Well done! Gaslighting & addiction are heavy topics, but this was light enough cautionary tale to get the point across. And to those arguing, this did have gaslighting, if not metaphorical. The lighter both presented tendencies of a gas lighter such as pushing blame and guilt onto their victim making them feel like it was their mistake and fault, causing self doubt and lacking self-esteem in decisions. Metaphorically, the lighter represents gas lighters in a toxic relationship, making themselves out to be the victim, pushing blame, then convincing their victim they were at fault & leaving them feeling like they still need them in the end, like how the guy still reached out for her before his death/ko.

@nadiarey41962 жыл бұрын
I didn't perceive it like the guy got second thoughts or self-doubt during the short. But I could be wrong... On the other hand, I'm gonna mention what Katherine Black said in other comment, because it was my perception too: what you describe with pushing blame sounds like guilt-tripping rather than gaslighting. I mean, was there an actual attempt by the lighter to make this guy think what she said was what he actually thought? If he did, it sounds counterproductive. It would be like saying "I want you to think I'm trash" or "I want you to think I'm not hot enough for you."
@nadiarey41962 жыл бұрын
But. The gaslighting could be someplace else in the subtext of the smoking paralellism, like you mentioned. I like your interpretation. I just haven't been able to read it that way or that clearly in what I'm perceiving of the short.

Man, this is literally gaslighting itself. I mean for what I know there are 02 reactions gaslighters give when you break or cut all ties with them. 01: "The after all that I've done for you" reaction: Like Mother Gothel and many more, they'll use words like after everything I've done this is how you treat me? in public or private to make the victim feel ashamed and think the gaslighters look like some safe haven, even though they're evil. 02: "The what have I done to you" reaction: El is a new case, she is like "am I not good enough for you" and yes, they do this for the victim to have pity on them by pushing the blame on them. And I also noticed she doesn't care about what smoking does to him or the harmful physical and mental effects, she only cares about benefitting herself like her line "Do what's best for you and ditch me here" and "I get it, You think I'm trash". This film shows gaslighting, toxicness and addiction in a whole different level now. But words aside, El is kinda cute, I like her design, though she gives Ember from the movie Elemental vibes. Nice melody especially the violin when El goes mad. Love it. Reminds of Fuelled for some reason. Anyways, that's all my idiotic brain could say, Thanks.

I'm sure u didn't pick up on the gaslighting in the animation cuz u got the incomplete definition of gaslighting. In full, gaslight is defined as a form of psychological abuse in which the abuser twists, omits and/or makes-up information to make the victim question their perception, memory and sanity in a way that works *in the abuser's favor* . El twisted the facts to place her in the role of a victim that doesn't exist by making up opinions he [didn't] had in the guise of accusative questions, to make him think he was to blame for her actions when she's the one who's toxic. TL;DR she did do gaslight to him, he said "I break, need sort myself out" and she went "NO U! I'm victim! Me misbehave is ur fault!". She twisted the facts to alter his perception of the situation to make him think he was the jerk when things went up in flames because of her (in both senses!).
@nadiarey41962 жыл бұрын
@@IMayOrMayHaveNot That's not a bad interpretation. And Ginger Snap's option works too. It's just that to me, gaslighting would look something like: -I'm leaving you. -...Pass the salt. -You heard what I said? I'm breaking up with you. -No you are not. - But-- -Are we still talking about this? I'm not in the mood for one of your cries for attention. -It's not a cry for attention, I'm really leaving you. -* condecendingly * And you think that's wise? You are not exactly a garden flower. Don't be stupid. - Why aren't you taking this seriously? - You'll have your little play time and come crawling back. You should spare yourself the embarrassment and ask me to forgive you now. Have some self respect. - I'm not happy with you. -... Oh? Alright, go ahead. You know nobody else is going to put up with your little scenes. And think about somebody other than yourself. Are you really going to embarrass me like this? Think with your head. Do you think anybody is going to love you like I do? Someday you'll figure out you should feel lucky you got someone like me. Now, are we done with this? - But I want to-- - * hits the table acting mad and then leaves as if he was the one wronged (not ever addressing the issue) * ...or something alike this. If you watch the movie Gaslight the term comes from, it's a lot more obvious. Anyways, I mentioned it because often the word is misused to refer to any kind of toxic relationship, and gaslighting is a major psychological long-term trauma that comes from someone actively trying to alter how you perceive things in their favour. A cheating husband or wife calling their spouse paranoid are better examples of gaslighters. Or a dismissive parent. The one in the animation is an example of a trauma-inducing encounter with an entitled derranged hysteric person. But at least when I watched it, it felt to me like it was missing all the key elements to be gaslighting. The fire gal is not disregarding what the guy says enough to be it, for one thing. She's playing victim but there isn't an ongoing attempt at altering what he perceives as true. I still liked the short. It doesn't need to go that dark.

"do what's best for you and just ditch me here" wow, it's like El knew smoking was bad for Ryan, yet she still wanted him to continue smoking, she honestly doesn't care about his well being, which is why she said "Do what's best for you" only to make him feel bad. And to try to manipulate him. This short is about manipulation.

@JaspersCampfire2 жыл бұрын
Good short films always deliver suprisingly strong characterization in such a short time. I know a short film is good when I want to see more of the characters, yet also feel like the snapshot I saw has perfect poetic unity that would be ruined by anything else added or taken away. That's how I feel about this film too.

A picture of narcissistic relationship. Once you say no/refuse/leave the narc, the narc will put out his/her narcissistic rage, and he/she will never stop. The lighter is the narc.

Mah dude, I think u either should give urself more time to know a person, find new people in different circles or broaden ur type, cuz however is it u engage in these relationships, wherever u find them or whoever u define as a 'good partner' prolly ain't producing good results for u.

Ryan should be more man and put his foot down about breaking up with her. She basically control the chat and the situation. But still, this is a meaningful short film. Btw, gas station is a worst place to break up with a freaking lighter.
@victoriapulcifer62182 жыл бұрын
Well, that's what "gaslighting" is about in terms of irl relationships. You use manipulation and control to make your partner feel small and like they *can't* put their foot down, for any number of reasons. Just because men are supposed to be tough based on arbitrary and worthless gender roles doesn't automatically make them immune to abuse and manipulation :/

What I love is that there's two meanings, one being literal and the other metaphoric. The literal meaning is that the guy literally couldn't quit his smoking addiction, and the metaphoric is presenting a toxic relationship, and gaslighting is, of course, a behavior that happens very often in these relationships.
