I've played over 500 hours in generation 2, and HGSS i've played for over 100 hours, and i've played the bug catching contest like 50 times at least, and i NEVER knew their remaining HP affected the score, but i usually did use sleep powder or hypnosis (with ghastly/Haunter early game) early... after beating the game, so after contest 3+ or something, i started using false swipe Scyther to catch instead, and i rarely won the contest after that, usually ending dead last 😓
