GA4 Ecommerce Tracking: Complete GA4 Setup Tutorial for WooCommerce

@@rooted-digital Yes the download worked for me via the GTM4WP blog post, and it is recording the ecommerce data such as viewed items and items added to cart, however I noticed the items purchased column in GA4 is not recording the placed orders in WC? Not sure why though but I've followed the exact steps as provided. Thank you.

Hey there, that's a bummer about DebugView. It can be funky for me as well and doesn't seem to always work as it should. First step would be the most obvious, which I'm sure you've done: make sure you are indeed working in the same GA4 property that is connected to GTM. Thanks for sharing, its so useful! One question, I do see these firing in my GA4. However, I have an question, I was wondering how come these values are not reflected in datastudio? Add to cart, transactions and total revenue are weirdly zero.

That is very odd. Are the values showing up correctly in GA4 but just not showing up in Looker Studio / Data Studio? If so, you could try refreshing the GA4 connection with Looker. I think there might have been some changes to GTM since the video. There's no longer a Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration tag type anymore and the json file format is invalid and can't be imported.

Hi there. You are right on both fronts. Regarding the GA4 Config tag, this is now called the "Google Tag" in GTM. If you had already created a Configuration Tag for GA4, Google Tag Manager automatically migrated it to the Google Tag. If you are starting from scratch, the Google Tag will perform the same function as the GA4 Config Tag did. Regarding the json file format, I really have no idea what happened. It seems as though it's still working for some people but obviously not for others. I am hoping to get in touch with the publisher of GTM4WP but haven't had any success yet. Thanks for letting me know and I'm sorry this is more of a challenge than it would have been otherwise.

Try using the new Google tag template in GTM and treating it the same way as the old GA4 Configuration tag by using your GA4 Measurement ID as the Google tag ID. This was an update from Google Tag Manager in September. Here's a Google resource: support.google.com/tagmanager/answer/9442095?hl=en

I just checked this and I see the exact same thing you're saying. This is weird, because it used to just download the JSON template. I might send a message to GTM4WP to see if they can change it back. In the interim, I saw a comment where someone suggested using Notepad ++ (notepad-plus-plus.org/) to paste the script and then save it as a JSON file to upload to Tag Manager. I have not yet tried this myself. So if you do, I'd be grateful if you could share if it works for you. Sorry for the extra steps here. Hopefully GTM4WP makes this simpler again in the future. This is awesome, I was able to view the tags and information fired in debug and even live view, but for some reason in the reporting tabs in ga4 and the profits and other ecomm events I still dont get any info, any ideas why this is happening?

I'm glad you found it (mostly) helpful. That View item event is certainly frustrating though. Is it only that one specific event that fires twice or all of them? You could check to make sure GTM is only installed once. And I'd double check the trigger in preview and debug mode.

Hello, Unfortunately many changes have been made since you made this video. I followed the steps as colesely as possible but unfortunately is not working. For exemple the Google Analytics Configuration Tag is no longer available. I used Google Tag, I imported the file, I configured the tag and the Plugin on the website, I published everything but the GA4 Events are not fired in the preview mode, neither appear in the Google Analytics. Hi there. You were right to use the Google tag template. This is a replacement for the old GA4 configuration tag as you've rightly determined. In terms of why the GA4 events are not firing, I'm not sure. I do know that GTM4WP (the plugin you've used) has a new support article. It says "file format is invalid." and "containerVersion.tag[0].vendorTemplate.parameter.measurementIdOverride: The value must not be empty." Any ideas or updates to this process now? Hi there. Yes, Google did make this update (on 9/5/23, I believe) when the "Google Tag" replaced the GA4 Configuration Tag as the way to deploy GA4 through GTM. Short answer: you put the same value (the Measurement ID from your GA4 data stream) into the field you're referring to.

Hello there. Are you still having the same issue? If you look at the JSON, you should see the purchase event included in the Regex list of events to track. You can see this below, at the very end. I can keep my eyes and ears open, but can't think of a good reason why this would not be working. Sorry I can't add any more help. I am not certain if it is due to a recent change to Google Tag Manager or something else (see #3 below). 2.) They propose a workaround. Great video, everything work but not for all events. In particular it these are the events that I cna find in debug: view_item, view_item_list, select_item, add_to_cart, remove_from_cart, view_cart, add_payment_info, add_shipping_info ------ For these others events: begin_checkout, purchase I can see other names like: gtm4wp.orderCompletedEEC AND gtm4wp.checkoutStepEEC without the corrispetive event names. Is there anything I can check?

I can't say for sure but here are some things to look at. - It might be that you have accidentally added the same Google Tag Manager container twice. - It's weird that you can't see anything in GA4 Debug view. I'd double check to make sure GTM preview and debug mode is open (to send debug signal) and I'd also double check your container permissions in GTM just to be safe. - It might be related to the tag’s triggers. Check how many times it is being fired in GTM preview and debug mode. - It couldn't some issues in the implementation and due to some bug, the code activates the same dataLayer.push code multiple times. I have a question. Here is what is not fully explained for this novice. At around 4 minutes you explain that one can download the Json file that will build out the triggers. What is not explained is are these "triggers" germane to the plugin GTM4WP, or are these triggers generic woocommerce where this json will match up whether a site uses GTM4wp or not? Say for instance they use WooCommerce Google Analytics Integration or some other method of adding the tag to the website.

I met him because he knows a lot more about EComm specific implementations than me.
