✅ Bowflex 552 Dumbbells - amzn.to/3NEm0wR
Bowflex 552 SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells review we take a deep dive into why they're so popular, why they're so cheap, and why I still recommend them despite their flaws.
There are many adjustable dumbbells to choose from including Powerblocks, NUOBELLS, and Ironmasters, but they all pale in comparison to the value offered from Bowflex. Do I think the 552's are for everyone? No, but for those on a budget, they work mighty well!

You keep saying "over time." I've owned mine for 16 years having bought it back in 2005. It's my main and only source of weight lifting, I use it 4 - 7 days a week and have had literally no issues and till today am so glad that I purchased it. It saves on over all price and space.

I have had these for several weeks kzbin.infoUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 and I have been really happy with them so far. I love being able to do a variety of workouts at home when I don't have time to make it to the gym. When paired with a basic bench, there are tons of different exercises and you can hit pretty much all major muscle groups. It is easy to adjust to your desired weight with the dials on each side. They slide in and out of the cradle smoothly. The only downside to this design vs the newer version, is that these are pretty wide. This does limit your range of motion with certain hand positions on certain exercises. Straight dumbbell press would be an example of this. I have to turn my hands slightly in order to bring them close enough together. Not a huge deal to me though. Really happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend.

I've had the 1090's for many years and they've worked great! Huge space saver/value for my garage gym. I've also been careful not to drop them, and as a result, they're still going strong through close to a decade of powerlifting accessory training.

I own the original MACH 1 set from over 17 years ago and they are still going strong, those round lockin pieces never wore down and I put plenty of use on them. Another bonus I should mention for anyone not sure if they should get them, Bowflex has the best customer service I have experienced. I loved my set so much I have recently replaced them with a newer version of the same exact set.

These were a real life saver for me during pandemic. One issue Coop didn't cover is that the ends aren't very comfortable when you're setting up for a press with them on your legs. They're not totally flat and aren't wide, so they kind of dig into you. They also don't feel great when you have them resting on your shoulders (for leg exercises) due to how the plates aren't uniform. All things you can get used to, so probably not a dealbreaker for most people.

I had the 552's for a few years, then upgraded to the 1090's, which I'm kinda surprised you didn't review instead, or at least mention in this review. I've had the 1090's for 9 years now. No breaks, no issues with the dials/function. Granted, you're limited, but I still get a good workout even if I have to go for high reps with various exercises. And really, 90 lbs. is more than most folks need. The handles would be better off straight instead of widening in the middle. And yes, they're long, but you get used to it. Granted, I sometimes wonder if I'd have been happier with the Powerblocks or Iron Master, but really the Bowflex DB's have held up better than I hoped. Recently i bought two of the 840 Kettlebells to mix things up and try something new. Any chance you'll review those? So far I like them. Overall fair review with this vid.

I’ve had these for close to two years now and don’t regret them. They actually went on sale pre-pandemic a few times and snagged them at $200 for the pair of 552’s which i think is an absolute bargain. I had to add a pair of loadable dumbbells for higher weights, which isn’t as convenient as the ease of use with the 552s. There was a time when I moved where the dumbbell got stuck in the holder but seems like there’s a video on how to solve that issue. All that said, with where I am now, if they were to break I would probably just go for a set of iron masters

I've had these for a very long time and mine are fine. I've always been careful not to drop them and I'm careful with them because they're plastic and it just stands to reason that you can't throw them around. They have a very small footprint even with the stand and I've really gotten my money's worth out of these. So, I have these and a rack full of 55-75 lb dumbells. The bowflex 552 set replaces a 5-50 rack of dumbbells for me.

@wickedALE13

@@Inzane8 As was mentioned in the video the rubber on the handle has gotten loose and does move a little. I have had my lock mechanism not release from the weights but a quick back and forth rotation on the weight select spinners got it working. Over all the dumbbells have held up to some decent use. I can tell the weights are a little more loose on the handle so I am sure the plastic parts are wearing down. I do mostly barbell movements and I have Olympic handles for the heavy movements like rows and presses but the 552 get used for biceps and shoulder accessory movements but before I had my barbell and plates I used nothing but these dumbbells and a pull up bar so they have gotten used pretty regularly.

I have a DIY idea for heavy incline and military press, use a pair of cable handles and luggage tie down straps, thread each strap through bumper plates of the required weight and a cable handle, adjust length of the strap for optimal starting position, you get an adjustable dumbbell you can drop all day long from overhead and also takes away the difficulty of setting up the dumbells.

Yeah I have had mine for 6+ years. I just bought individual steel dumbbells as I outgrew them for certain exercises. To get 5-52.5 for $250 (I got mine on sale) then only have to buy 60-100 in 5 or 10lb increments (I went with 10lb increments for now) saves so much money and space. I have quite a bit of space in my gym (900sqft) but I don't ever see me replacing these unless they break because 1. Taking up 6x the space for the same weights is dumb and 2. I don't ever plan on needing to drop a dumbbell that is 52.5lbs or less. 😂

I’ve been storing a family member‘s set for years with the fee being occasional use. He’s finally taking them back, so now I’m having to choose a replacement set. I use these mostly in the winter when the -30° temps and deadly roads keep me from driving to use the company gym at my workplace. They’ve totally held up, no damage to speak of. They’re definitely more awkward than a fixed set - the plates jiggle a little bit and are quite wide. That said, what you deal with in bulkiness is completely made up for in space savings. If you’re super limited on space, these rock. I’ll likely buy my own set.

I never comment on anything! But Coop, I went to Dick's Sporting Goods in summer 2018&missed the sale for the SelecTech552@$250 but still wanted them@the new regular price of $350, down from $400. After getting help to get them from the back, the shift manager noticed that I had he sale sign in hand and was just reading it. He says, "did they not take the sign down". (In my state, you pay the posted price!) I got them for $250, three days after the sale ended and would have got the stand but that wasn't in stock. I left Dick's with the 552's, a pair of mid-top UA kicks&some apparel for under $320 with taxes!!! That made my whole dang summer and looked the best&got the strongest I've ever been even over high school football days, some 20years later.!. The quickness of changing made supersets so smooth with less pausing to setUP overall and your other critiques are SPOT ON! I'll check out the metal replacement once my discs in between onve they start going too. The length was the hardest to adjust to but it taught me more about pronaded&supanated grips with dif exercises and my forearms&stabilizers thanked mE for it! Great review&I feel I've graduated to the SelecTech1090s!!! Maybe a review from you... ;)

I've had em for quite a few years They've held up. Bulky on certain moves. Kinda pain in ass overall. But better than nothing when you don't have a dumbbell rack.

I appreciate your review, really well done! I just ordered a pair and I am curious about what we're defining as "dropping". For example, I have large drop matts (they're about 4-5 inches thick" that I setup next to my weight bench when I do decline chest press with dumbbells. To avoid tweaking my shoulder, when I am done with a set I'll drop these on the matts, for a distance of a couple inches, and this is cushioned since the matts are designed to be springy. Is this still considered unsafe with these?

For $350 nothing is better. Never had a problem with them. I wouldn't call $350 cheap. Not sure what more you could ask for. I'm not a fan of Bowflex by any stretch, but these are solid. I know people that have had them for many years without any issues. The dial and the ergonomics are spot on!

I had mine for about 12 years. They hold up pretty well. I did break a cam when one of them got dropped down a flight of stairs. But bowflex sent me a pair of replacement handles for something like $40.

I found out Amazon has a more budget friendly version of these the famistar 5 level adjustable dumbbells. It goes up in like 10 lbs increments, but for $250 out the door it was quite a steal for an apartment gym without breaking the bank.

I have had the 1090s since 2007-09 (who can remember back then), and they have held up. Although I do not like the handle on the 1090s at all (fine up to 50lbs, but the edges cut into your hands over that weight-yes, there are edges), I would recommend them for the price. BTW, I have now upgraded to Iron Masters for the 10-120 option plus I can drop them.

I've owned these for 16 years without a problem. I use them heavily. The key is to NEVER DROP THEM, keep them clean, and for any ballistic type movements, use regular dumb bells.

I got one of these because it was $150 at my local Wal-Mart and I'm currently only training my left arm to bring it up to size with my right. Once I move on to full weight training with a bench and barbells I'll probably keep it for isolation exercises. No way I'd pay 300 a piece or more for other adjustable dumbells out there, no matter how nice. I'd build my own powerblock knockoff or my own design myself just for the fun of it.

You can get these exact dumbbells from brands such as "training camp", "Hercules", etc. They change out the name on the red strip. Mine have to be reset almost every time they get used, but on a budget, they work.

I had the 90s and the mechanism in the base cracked and I could no longer adjust the weight. Made the dumbbells useless at that point without buying a new base. Switched to powerblock dumbbells, best dumbbell ever.

I have the 552 and for the price and availability (at least near me because you can buy them in big box sport stores) they can’t be beat. As others have mentioned they are bulky even at low weight but not something I notice using them day to day. I also have the bench as well which I bought second hand. The bench will be replaced but when I need bigger dumbbells I will probably just buy a few fixed pairs as an add on.

I've had the 90lbs adjustable BowFlex dumbbells for ten years now. They're still holding up just like the day I bought them. They are WAY too wide and that's super annoying, but they've done the job.

Hi Benjamin i want to ask. Is 90lbs Bowflex, does mean same weight with 90lbs in real weight?
@mapultoid
@mapultoid 2 жыл бұрын
@@ahmadsugiarto4089 Yep, they go all the way up to 90lbs in real weight on each dumbbell. The trade off is that they are very wide to have enough weights to go that high.

For me, biggest issue would be the weight. As I train very heavy, the max weight is just enough for bicep curls or lateral raises. Do you have a recommendation for adjustable dumbbells which go really really have (up to 50kg)?

Just spitballing here, but I think for around the same price, or cheaper, you could buy two brand new loadable dumbbells and some plates from Walmart or secondhand. Or, more likely you do not need plates because you already have some. I would love to see some reviews of various loadable dumbbells!

I've had a pair of the first series for about 7-8 years. Still worked but the dials do wear out and are not smooth. Also, one of the plates' notch broke causing me to bend the metal that was under it to still lock in place. Needless to say, I sold mine for 200 bucks and bought 90lb Powerblocks.
