Guys, you don't understand. I've been on gamefaqs since I was 12 years old. Since 2005. And in all this time I can say that it's userbase hasn't really changed, because anyone with any vague knowledge of gamefaqs will tell you that it's a rabidly salty place. But BEING there, on the boards, while the BGE was happening? It was fucking nuts. Dudes were shitting themselves in fury. Going "I hope anyone that votes for Undertale dies". Like, I enjoy a good shitpost, believe you me, but these folks were sincere. They took it as a personal affront that Undertale was (rightfully) winning these polls. All in all, it was pretty hilarious. Nerds get really asshurt when their outdated games lose. :T

The funniest thing about that whole poll was 1.Normally people on GFAQs get super pissy that the same people win the same contests over and over 2.There were accusations of people using bots to inflate Undertale's ratings when actually the bots were being used to inflate all the other game's ratings!

+Unsagi The mods did an investigation into the claims and amusingly found the truth was the opposite of what was being claimed, just like FEfan56 noted. It was the other games that had bots upvoting them. Undertale actually had the highest percentage of unique votes as well, not just people voting multiple times by getting around the system.

fun fact: I'm not huge into Undertale or anything but when this was happening I was laughing so hard at the bitter kiddies. I actually got hatemail at tumblr calling me a toxic part of the fandom because sure I am because no one can recognize they were being ridiculous unless they were an Undertale fanboy. Maybe times have just changed but I was on Gamefaqs back in 2005/06 and I don't recall it being this insufferable. It was fun seeing Undertale win. Pretty refreshing considering the "best game ever" is always one of 5 or so games any time the subject is brought up.

The idea that the best video games are only the original ones made decades ago is just pricelessly stupid. If you actually judged them on actual standards of gameplay and music and controls (waiving graphics, since that wouldn't exactly be a fair comparison), most of those old games turn out to be pretty bad in comparison with the more polished games that have been made since. Which makes sense, as bad traits of games would be ironed out over time and the general quality should be improving. In short, the original Pokemon is a pretty bad game.

Silverizael To be fair, there are plenty of old school games that still hold up immensely well. Some of my favorite games (Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Ristar, etc) are over two decades old. It's true though that most don't hold up as well. I loved Mario 64 as a kid and it was a genius introduction to the 3D platforming genre... but it's been bested by so many other 3D platformers since that calling it "the best game ever" is a bit ridiculous.

Super Mario world and Pokemon Red/Blue are both very old games which means they are pretty meh compared to the games that Nintendo made recently and a great chunk of people are too young to have played them in their early childhood and feel nostalgia towards them. I actually agree with the comment about a 3-month-old game though... Anyone remember The Artist? 2011 film, nominated for 10 academy awards, won 5, including best picture? Of course you don't. No one remembers The Artist and no one cares. This is partly because the Academy's demographic is not a general demographic, but it's also because awards are inherently tied to a moment in time. It is totally appropriate (and in fact I feel most appropriate) to have a "Best game of year X" in very close proximity to year X, because games are made specifically for their audiences and can hit a cultural nerve for people living in that time. For an award called "best X _ever_", even if it's held every year, I do think it's stupid for any game less than 12 months old to be eligible; in fact if you wanted to get serious about it I would make it 5 years to make sure it holds up on an "ever" basis and not just in the current console generation. But 1 year is an absolute minimum. This has nothing to do with Undertale, and if it won next year when it actually should be eligible because any existing hype would have died down, then good for Undertale. That comment just seemed way more reasonable than the other crazy stuff read aloud in the vid.

I have a GameFAQs account, had it for around 3, maybe 4 years...And yeah, this is pretty accurate. Honestly, if there are any CIVIL gaming forums out there, please tell me. I'm only on GameFAQs to discuss games, and the format for its boards is nice enough for discussing each individual game, but my god 85% of people I've seen there are horrible irrational mindless barely human beings (I will not deny there are in fact some good people there though, there truly are).Ugh, what really gets me mad with irrational Undertale hate is when anyone says it's an "SJW" or "furry" game. Now I'm not a fan of either of those things, but calling Undertale that? And people being uninformed enough to believe it? So annoying!So yeah, as a Gamefaqs regular, this video does not offend me at all. Gave me a good laugh and memories of the contest board.Memories.

i hope it's okay on yt to post personal opinions, but like ... i'm not sure how to feel about all of this. about undertale winning and the other games, which are usually regarded as 'the best of the best' losing. while i do love undertale ( mainly because of the characters and just how stupidly quirky it is ), and it's a refreshing thing to see that it has won the game of the year for gamefaqs and stuff... well, i dunno. i feel like the game's a bit too overhyped, and this is coming from somebody who loves the game. while i feel like gamefaqs should have another game that won, that was different than the usual winners of the last couple of years, that people are overreacting over a friggin /voting contest/ on both sides is really... ridiculous? i guess? it's not like voting for undertale to win was "OMG THIS'LL BE THE END OF THE WORLD IF PEOPLE DON"T VOTE", and this is the same for the other side. not sure if i'm overreacting, but i wanted to get my feelings across about it. oh, and the video was really funny. good job, sheshells!
