Geld did know who lion mask was but being so serious he doesn't want to go all out against a carrion that can't go all out since he can't reveal his identity. Carrion was a demon lord untill a few days ago so being able to resist a full force blow from him is a great sign of strenght (the demon lords where considered as the highest threat possible for entire countries). Gobta is regarded for the whole novel as a lucky coward: he doesn't want to fight but be it instinct or luck he dodges all the time. He didn't know he would fight since he was asleep during the meeting and in the first match he tried to run out of the ring to be disqualified but his opponent kept stopping him. When he fights carrion he instead wants to win in order to obtain the fishing road so unlike geld he goes all out and he manages to obtain a tactical victory (he forces carrion to retire since he was able to hit his mask thanks to carrion being distracted by and attack from ranga that carrion didn't expect since ranga went out of the ring)

Gobta is underrated. I remember season 1 when he didn't transform after being named which was strange to Rimuru means he was 😅 probably at his highest level. Another thing being able to transform to what you like hence Gabiru and his sister taking 2 different evolutionary paths. His sister is like the Milim's faithful without intermarrying with humans.

Gobta never struck me as being strong. Yeah, hakuro is training him, and he is definitely improving. But he strikes me as just incredibly lucky with a decent amount of skill.

One thing this show has done a great job with Gobta is even when he is fighting a much stronger opponent he is still easily able to have a conversation with someone else without missing a beat. I think it hints at how powerful he really is

gobeta and ranga actually both have alot of untapped potential which is hinted at in the recent episode (gobetas observation skills being praised) and as echisero said once he has his training/torture session with millim he and ranga will get a massive power up

Well, in the novel, the figth between geld and carrion was more than just a one shot, but they make it this way in the anime to condens it in one episode.

I believe you are missing the power scaling logic, which is why you received your conclusion. First and foremost, Frey & Carrion observed themselves to be lesser than the other demon lords but still strong enough to be considered one. When Geld's father faced Rimiru, he considered to be a demon lord level monster or was only at the gates of that rank. Geld was at that level after he was named and took his place, but he is far more concerned with making amends for the atrocities than with becoming stronger. One of those reasons is he wants to show that the orcs have changed so honor is more important to him. So it makes sense that he would hold himself back so that he could take on a restricted demon lord and not go all out. Before I explain Gobta's level, I'd like to bring up something concerning Shion strength: she isn't technically powerful by herself. Her newly acquired expertise made her stronger and enabled her to defeat those who were superior to her. Thus making her stronger than what she is capable by if the ability functioned like others with limitations in place. Masayuki and Hinata are the only other characters who have been introduced with these types of abilities. This is why she was able to physically harm Clayman and those who were above her. She was a mismatch for his abilities and that made it even more one sided than it would have been. Gobta, on the other hand, is a sluggish fighter who dislikes being in the thick of the action. He possesses a high level of natural talent and adaptation, but his personality characteristics limit him. This is why he did not change his appearance as everyone evolved; his potential is already at its peak in his current form, but his restrictions make it less important. Now onto his power ranking, and the simplest way to describe him is that he is the weakest of the group of powerful characters, just as Carrion and Frey were among the demon lords. Gobta, like Shion and Hinata, has the ability to punch above his weight class with success while not possessing a skill his natural luck makes up for what the talent can't provide. The problem is that, despite all, Rimiru understands his personality and views him through that way. Raphael and the others view him more so on paper and Gobta is much better in that realm then in reality because it takes away the motivation issues.

When masayuki was introduced they said that his abilities work on lesser beings so It probably won't work if gobta isn't a lesser being compared to masayuki

Can't wait till next week. Going to be great. Should get to see the opening of the Labyrinth in the second half of the episode. For the tournament finals I'll just say that charm is not the only thing Masayuki's unique skill does and leave it at that.

Ha! I don't think you'll be disappointed. You're very far off, yet I remember thinking the same when I read the book. I wouldn't call it a tournament arc per say. it was really just to get Masayuki into the story. and provide character development for a couple other characters.

Okay so I really like your chain of thought about "Can Shion or someone close to Rimuru who can harm him charm them?" and yes it does infact get relevant next arc, only thing is that it's not Shion and instead someone significantly stronger and and they are not "charmed" as much as controlled.

I generally hate tournament arcs. Usually it's just a bunch of action with no character development. I'd much rather have a good Rom like Signs of Affection, a good Romcom, or an anime like Mushoku Tensai for the emotions.

What is it about Gobta are we missing. Both time Rimaru mentioned Gobtas name Rapheal wanted to say somthing, but didn't. This happened 2 times which leaves me with a nagging suspicion of 2 possibilities. Either Gobta gonna evolve some new power (remember lady luminous gave Rimaru a new power to share with his subordinates) OR he shares the same Fate bending power the hero does ?? because of his extreme luck in fighting situations.. Just a thought...
