Here's what I've learned in recent years: When Nintendo is involved, anything is possible. If Minecraft, Zelda and Sora can be in the same game, then Nintendo can make an Avengers-level film franchise. If a live-action Pokemon movie can earn $400+ at the box office, then more Nintendo films can work too. If they can sell literal cardboard cutouts for $80, then they can invent the perfect model for a CYOA movie.

One thing that should be point out with Dynamo Pictures is that they were originally founded by Nintendo and some other Studios for the purpose of making the CGI stuff for games (notably Metroid: Other M), so this might as well just be an easy purchase to have a studio that makes CGI Cutscenes and Trailers for their future games (since a lot of times, they have to outsource that right now).

The purchase agreement did say to purchase 100% of outstanding shares, meaning Nintendo already has a stake in the company. It was already partly owned by them. the other companies were willing to relinquesh their shares for whatever reason and Nintendo acquired it excepting Treasury Shares basically Nintendo owns it outright. Yeah they'll do the movies but more likely to also do all the CGI works, motion capture works and anything else needed.

Just a quick correction: the Witcher show is actually not following the video games but is actually using the books as source material. So it's not really a TV adaptation of a video game but more of a TV adaption of a book series.

I think the more likely explanation is that Nintendo bought a production company primarily for animated or interactive theme park attractions, since the Nintendo stuff in Universal Studios etc is really picking up

That and it allows them to branch out into other things. The studio they bought did make a gorgeous final fantasy movie. It looked like a video game cutscene but more quality like a movie. I'd say Nintendo would head this way while giving them a chance with true VR. Motion controls, a portable console, and now a company that specializes in interactive 3D programing. The pieces are all fitting in. Not to mention what they would do with their dabble in AR.

I was surprised how you just realized that since we all knew it would happen ever since the first Super Smash Bros. game came out and Subspace Embassy was released as part of Story Mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. To make a long story short, not only did I watch the Super Mario Bros. movie I love it so much that I want to watch it repeatedly just because of how much I enjoyed it. Now I just have to wait for the new Donkey Kong movie to come out and I would be super happy if they're going to make a Kirby movie. That being said, pretty sure Game Freak already made all the Pokemon movies to begin with. So maybe the next one after the new Donkey Kong movie, there would be a Kirby movie or better yet a Splatoon movie based off of the Splatoon comics.

They could also use this studio as a support team for their more animation heavy projects. Best example being the smash trailers that use either 2d or 3d animation for their reveal or xenoblade-ish projects. Maybe they could finally explain the random appearances of the final bosses of the Smash Bros games. They always were just kinda... there for me. Tabuu _literally_ shows up out of nowhere, and Galeem/Darkhon starts off the antagonist like its Golbez from FF4, only to have Darkhon show up later and it becomes a Tug-of-War, with VERY VERY little explained at all as to the why.

I went to the Super Nintendo World in USJ but it was really really fun. Like it was a fun interaction movie. I totally can feel like being in the Mario World then. So I think they also learned something from the Universal Studios too and gotten more comfortable making something related to movies.

I think they might take Augmented Reality to the next level with this. Or even yet, Nintendo VR could be a thing. The movie part of Dynamo Pictures is one thing. The motion tracking, live events, and everything else were the things that drew Nintendo to Dynamo. Look at it from the perspective instead of the movie perspective. Nintendo may once again change the way we look at video games.

I think I get where he's coming from. The power boots, to make Mario "JUMP" like in the game. The bombomb, a lot of little odd bits and pieces that, while amusing, might have gotten in the way of the story, to try to make it more like the game. The bits that still make me smile the most, are some of the bits furthest from the game mechanics... goombahs in the elevator anybody?

Nintendo might not know how to make movies, but they definitely know how to make great stories. Stuff like Splatoon, Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda, Nintendo has some of the best video game stories ever

Interestingly, you didn't mention the three Pikmin shorts that Miyamoto directed. It seems like that was partially to get his feet wet. He even talked about how it was different from making games, in retrospect he was not just doing a one off project but maybe trying to get knowledge about the craft.
