GOT was published in '96 and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in '97. So really Hairy P is a toned-down version of the Wall in GOT, if Hairy and friends had balls, swords and freezing cold misery: Hairy P: "I've got a cool scar on my forehead!" Jon Snow: "My face was slashed by the talons of a hunting eagle possessed by the soul of a warg..." Hairy: "But, but... some of my scars are invisible, my parents died!" Jon: "Seriously??" lifts shirt, revealing dozens of hideous stab wounds Hairy runs away crying....

The inclusion of singers, and their impact on the morale of soldiers, is such an awesome addition. It really makes the world feel more alive. I can't overstate the importance of the few guys who were prone to bouts of song when I was in the Army. Even if they sounded like shitty piss.

Remember in Harry Potter when Harry, Ron and Hermione went up to Malfoy as he slept and threatened him to stop making fun of Neville, using scabbers to intimidate him. It turns out Malfoy was right to be scarred of Scabbers as we know is Peter Pettigrew, who's not against killing children as we see when he fucks up Robert Pattinsons win at the tri wizard tournament. We see the similarity in scabbers and ghost as they both murder people and are pets to the protagonist.

He's now doing Harry Potter analogies... which makes perfect sense since by the time the first Harry Potter book was out George was already close to releasing A Clash of Kings. Meaning these comparisons are paradoxical.

I think the night's watch is also used as a political tool. You can remove people from power without starting a blood feud. Ned Stark was supposed to be sent to the wall. The war of the five kings would of been avoided if he was sent to the wall rather then killed. So it is a bit of a waste but does serve a purpose of an institution

Gonna disagree with your take on the nights watch, while they are mixed bag of people morally they are clearly shown to way more important than anyone gives them credit for. And even though the wildlings are really people just trying to survive, the fact that they semi regularly form armies and raiding parties kinda justifies what the watch have to do on a daily basis.

I don't get why Randyll didn't let Sam become a maester. That also would have taken him out of the line of succession and would have fit Sam's talents much better. I don't remember anywhere in the books saying that Randyll is anti-maester. Maybe it's meant to be implied.
