Best to always read the TDS on any primer before using them. Many of the urethane primers do not have high build. But some of them do. I prefer tamco urethane primer for high build. it sands easier than the polyester primers. Has almost the same build abilities and is great for overall priming on any project. Great information and thanks for posting.

Your videos are great! What would be the best primer for a truck topper where it has been sanded down to the fiberglass in a large portion of it due to extensive sun damage of the clear coat and paint.

Another great video. i couldn't find the link to that spray gun in your store. By the way, it is great to see your store and the items you use!

Good info. Thanks. My question (Yeah Im a DIY) My 97 Chevy 3500 paint is garbage. Not too much left and Im stuck with Chevy primer, metal and rust. Im getting a lot of conflicting reports on primer? I don't know which one to use. Self-etching, epoxy, urethane or polyester? No its not a show truck so it doesn't have to be perfect but close is good. I have a lot of real estate to cover here so sending it out for 8-10k to have it done cant be done.

If your not stripping it to bare metal there's no need for epoxy and self etching is only really for bare metal and adhesion. Stick with a direct to metal 2k urethane you can't go wrong. Hope this helps appreciate the comment and support!

When should we use a sealer and if needed, I have seen some just use reduced 2k primer as a sealer. What do you think?
@GarageNoise3 жыл бұрын
I use sealer on high metallic paint jobs or to create a uniform color for coverage. If I have a repair where I broke thru the primer I will also use sealer. I have a 2k primer (Roberlo me1) that is designed to be used as a sealer with an additive, I've never just refuced 2k primer to use as a sealer but I know some painters do. Good question, thanks for watching!

Hey Chris, this is a super helpful video on primers! 👊 I've got a question for you. I just laid a 2K urethane primer and blocked it out. But there's a spot or two where I sanded down into the filler that I'd like to cover. Is a lacquer primer, like Dupli-Color's Sandable Primer, safe to use with an acrylic urethane basecoat (PPG Omni).

If it's just a small spot you can get away with it. You may even be abl to use a sealer before you paint to take care of it.

Great video!I have a general question about primers!lets say you prepare a panel for painting and you are on the stage of primer.You lay the primer down,you sand it and is ready for base coat, BUT for whatever reason the car has to be used and complete the paint after one month.Is this ok,or I have to reprime it?how I handle such a situation??thank you very much!

You would need to evaluate it when it came back in but I would re- primer it. Primer is not made to be out in the elements .

Planning on fixing up some dents on my car roof (metallic paint), lots of them, but not very deep or big in diameter. What would you recommend?
@GarageNoise2 жыл бұрын
If the dents are shallow you may be able to just fill them and 2k primer check out some of my other videos to help with the process. You can use filler 1/4 inch thick. Appreciate the support!

Very confusing, I am going to paint over old paint, bondo, and some small metal spots. So far i have been spaying a rust killer primer with rattle can over the last three years,, as i restore other things. Now i want to go over the whole car.. I am lost. What covers everything and will build up?
@GarageNoise3 жыл бұрын
The small metal spot use self etching primer you can buy in an aerosol can. Spray the rest of the vehicle with a 2k urethane primer. It will be able to block sand and will build and can be sprayed over filler and old paint. Roberlo me1 is a great primer .

After applying a couple coats of 2k I found some scratches, can I apply a glaze over the scratches without sanding the primer or do I need to sand the primer first?
@GarageNoise2 жыл бұрын
Sand the primer in that spot with 180 or something close before glaze.

Can different types of primers be used on top of each other? What about different panels? I have a 54 Belair and under the trim pieces it's pitted because of rust. Do I just build up primer it until it's smooth? Thanks
@GarageNoise2 жыл бұрын
Yes, some primers can be used on top of each other. For pitted metal you can use a thin coat of filler to smooth thenmm out or a high build 2k primer or an epoxy primer. Depends on what you doing and how deep thit pits are. If your painting entire vehicle and taking down to bare metal epoxy is what I would choose it's direct to metal primer and fills well and you can apply filler over it after its sanded.

Can you primer over 150 grit with that high build primer thanks
@GarageNoise3 жыл бұрын
You can, But when that primer fully cures it will shrink a bit and could reveal scratches . Personally I don't like to primering over anything coarser than 320. Thanks for watching brother hope this helps.

When using the etch primer when sanding through filler and hitting metal, after you spray the primer on that area, do you need to lightly sand it before spraying a non DTM 2k primer? What would happen if there is a small metal,spot that just got primed over with 2k and not an epoxy or etch primer?
@GarageNoise2 жыл бұрын
You would most likely be fine if it was just a small spot. The best thing to do is use a 2k primer that's a DTM most of them are these days . Upol make a great one that's reasonably priced.

So im painting a car gonna sand the old paint off. Then I use primer? Sand it? Or just let dry then paint over primer ? And what sealent do I use or can use after I'm done painting?
@GarageNoise3 жыл бұрын
If your sanding it down to bare metal I would use epoxy primer then sand and paint. If you sanding to bare metal you must use a direct to metal primer! Hope this helps
@dustinvandriest84643 жыл бұрын
What did you use as a sealer?
@GarageNoise3 жыл бұрын
Didn't use a sealer, what I use for sealer is Roberlo M1 It can be used as a high build prime, light primer and sealer and it's a direct to metal primer.

@@GarageNoise so can you straight paint over this primer you just used?
