@AvennGed19 жыл бұрын
Of course I can walk for hours, its not difficult. Besides even if I couldn't its still a game, I can pause it. It's not like spy kids that when I start the game I'm fucked until I beat it lol. Why you gotta be a Debby downer :'(

Personally, the whole "using our bodies to play a video game" thing sounds extremely appealing. As you get better and better at the game, you also get more and more fit, so it wouldn't be as much a video game tournament as a marathon. Also, we would FINALLY BE ABLE TO SPRINT FOR AS LONG AS WE WANT instead of having to wait for a little bar to fill up. Also imagine what horror games would be like!
@Grayfirre10 жыл бұрын
There's several problems with that though and I think a lot of it is within game design. Online games would complete isolate those that aren't at peak fitness. Levels would have to be designed around someone's respective running speed. Horror games would have to worry about giving you heart attacks. Imagine having to design gameplay and levels around an average person's stamina. It just seems like there are more negative's than positives.
@IndianaJoneFan2410 жыл бұрын
Grayfirre Exactly. That is why I would rather games stay like they are. A TV screen and a controller.
@MissPoipui10 жыл бұрын
Grayfirre how will you not be fit if the games need you to be physically active while playing each game
@Grayfirre10 жыл бұрын
♥-ポケモン セレナ-♥ Love love shine ~〈3 Sorry if this is a little long. First off, I'd like to clarify that I said peak fitness. Sure more gamers will be more fit, but it doesn't mean most people can compete with athletes. Again you'd have game developers trying to figure out average running speed, average stamina levels, how well people can play when tired, etc. Levels would become shorter, or smaller to make up for how much running people normally do in a game. Not everyone will want to play a game if it makes them sweaty, and the longer someone plays the worse they do, due to exhaustion. More importantly, your statement seems to imply that just because games want you to be fit, that everyone will become fit. I like playing games, but i do racquetball, martial arts, parkour, and am learning tricking. After I come home, i don't necessarily want to run around to play a game. Tons of people will just stop playing videogames, because it's tiring, exhausting, and requires more energy, especially after their long days of school, work, ect.
@DopexMojo10 жыл бұрын
Grayfirre Ima play devil's advocate here but then you have to worry about you know running into a wall or when fighting a boss accidentally beating the crap out of your friend. I mean when I picture getting into a video game I kinda picture sword art online or .hack don't move so you won't hurt yourself or anybody else. Also even if they did fix it with some kind of little sensor to sense when you are in danger all it would take is one glitch and some kid could be running into a construction zone and getting flattened.

That's a pretty outlandish standard. The way I see it, the very most he should have to do is pay for repairs over a new TV when his plasma breaks (assuming he even has one). I just rewatched this episode, and i thought of something. Matpat obviously hasn't seen or read Sword Art Online. That is the ultimate form of Immersion. Virtual Reality. I realise running around in front of your tv-screen in a mock-version of VR is silly, and alot of people don't want to do that, but what about immersing yourself in a game to the point where you control your avatar. Where physical abilities don't really affect in-game skill. And your real body doesn't have to be moving at all. What about controlling your avatar, as if you were controlling your own body, but not being limited by your own limitations. Your avatar might have endless stamina, or through the use of stats is twice as fast and ten times as strong as you are in real life. Isn't Virtual Reality as depicted in Sword Art Online the dream of every gamer?

I wouldn't mind either. We quickly run into a problem though... What about people with physical ailments? In Metroid Prime 3 motion controls were forced, so it became a nightmare for people bad with motion controls because they stuck to Metroid Prime 1/2 sticks and didn't care for the Wii. Sure they could learn, but you can't always run normally again once something happens to your legs... Companies would have to support "handicap" play via new servers, controllers, or simply push people aside... like they have done before since it costs more money then they would make. (How many are actually sick compared to people capable of playing but are lazy?)

I'd totally be willing to run in front of my TV to feel more like a soldier. And mat to the pat, you forget one thing, our endurance doesn't necessarily limit us that much. you can always make the player's movement exaggerated (although I'd love a game where if you weren't fit enough you'd get pwnd constantly) as well as have an option for a controller with all the basic movement mapped to buttons like we have now. Could solve obesity in America, also idk who would get PTSD from a game, no matter how realistic, because there is no actual loss. you can always reload or start another match. I'm sure SOME people would get it (Hell people claim PTSD from boot camp now a days!) but I'm assuming a majority would have no issue.

The OR is made like the Virtual Boy, but better. VB was uncomfortable, non-realistic and was really bad. The OR took it's idea and made it's own 3D super-realistic kind of look, which people think that "it's a new step to better technology." But the OR was meant to make you feel inside a game, but you're not actually in it and you don't feel anything. What I am talking about is something the OR cannot reach, something that can make you literally "inside" a game, and you can feel everything with all of your 5 senses (or if we have more). OR is meant to be a Virtual, not-inside-the-game technology, but what am I talking about is Virtual, inside-the-game technology.
@IskandarTheWack10 жыл бұрын
Virtual reality is putting a screen in front of your eyes and having your head rotate the view. What he's talking about is actually hooking up your body to the technology so that when your character experiences something, you experience it via faking your senses.

How about this? A gaming device that gives the body the impression that it's sleeping, putting it in sleep paralysis, which mutes the bodies movements. The device now puts an image directly into the brain of the game. The device reads brain signals, so when you try to move your body, it's muted in real life, but you can move in the game (like you can in real life). The device also sends the brain signals from all 21 senses, including taste, touch (including pain and temperature readings), smell, hearing, spacial orientation and, as already listed, sight. The game now loads a virtual reality that the player can experience like a lucid dream. This is what I would conciser the most real video games can get.
@TheSkyrimandyogscast10 жыл бұрын
I like this idea,but application is harder than the idea on paper (or in this case,on the cloud).
@roguej4710 жыл бұрын
cheatcodek That's true, but I'm talking about this for the future when we have a larger understanding of the brain. This is how real video games CAN get, not how real they are going to get in our lifetimes (unless there is a scientific breakthrough).

How would u get out though
@roguej4710 жыл бұрын
Loom Experts A simple thought could release you. When you first get out, your body will probably be stiff due to sleep paralysis, but that's temporary. Other than that, a person should be fine. Sense the machine would only be running a program in your head, there would be no helmet or anything needed, just a wire (or wireless brainwave transmitter and receiver). It would be completely safe.

I personally despise the push towards realism mainly because a lot of it comes at the expense of clever and creative art design, replacing it it with shades of "brown" and "more different brown". Like, compare how stylistcally varied mainstream gaming was in the 8/16-bit era to how it was now, and you'll see my point.
@tannerbarnes739210 жыл бұрын
What I want to know is: Will realism disappear as immersion increases? What if total immersion style video games become the new acid?
@darkstar798810 жыл бұрын
trans futurist He's saying that has games become more realistic; less people are worried about making them look good. Enough defense, though. For one; I'd like someone to actually name a game that only consists of "Brown" and "different brown" colour palette. Also; while Matpat might not like the idea of full immersion, i do. That's what i want out of gaming. To the point where if Sword Art Online (An anime) were real, i would wish to be in it. *Even* while knowing the risks.

Yea I miss the likes of Rare and creative design studios like that. It may just be nostalgia or growing up that makes me feel new games aren't as good, but I miss the days before mainstream ruined the community of tight knit gamers, and games were made to be fun, not just to get a big paycheck and to look "pretty". Pay-to-play ruined many games for me as well.

That's what I thought to but their might be some health concerns like what if theirs a power surge would your brain get fried, or could someone just come in your house and rob you blind or kill you while your taking your virtual Girl friend to the bonezone. and obviously there would have to be a time limiter because if you stay to long your body wont be getting its exercise and nutrients or like Mat said your might develop some mental trauma if things start to get a little too REAL.

it makes no engineering sense to transfer your conscience to a machine that would need a machine that is able to transfer it and another expensive one to hold it. this is stupid when you realize that every person on earth has a free machine that is able to run your conscience. plus as the brain work your memories of the events that happen when your conscience was not in your brain would not be remembered by your normal self. next post is the better alternative

@ShinigamiUzuki10 жыл бұрын
Christian Schulz Not only that, but if I /really/ wanted to exercise, trust me, I'd do it. But when I sit down to play video games, I don't want to have to be breaking out a sweat. I want to be able to sit down, relax, and kill a free hour or two, because most of the time when I'm playing games it's after a tiring day of work anyway. Last thing I would want is to be tiring myself out even /more/. It would be somewhat counterproductive. Not saying some people wouldn't enjoy it, but the developers would need to at least allow controller functions so that one group doesn't get left out and they lose out on half their buyers.

How far I personally want to go with immersion is to the point where I can be in a dream-like state playing the newest Battlefield title. I want to feel myself walking around and getting that kickback (but not pain please or just die it down a lot) from being shot in the face. Since I'm technically Lucid dreaming I don't necessarily have to physically move but more or less control it with my mind. Because I'm reading the series, what I'm kind of thinking about is like being Divergent in a simulation. I get injected with a serum, go into a game, and shoot up my friends in online. Of course it would be hard to link minds into a server where they all control themselves instead of me just fighting AIs but I feel we'll get there one day.

Surely, though, if games become too immersive, they lose the very thing that is the reason for their popularity: escapism. If a super-advanced, super-immersive game is indistiguishable from doing those same things in real life, would there be much value in gaming anymore?

What I'm afraid of is that video games will eventually get TOO realistic and create a false reality for those playing it. I mean think about it. What if video games get so realistic that you could actually physically experience everything that the character you're playing is? You could just immerse yourself in your favorite game and forget all about your real life, aside from the dull, pointless job you probably have to pay for your "alternate reality".

I get what you're saying. It's like that one Bruce Willis movie where almost everyone was hooked into a robot that they controlled through virtual reality. The robots could do things people could not do, and so, many people spent a lot of their times possessing their robots instead of improving themselves or their actual lives. To me, videogames should be an amusing distraction or form of temporary escapism not something that intrudes upon the actual game that comprises real life.
@IAmWolfBoy110 жыл бұрын
I argue for the side of Total Immersion. Sure, you'd be hooked into a machine half your life, but think about everything! There would be no war, we'd all be too busy riding Yoshis, and disiese couldn't spread, because we'd never have contact with one another. Except, of course, in the virtual world, where we'd be playing World of Warcraft, and other MMORPGs. Just consider the potential for a bit, and see if you still feel the same.

I think that this one was a bit more fluff than a theory, I was hoping to see groundbreaking technology and ideas that are breaching into virtual reality instead of being told about the history of the TV for it to really get to a Vsauce video I have already watched

Frankenstein is not the name of Frankenstein's Monster. The level of immersion will eventually get to the point that video games become one with reality (see the movie Gamer).

Actually, Frankenstein is the closest thing the monster has to a name. At one point, he likens himself to being the doctor's son, and what son doesn't take his father's name? So, while it's not exactly wrong to say the monster doesn't have a name, it's also not really wrong to call it Frankenstein, either.

Sara Miyamoto Victor Frankenstein was not a doctor in Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. He was a student majoring in science for college that had a teacher who somehow made him think he could create life.

There's a lot missing from here. TV's are also limited by color depth and framerate. XHD standards call for 12-bit color and 120 frames per second while current HD standards use 8-bit color at 60 frames per second. And VR/3D isn't perfect technology yet as games cannot simulate our eye's ability to converge on objects up close. 3D stuff loves to throw crap in front of you, but your eyes are still crossed and converged at the distance of the screen and not where it's supposed to be. For this to be solved, the game's cameras would have to read your mind to know what objects to converge on, but even then your eyes in real life might want to do the same, rendering 3D simulation from a 2D screen impossible for any games with objects that need to be interacted with up-close. Then there's the issue of control. The Wii Remote is fantastic for pointing and simulating motion in a living room or couch gaming environment, but it's not true VR. True VR and 1:1 gaming would not be very fun. That's just an exact replication of real life, and real life is very difficult to master without being very accessible. After all that, there's our other senses too. So far our sense of touch is rarely engaged with aside from vibration. Hot and cold, textures, and the sense of unobstructed midair would layer an unnecessary complexity to any simulation. In the end, what matters most is what's fun and engaging for games, and that's not necessarily VR or perfect replication of reality. People seem to enjoy playing Wii Sports Bowling without actually stepping forward to throw the ball, or smelling it. What's important for gaming is the ease of our interaction with it, and for that an age-old device has proved itself quite well with pro gamers: the mouse.

I wouldn't say the things you mentioned are 'missing' from the video, since he touched on the hard limits of human perception that we are currently encroaching on - and in my opinion, you're more touching on things that our current level of technology hasn't quite reached yet, and things that current VR/gaming/television technology simply haven't made a real effort to do yet. See: Talking about what we haven't developed in tech yet, versus the resolution of a screen being too high for us to effectively interpret.

Actually it uses 8-bits per channel, so it is 24-bit or 32-bit (when you take alpha or Z-channel into account) Rendering at higher than 24-bit makes sense, lots of games already do that (in floating point as opposed to integer values). But once that is done, you can safely "downconvert" to 24-bit without it making a perceivable difference. The GameCube and Wii even went as low as having 6 bits per channel, and while there were plenty of complaints of the Wii having jaggy or low resolution graphics, I never heard anyone complain about the lower colour depth.
@mariomguy10 жыл бұрын
Skittle Serval XHD is actually a new standard that calls for 120 frames per second, 48-bit color, and 8k resolutions. There are 4k televisions out now, and it won't be surprising to see these kinds of televisions being made within the next few years.
@mariomguy10 жыл бұрын
Phredreeke The new XHD standards call for 12 bits per pixel, or 48 total. The Wii could not display anything in 6 bits because the standard television, image, and graphics format was 8 bits per pixel, or 24 total, ever since full color was an adopted and accepted format. Color is not that important, but the human eye is capable of registering more values than what current televisions are capable of displaying today.
