Rick Stein is one of my favourite chefs. I haven't had the opportunity to visit any of his restaurants in my life so I thought today would be a good day to head down to his restaurant in Barnes for a bit of seafood. I'm planning to go to Padstow in a few months time, so I'm looking forward to this one!

I've cooked this Dish many many times professionally. In Scotland on the East Coast. I'm also Scottish. The Cullen Skink liquor should be no thicker than whole milk. In other words there is no thickeners added only the potatoes. If the potatoes aren't over cooked you'll get very little starch released. The Skink you're eating is cooked classically.

Keith Floyd was a genius and gave me a passion for cooking. Rick Stein is also amazing, but let’s not forget the great David Pritchard, who without, we would not know either of these great chefs. He was the one that brought Keith and Rick to our screens and sadly died in 2019.

As for the thinness of Cullen Skink soup, yes, it can be thin, but it also depends on the type of potato used to cook it. I prefer to use floury "tatties" such as Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes, which can thicken it up a bit. Coming from a Scotsman that grew up in a town 12 miles from Cullen

I loved Keith Floyd, too! He was very clever and quirky but truly knew his way around the kitchen. Rick is also a favourite. I wrote to him a couple times as his dog, Chalky, was related to mine! I have signed photos (complete with a paw print) from them, tucked away in one of his cook books! The food looked good - I think I would've picked the same things as you, in that set menu, though the lemon tart that went with the bottom options would also have appealed! Again, a fantastic vlog and brilliant review. Your style of presentation is great, so please don't change. Definitely my favourite food reviewer now - you don't complicate things with fancy language or fluff it out to lessen the times when things aren't so great! Thank you! xx

Glad you enjoyed your visit Gary. Place used to be called The Depot and had been there more than 25 years. Rick famously never wanted to open a London restaurant, so it had to take a place of such location and calibre to change his mind! My family and I can only afford to eat there on special occasions, but when we do we always push the boat out (pun intended! 😉) and go for the expensive seafood options, coz...when in Rome eh?! That includes having a cheeky bottle of wine which is always expertly selected and recommended by the staff and Rick's own son! Had probably the best sherry trifle I will ever taste in my entire life on one birthday visit. I still speak of it to this day, while gazing longingly at the photo I took! 😋

Like you i'm an absolute Rick Stein fan boy, BUT.....all of his places always massively overcharge dining out on the name, particularly in Padstein, he's basically a chain now like The Ivy etc but due his large approachable tv presence he will always have a conga line of unsuspecting tourists, but that's where we are in hospitality at the moment, also at those prices, the main needed a lemon wedge! :D :D :D ooking forward to the next one! I've been to this rick stein's multiple times. I love this restaurant. I'm not sure if the Maitre'D Jean-Francois was working when you were there (youngish looking guy with blonde hair) but he is simply fantastic. First time I was there my friend tipped his glass over and it broke. TGhey moved us to another table, replaced our drinks and offered to re-make my Sea Bass but as I was 3/4 through it anyway and don't like wasting food I declined. As a result of that service, I have been back for every single menu change for 4 years. They also have lovely seating overlooking the thames.

Ive had traditional Cullen Skink many times and it is supposed to be quite thin, to me that was a perfect example and looked delicious, those fishcakes did look a little bit small but I suppose the fact there was three of them made it suffice, I really did like the look of them and OMG that sticky toffee pudding with cornish clotted cream, Heaven on a plate, I think all in all considering it is a high end Restaurant value wise it was spot on, compare to the infamous Tom Kerridge Fish and Chips debackle and this wins hands down, Personally I would mark it 9 out of 10, really enjoyed this review Gary, regards Gav

The soup doesn’t have to be thick (I am Scottish) just full of flavour. I was actually impressed with the fish cakes as you had three! Another great review. Thanks Gary. I'm glad you mentioned Keith Floyd. What a character. Somewhere in my house I've got his book 'Floyd on Fish'. I don't think I ever made any of the recipes but it's worth reading just for his asides. You can imagine them in his voice with the accompanying mannerisms. In the intro to one- and bear in mind the cultural references pertain to 1984- he says something like "this is a dish that you might even persuade your orange haired kids to eat, if you can get them out of their bedrooms where they're listening to Headache 100".

Three great plates of food and an idyllc location on the river. You mentioned the mussels as a starter. As a huge seafood fan, that would have caught my eye. Whilst I love a sticky toffee pud, I think I would have opted for the the ginger pudding, as long as it had a decent kick of ginger to it.

Another classy looking place with great looking dishes. But haddock starter, haddock mains?!?! I too thought the soup far too thin, that's not the way i've had/seen it in the past. And on (my) screen, the fishcakes looked a good size, and with there being 3. But didn't look like there was enough sauce to go around. And STP, you can't go wrong, ha. PS, scratch the starter/main comment, I once had chicken livers, followed by calves liver. The tum wants what the tum wants eh 🙂

Hi Gary, looked like a pretty good dining experience. Yes, I've always loved Rick Stein's TV programs. You get a lot more than great food. You get Rick reading Thomas Hardy poems, excerpts from novels, and the culture and history of the places he visits. Spain and the story of El Cid comes first to mind. A great man, much loved by his fans who number in the millions. When I was a kid, I'd sit myself down on the couch, mum's terrific Sri Lankan curry on my lap, and watch Keith Floyd, imagining I was having some of that rare-vintage French red he was quaffing. What an extraordinary man ! He seemed to have such a pleasant nature. ( I have to figure out how to get onto Telegram today ) . My score was 9/10. Thanks Gary. Another fine noshery you got us into !

I've been to Rick Steins in Barnes for lunch twice in the past. I ate from the A la Carte menu both times, the first time I had baked Cod and the second seafood linguine. On a third occasion, I took a mostly vegetarian friend and she had Monkfish which arrived quite undercooked and had to be sent back, which was very surprising. Apart from the river views from the glass conservatory, it is a nicely appointed establishment but food wise I really only ever rated it as so-so. It wasn't massively pricey but the bill got your attention! I thought the fish cakes looked bigger on camera than they clearly were in real life and the Cullen Skink was definitely a bit thin for me. I rate it as a place where you try it a few times and if it's still not hitting the right note with you then move on, I have. I should add that going there by train can be difficult as the train service in that area is not that good, go by bus or drive, if you can find anywhere to park. It's a 7/8 for me more like a 7.5 and can only be rated as a little above an OK experience with slightly upmarket food and where the price is on the edge of trading on the name alone but not being quite able to back up what should be a solid reputation.

This was an especially interesting chapter to watch. As much as I love watching Gary eat various breakfasts, watching this complete seafood dinner with its variety of ingredients was even more interesting. The eggs with the fish cakes were a very unusual combination.

Rick Stein was always MY personal favourite TV chef! His TV shows are ALWAYS truly excellent and his enthusiasm is very inspirational. His journey around India sampling the countries awesome cuisine was my alltime favourite. I HIGHLY recommend that anyone into cooking tries Ricks Egg Curry from his India trip (he visited a place where women cooked huge vats of this egg curry for the areas homeless/poor) The curry is SO full of incredible flavours (like Indian food in general) and uses smoked paprica, coconut milk, ginger etc. The smell of it cooking beats EVERYTHING ive ever made and my kids LOVE it when i cook it even though my son won't even eat it (ultra fussy eater!) and my youngest daughter doesn’t like anything with any spice. I usually swap out the eggs with premarinaded (overnight in yoghurt and spices, makes a HUGE difference to the meat!) tender chicken or you can use lamb or beef. The sauce is so creamy due to the coconut milk (ive added coconut cream to the sauce to which makes an even creamier, more luxurious sauce!) So anyone into cooking and curries please try this incredible curry. By making the food yourself you can control the spice level, how creamy it is and influence the flavour to your tastes after making the dish a few times (its an easy simple dish too!)

Keith Floyd had a house a few kilometres from where i am now in Kinsale, Cork, Ireland. I remember him dressed in a suit and bow-tie frequenting his favourite pub, the 1601. His house by the water used to have a life-sized realistic looking crocodile anchored in the water, presumably for his amusement

It all looked very good to me. Expensive I agree. We were lucky about 20 years ago to be at The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow and actually sat next to Rick, his wife at the time and some of his staff/friends, they had just re opened after re-decoration and interior design. Had a short chat with him, top bloke, down to earth guy. It's our go to treat restaurant as we love seafood & Cornwall. PS - The one place I really recommend (above lots of great places in Cornwall) is the chip shop near the harbour at Mevagissey, Oh Wow! Could be awkward filming as it's takeaway only however.

(88) Delighted that Rick Stein is still going for it. Really liked watching his cooking shows when I lived in NZ and also Keith Floyd. Everything looked picture perfect; personally I only had Cullen Skink that had a light broth like that one. Shed 5 (restaurant on the Wellington wharf front, not sure if its still there) only had it on their menu on the weekend. Always came with a fresh bap made in house. I would have given it a 10, but I have a small appetite.

A lovely restaurant in a beautiful area. The skink did look a tad watery, however for those who know their Scottish soup it would seem that the consistency was correct. I believe you Gary when ypu say this was flavoursome. The fishcakes were possibly something I would have chosen. The eggs that accompanied them looked mouthwatering. The S T Pudding and especially the clotted cream!!!!! Yum, yum, yum. That was a nice review Gary. Relaxed, nice food, friendly efficient service. Ahhhh!!! The Master; Mr. K. Floyd Esq. He who brought such luminaries as Mr. Stein (It’s Rick, Dear Boy!) and Mr. Rhodes (Yes!!! Keith!!!) to the forefront of my interest in cooking. Wonderful Stuff! Having been fortunate enough to experience both “The Seafood Restaurant” and an outpost in Malmesbury, I can say that they are both exemplary…Different, of course, but still wonderful. If you are venturing to the far, beautiful, West Country, may I humbly suggest a visit to Philps Pasties in Hayle? They really do weave some sort of magic that us mere Mortals cannot begin to fathom in their baking prowess.

Having watched Rick Stein for decades I’m a little perplexed by the image I have of Stein in my head with the restaurants ambiance decor and menu, I wonder if Rick has much involvement or is it investors paying for his name .Your exuberance led me to believe it was going to be more than an 8/10 .Would i go there ,probably not but I think Padstow might be more on the money. Hello from New Zealand. Love your videos Gary. We've been to Rick Stein's seafood restaurant in Cornwall 3 times, first visit was 2014 and it was absolutely fantastic. We took our son in 2019 and what a disappointment, it was so bad that we said we'd never go back again 😢I'd love you to review that restaurant even though I know you said you were going to try his fish and chips in Padstow. Interesting fact, Rick lived here in New Zealand back in the day! 😊 Keep up the great work, you're the best ❤

I was gonna comment about how expensive it was, but to be fair I paid £50 for a McDonalds the other day (granted it was for 3 of us) but I think that "cheap food" really isn't very cheap anymore so maybe a set menu somewhere like this is actually not too bad value wise when other companies are charging similar for a cardboard box full of grease that you have to eat in your car.

We agree with your comments, with Cullen Skink I usually add some cream if it appears too thin, depends on the potato used. The fish cakes could have been given something to make them more of a main course , the sweet probably was the Star of the show , all in all perhaps just one to add to your list of Michelin Chefs.Take care on to the next.Sheila & Patrick.

Keith Floyd pioneered cooking ingredients outdoors. He influenced chefs like James Martin and Marco Pierre White. There were some anecdotes. At Keith Floyd's restaurant a customer who constantly complains. He ordered Veal Escalope. Keith cooked the beer mats, coated it in breadcrumbs and fried it. The customer liked the escalope but he complained about the Chocolate Brownie.

I was used to my mum's and grannie's cullen skink which I make and as they would have said it should stick to your ribs. These old recipes were intended to fill you up cheaply. So I would say that soup was a nice smoked haddock dish but not cullen skink, but it would be a dull world if we all thought the same.
