I bought the Neo•Geo Gold System (2 controllers + Baseball Stars Professional) for $550 at launch in the US in December 1990. In was 18 at the time and I worked my butt off to save up for it! I worked at Service Merchandise in the warehouse, as well as working a snow removal business with my brother. We had 20+ customers and got $20 + tips for each driveway every time it snowed, and luckily 1990 was a very snowy season in upstate New York! :) I used to get a new AES cart every couple of weeks. Back before the carts launched in retailers such as Babbage's and Electronic Boutique, AES games were priced depending on the MEG size. With League Bowling (22 megabits) costing "only" $129, and the higher games costing $170. When SNK started selling at those other retailers, everything became a $199.99 baseline MSRP. To be a video game addicted teenager, living rent free, with disposable income was a great time. :)

Such an awesome game - thanks for featuring it! My greatest arcade feat growing up was finishing this game on one credit. I’ve played it since and realised that the game I played as a child was set to 3 energy bars per life, instead of the default (2). But it’s still on my bucket list to finish it again as an adult!! Also, I can’t believe how awesome the music is - even to this day

I never saw this in any of the arcades I went to. That's what was so cool about those days. Some arcades had huge screens for the newest fighting games and others had tons of classics. You really had to go an hour or more out of your way some times to find them. It added a bit of adventure to the whole process of getting your game on.

My parents got me the neogeo (used) in 1992 with magician lord, super baseball 2020 and 8man. I was sooo happy. I never bought any games for it, just went to gamestores for game exchange (only like 8$ a swap at the time) so i got to experience a lot of the library

I tried this game a few years ago and it really put me in my place. You have to memorise enemy placements and patterns, it can be cheap at times too. It would be an awesome game if it wasn't for that.

The bosses are way easier in MVS mode as the damage you inflict gets carried over after you die. This is hard mode.

It's like Alpha saw how hard Castlevania & Ghouls N' Ghosts are and were all like, "Hold my beer, y'see those medusa head that move in a wavy pattern, lets have something like those but also shoot projectiles at you!" Was just watching SNESdrunk talking about old properties which could benefit form a remake/re-imagining, this could totally work as a "rogue-like" or even a "metroidvania" like.

Played this one when it was new on the NEO GEO home system, and it is maybe the most difficult game I have ever played that I at the same time wanted to complete. At the end there is a boss rush. Managed to complete it the same evening I had to hand it over to the other guy I co-bought it with (expensive stuff) so that he could get his allocated time with it. Took me several days to complete.

Had the choice of a Geo or snes back then, took the snes and a few extra games because I felt bad my mother was willing to spend that much on me. Now I have a big red and huge library. Probably could have bought one back in the 90s with all the quarters I fed them. Beyond all the fighters that I could beat with a single quarter, most of the library just kicked my ass with high octane action. Always saved two quarters to drop in Double Dragon and Heavy Barrel so I could play through them, but I could put in $3 to $5 easy into a big red to play a buck each game. Leave me with $5 bucks at a big red and I'd be good for 1 maybe 2 hours.

I owned a Neo-Geo and this game when I was 19~20. This game, and Ninja Gaiden (NES) were some of the hardest games I ever actually beat. At 2 1/2 times the age now, I'm happy just to get past the 4th or 5th level. (they got to the 6th level, there is a 7th level, then basically a mini-boss rush + final boss to go yet) I wish they had made more side scrollers instead of a bazillion fighters.

Before even starting to watch the video, I have to say, that the game was something like a Holy Grail to me back at the day. Saw the pictures of it in magazines and it looked jaw dropping awesome! MVS Magician Lord has a double jump! I've tried the control combo and it works, just kind of hard to pull off at first. Not sure if it also works on the AES version.

That was SNK's thing, they were not concerned with challenging the player's skill, they intentionally made their games almost next to impossible in order to get as much money out of players as possible, for the arcade operator's benefit. Beast Buster is a very good example, it's literally impossible to 1CC that game.

I actually did own this for the PS2, on the Neo-Geo collection. It didn’t age too well. The graphics being unimpressive was forgivable, given its original release date. But the control, high difficulty and gameplay colluded to make the overall experience waaay more frustrating than fun. I was so disappointed as I had fond memories of this “quarter muncher” from my JHS days.
