 10,600 miles on the clock it is rock solid. +1 on the rear seat it is so loose from the factory. You can turn this bike into whatever you want with the bars. Solid. Cheap. Don't regret getting mine. Will be handed down as the girlfriends first bike.

Awesome video Jake. I own one as well. I have also owned sport bikes and find this FZ a blast around town. Miss the top end on the freeway though. The FZ is also not as hot to sit on in traffic as a 4 cylinder super sport. Also I bought a Gilles tooling dash relocation bracket from TST. Took a while to come in from overseas but puts the dash in front of the bars where it should be.

Jake TheGardenSnake I put a Traxton Dynamics fork spring kit on my FZ and it improved the bike hadeling tremendously. Food for thought just based on how many times your front end comes crashing down from those wheelies you love so much. Thanks for the tip on the duct tape for the passenger seat...I've been fucking with that for 3 years now.

ON your last point, I absolutely agree. Ive had both expensive and mid range cars, and universally the mid range cars left a better impression in the long term. Not worrying about getting dinged in the parking garage or hauling ass over pot holes or how much its gonna cost to replace this or that is a blessing. I got a supermoto right now and I beat the hell out of that thing with no regrets. If I had grabbed the R6 i was planning on, I think I would have been so much more conservative on the road that it would have kept me from really enjoying the bike to its full potential.

I took mine on a 1000 mile road trip last summer and it was great! Fuel tank size didn’t bother me too much because we always fill up often since alot of petrol/gas stations are shut up North pf Scotland. Only down side to me with it was the seat. "If you've got some control, you absolutely can buy this bike and use it as a beginner." Yep... that's what I did. The first time in my life I ever sat on a motorcycle is when I was taking delivery of my brand-new FZ-07 from the dealer. Rode it home with my learner's permit, and then got my license two weeks later. At the end of the 6-month riding season, Miku has just about 1700 mi on her. I keep anxiously waiting a long enough thaw to bring her out again... :D

Fz10 feels the same on tank size best I got was 148 miles was all interstate cruise set at 88Mph middle of night never had to slow down, though worst was 62 with either WOT or heavy braking. Can’t really have fun on back roads on the 10, if it was not for the frequent 300 mile trips I would of got the 9. Little more sport not as much weight. Tested a 7 left me wanting more. Great vid

I still love my FZ07. One thing i like, not having to choke it to start it. Its been setting all winter, I started it right up a few days ago. No problems. My other bike, the battery is dead and i have to choke it to get it to start. VTX 1300r Big Monster. But needs to be on a battery tender all the time. If i started out on a FZ07, i would be dead. My FZ07 can go around 150 miles on a full tank. My 1300 Honda can only go 100 miles on a tank of gas, and i has a bigger tank. The FZ07 has around a 3 gallon tank, and my 1300 Honda has a 4 gallon tank. So the FZ07 does pretty good for having a small gas tank.

Hey Jake, I'm in the DFW area and I've been watching your vids on and off for a few years and finally decided to pull the trigger on getting out and riding myself. I picked up a grom a few weeks ago just because they're dirt cheap and my friend also agreed to get one with me so we've been just goofing around on back roads (doing what the grom does best) and I am going to start looking into getting a second motorcycle because honestly I would just like something that I can take on the highway around here and the grom seems like a deathtrap considering the fastest I can get mine to is 65mph, and I was wondering if you'd recommend this as a good second bike to get into? I know the power is a big jump from a grom but I've been riding my family's CRF450 for a few years and I'm used to popping a wheelie just by giving the bike a little throttle, so I'm not too intimidated. I think I'm kinda rambling but basically, I want a second bike to be able to ride anywhere around the DFW area, I didn't know if something like an MT07 or a GSXR would be better. TL:DR I'm a braindead grom owner in Dallas who wants to go zoom zoom on the highway and not feel like I'm gonna die, do you recommend this bike or something else? Thanks dad.

So I just decided on the z650 over the fz 07 a few weeks ago pretty almost completely based on ergonomics and comfort. You said the motor on the fz 07 was the best in its class and I was wondering why that is and what are some things that I could consider improving about the kawasaki ptwin?

I think they are a great all round bike. I have had the chance to ride 07, 09 ,10 and the 07 tracer. The 07 and 09 I think are just more fun. The FZ/MT10 is a rocket, the 07 was so much fun on a lot of levels without that I'm on a rocket feeling. Great review, I've been tempted for so long to down size and could easily live with the FZ/MT-07. Cheers

Hey Jake, I just found your channel. I’ve heard of you before through other Moto bloggers but just recently I’ve gotten interested in learning to ride. I’m 20yrs old with no experience. 200/205 lbs 5’7” I mean I’ve rode small dirt bikes and scooters and have driven manual trans cars (heard that helps with the concept of shifting and applying throttle). I am coordinated and a good driver. Have had BMWs current car new 19’ VW GLI. Anyways I’ve been back and forth on (R3/Ninja300/CBR300) to dual sport/adventure bikes like BMW F650/G650, then...I became interested in Ducati Monster 696s. I just want something lightweight, easy to ride and could be a beginners bike? I found the Yamaha FZ/MT-07... I LOVE THE SOUND OF THE CROSSPLANE. It sounds so tough like the R1. So I’m planning to take a DOT motorcycle beginners class in August or September and then take the 2nd one too. Hopefully I can save up $2500-$3000 by late fall and during the winter get myself a FZ07. Are there any tips or advice you can give me? Is the FZ07 okay for someone like me? I know there are beginners who have no coordination don’t know what they’re getting into, beginners who’ve grown up riding dirt bikes (I’m in WV) and people like me who are interested in but a little leary of what to do and don’t know where to start. Does an FZ07 power up easily??? I was never the kid who did wheelies on his bicycle. I’m just looking for any tips whether it’s advice for riding in general to what years or things to look for when buying a FZ07 (If you think I could realistically start there) Thanks a lot, will continue watching your FZ07 vids

Great review Jake. The problem with the FZ07 at high speeds is that of course it isn't really designed to do that transmission wise etc, but the main thing that people don't consider but is a massive factor is that there is no aerodynamics, no fairing, no downforce. This is one of the main reasons that it feels unplanted post 100mph, it feels that way because it IS unplanted. As long as you are going straight on a reasonably decent road you can go to 115 with ease, but not much more, depending on the bike and mods, but honestly, this bike is a monster at legal speeds and up to 100 mph. Almost any naked bike is going to feel like shit post 100 MPH even if the motor and tranny can do it better. You are on two wheels, you need a fairing. You need air effects to go to the mid to high 100's and be safe and stable doing it. I agree that the suspension is adequate. It is not a 5K suspension, but I live in California and I have had no problem in a wide variety of smooth/rough fast/slow, straight curvy. I am very athletic when I ride. I don't just sit on top and expect the bike to do everything for me. This is not a flying lazy boy and I expect most sports bike riders, realize you need to post a bit (put weight on the pegs, raise your lazy ass) when you are roughing it or going thru twisties. Also I disagree that you need to do a muffler mod on this bike. The stock is well designed and will serve you well. What sounds good in the garage becomes annoying at highway speeds or at 4 a.m. in the morning. I don't need my bike to sound powerful, I just need it to BE powerful. But ur right, if you mod it you need to tune it. But I get it. No hate, just saying guys, you don't need to do that. I did not and I am glad every day that I did not and I have the no speeding tickets to prove it. I agree that it could be a smidge bigger and I'm only 5'8" just a wee bit longer so I don't feel bunched up when I decide to lean in and hug the tank and do some more aggressive postured riding. But the seat does allow for you to put yourself back or forward as needed and elbows can bend, so it works. I do feel just slightly bunched up tho and if it was made custom for me, it would be about 2 inches longer of a wheelbase. Databyter

Databyter there is no reason to be doing over 100 mph on your way to work......

@@sleeper.simulant7327 I wouldn't say there was NO reason to be doing over 100 mph on your way to work, but it is definitely not required. I MOSTLY ride commuting and I do occasionally hit 3 digits. Most of the time it is just for a few seconds to break out. I am not cruising at 100 mph, weaving in and out of traffic. Most of the time I am going about 35 mph splitting traffic which is legal in my State. Not sure what your point was, but in principle I agree with you. It is not necessary, it increases risk, and many people that do this, also tend to do other risky things as well which overall increases the chances of an accident. I don't know what it is about my comment that had you focussing on THIS point, but I replied honestly, that yes, sometimes I do hit three digits in unique situations, but that does not define my commute or my riding style. In fact I am super focused on safety and preach it daily. I never daydream when I am riding, I am ALWAYS looking for ways to reduce risk, mostly risk associated with other cars. I am willing to take the risk of going a bit faster at times, situations and conditions permitting, provided that I CAN do it safely. And again, with a bike, you can be cruising at 70, shoot to three digits, and back down to 70, literally within a few seconds. It might be to AVOID a risk. Most cagers associate driving 100 mph as prolonged dangerous speeding. On a bike It can be a momentary spurt to avoid a growing problem several lanes away, and half a mile down the road. Just sayin. Databyter.

Databyter I personally hate super sports for commuting. They are cramped and uncomfortable, and tend to get poor fuel economy. These naked bikes are excellent commuter bikes because they get decent fuel economy, have plenty of get up and go, go fast enough, and have a far more comfortable seating position. I commuted on a older vfr750 and I personally found that to be fairly comfortable as well, sport touring class bike. It’s also heavier with fairings so it’s far more stable at speed. Fuel economy wasn’t great (thirsty v4) but 45-50 MPG’s isn’t terrible either.

@@sleeper.simulant7327 I agree 100%. I am glad I did research, including sitting on many bikes, before I made a bad mistake and bought a cruiser or supersport. My naked sports bike, is the best of both worlds, not an ass up super sport, not a legs straight out in front lazy boy chair on wheels. My FZ is more like a dirt bike posture but designed for the street. Quiet, fast, nimble, and great mpg.
