I really don't like talking about this cos 99.9% of people view aging in a negative light. I am 51 and have now had three amateur fights. My record is 2-1. I had my first fight at 46. I may be fighting again in February 2023 if all goes well. I train twice a week and do weight training on the other days. I totally agree with you that it all comes down to how you treat your body. Enough said !!!

Serious respect man. Seeing older cats doing it was made me think "what is keeping me from doing martial arts again" because age isn't it. Even if i dont end up competing again it has very apparent physical and psychological benefits.

Hey Gabriel, thanks for the words of encouragement. As a 32 year old who's been involved in boxing and Muay Thai for the last few years, there are times when my body let's me know that I need to take my recovery more seriously, and it has worried me at times. But your attitude and ability to set an example of human potential when it comes to exceeding expectations as an athlete who isn't in their 20's anymore, helps me keep my eyes on the prize, and not be held back by the Placebo of age-related limitations. I eat healthy and train at Least 3 times a week, and I think I still have a Lot more in the tank for my athleticism. Anyway, this video (along with other age-related honest talks) has really helped to keep me from feeling discouraged. Good luck in your fight! Show that kid how much experience is worth, in the ring And in life 🔥

@@hannibalwantsahuggrande3433 I know... but being around mostly early 20 somethings, and having to take a day off here and there to recoup things like my back or my knee (after old injuries), makes me feel like 32 is starting to matter lol. Definitely good to hear it from a pro who puts their body through way more than I probably do

I am 52 and still actively training in TKD and Muay Thai concurrently, together with mostly younger folks, many even have parents younger than me. I am in-line with their cardio for the most part, and not many knows my age (and I look younger than my age). Any time I overheard similar conversations, I just chuckle... I probably would have thought like them in my 20s or even 30s.

Fellow '85er here, and it still surprises me how well I can keep up athletically with the competitive fighters at my gym despite the age gap (I think the oldest of them is 32) and despite only having gotten into fitness when I was 29 or 30 after years of disability. Still working on reducing the skill gap, but I can't deny that I get a little pleasure from outlasting their gas tanks at times 🙂

Gabriel is such a modest and friendly guy, for the opponent to irk him and to hear the phrase "...the kind of pain I can bring to him" out of his mouth got me super fired up. There's other top guys I watch in other fields unrelated to combat sports who are for sure top-tier at what they do, but they're just having fun messing around and easily winning. It's when someone actually disrespects them that they get serious that they really pull out all the tricks and techniques, I'm very excited to see Gabriel get serious and pull out his full skillset on an opponent.

Individual factors are definitely at play, time in the sport, damage taken etc. Light weight classes seem to favour youth, speed and endurance. Respectfully, you've taken a step back in your competition with karate combat, and that's allowing you to still compete at a high level and look great, but your time in Bellator and other organizations have sharpened you more than the athletes you're competing against. Enjoy the days Gabriel, you'll know when it's your time, and only you can decide that.

I competed for a police job when I was 37 yo. I outran everybody except from a friend from the academy which was active military so he was in peak fitness level. I started training after years of very inconsistent training. If I could pull that out in younger guys in their 20’s, you will do way more than that. You are very consistent, take care of your diet and health and are in excellent shape. If this guy comes in hoping age difference will do him much in his favor, he will have a very shocking wake up call to reality 😅

I think the benefit of being older is that you strip away the bullshit and distill the training and technique down to only the things that work. And by doing this you as a fighter are more confident and more focused. A younger fighter may be thinking "In this camp I tried this XYZ. I wonder if it will help". Where as an older fighter is doing a camp he knows works and he knows he's ready. Same with fight strategy

There are two things i'd like to add, that improve with age: experience, and being wiser. I treat them separately and here is why Experience- obviously as an older fighter one has more time to hone his techniques, making them more and more effortless. But we all know that Being wiser is more important and more interesting to me, when on this topic. In my country there is a very high level BJJ master, who is nicknamed "Uncle"(i don't know his real name, i do not practice BJJ myself, but many of my friends and my self defense trainers do)- he started to learn Brazilian Jujitsu at age 41... and in my uninformed opinion that is why he reached that level of proficiency that he did- he was thrown to hungry, ferocious, young wolves who think only about proving themselves, who have a bit of an ego(or rather a lot of an ego), who want to be the best and win medals. And he had to learn and survive among them, while avoiding having to muscle through- instead his technique had to be perfect and effortless, while at the same time not having a drive to be the best for others but rather be best for himself, discovering wealth of techniques and submissions and having fun playing with them. All fighters have an ego and want to win- it feels good to be best, to best another guy- but wisdom is when we learn that it doesn't matter, if i lose in this moment, or that i might have to tap out to avoid injury, go back and train harder and improve where i am lacking, so i can win next time. Those are the people who look far ahead, at least much father than a shiny bit of metal on a sash that they can win in few minutes. And people who want to learn and best themselves, rather than best somebody else- are actually, at least in my scant experience, way more dangerous, than gun ho killers, who want to be first and beat everybody up. And they are dangerous for much longer Other even more obvious things i might spat here, like composure- i will not even touch. This comment didn't bring up anything new anyway :)

Love the background rain and storm. I never understood how people think of rain and stormy weather as bad.

Father time in undefeated. I have found as I got older the biggest problem was recovery. As you gt older you can no longer workout 2 days in a row and 6 days a week. If you can not put the time in practicing and working out, your performance will start to go the wrong direction.
