Even though they’d definitely want Homelander acquitted, I couldn’t buy that they’d make anything other than the most sanitized content imaginable for the sake of reaching the broadest audience. I especially couldn’t buy that they’d back conspiracy nuts. Even in this world I think you’d only be appealing to at most a quarter of people with that shit, especially after the Firecracker shenanigans. That being said I enjoyed the depiction of the Homelanders vs. Starlighters and the fight that broke out. Like when the quote "Your ego is writing checks your body can't cash" from Top Gun was used verbatim in Hot Shots. I agree, I think season 4 is the most blatantly obvious about attacking the far right and Christian Evangelicals, which might be why more viewers with those beliefs realize it's mocking them. People who take that as the only or even overall message of the show are missing the point too though. It has many things to say about corporate greed, holding people in power accountable, and a lot of other things. It's not like Homelander actually believes what he's saying to his base, all he cares about is power and his god complex, which can also be a comment on far-right ideology and its leaders, but above all and also speaking to The Boys as a superhero show, it shows that giving people a lot of power while not holding them accountable for their actions, or putting them in a place where you just can't hold them accountable, is dangerous and wrong.

The Phoenix Five storyline had not so subtle commentary about nuclear armaments too. Marshal Law is another British supe. He's a hero hunter. He hunts heroes, as he puts it. Hasn't found any. The American hero is the Messianic hero. It's the product of a puritanical society. This is basically what Marx meant by religion being the opium of the people. Don't wait for somebody to save you. Get off your knees and take your rights. Darcy Sullivan is wrong in one regard if he by heroes mean supes. Supes have never been very popular in Europe. Superman and the likes were mostly read by children, back when comics were a thing. Comics have traditionally been divided into color and b&w. Children read color comics. (Here are modern Euro supes: www.europecomics.com/catalog/) B&w were for more mature readers. Graphic novels, as they now often are known, were an exception. They are the likes of Tintin and Blueberry. Donald Duck by Carl Barks was also big. The biggest of them all in the case of Scandinavia.

Quick correction-it's not oil. It's E-710 which spells oil upside down. But it's still /technically/ bug juice. I think Helldivers doesn't get nearly as much flak for "being too political" because it satirizes something so extreme that very few people would actually say that Super Earth is actually the real good faction (although to be fair, none of the others seem to be particularly good either.) If you swapped the politics and had SE be an extreme Communist faction rather than fascist, you'd probably only offend the "tankies" anyway, much like how only actual fascists seem to agree with Super Earth.

Homelander epitomizes the worst traits of humanity, showcasing how unchecked power, egotism, and moral decay can lead to catastrophic outcomes. His character is a chilling representation of what happens when someone with immense abilities is devoid of empathy, accountability, and a moral compass. Homelander’s actions, driven by his insatiable need for adoration and control, reveal a profound narcissism. He exploits his powers for personal gratification, disregarding the lives and well-being of others. His facade of heroism masks a deeply corrupt and malevolent nature, highlighting the dangers of idolizing powerful figures without scrutinizing their true intentions and character. Moreover, Homelander’s manipulation of public perception and media exemplifies how those in power can distort reality to maintain their dominance. His lack of empathy and frequent displays of cruelty reflect a fundamental disregard for human life and dignity. This portrayal forces viewers to confront the terrifying potential of power without accountability and the dark consequences of a society that elevates and empowers the morally bankrupt. In essence, Homelander is a stark cautionary tale about the corruption of power, the fragility of moral integrity, and the dangers inherent in blind hero-worship. His character is a potent reminder of the capacity for evil within humanity when power is left unchecked and ethical boundaries are ignored.

One of my favorite things about the Boys especially in season 4 is that while they tackle the dogma of evangelical Christianity they don’t say that it’s worthless or a shame. Like for example Hughie wanting to practice forgiveness on the people who wrongs him like A-Train or the characters learning to forgive themselves. Which as someone who is a Christian/Omnist is something I respect a lot because they’re are a lot of good things said by it but is perverted by greed, pride, and arrogance like the super heroes in a meta textual sense. It’s something that I think is very well done in the show compared to the comics.

Stormfront was the name of a white supremacist forum that got (temporarily, apparently) shut down in 2011 by the Italian police. Interestingly enough, the name was in the comics as well, so after a quick search, the site has been around since 1995. It is still up as well, despite going down multiple times.

I mean the show definitely portrays celebrities, companies, and politicians who use cynical appeals to marginalized groups to gain popularity and power. So in a way it is a parody of those things, but the critique is not “socially liberal ideas are bad,” but rather, “people pretend to care about social justice when all they really want is money and power.” I’d say this is still a criticism of capitalist and right-wing authoritarian power. There’s hardly any discernible criticism of actual leftist ideas as far as I can tell, but I don’t think those commenters would even know that when they saw it.
@reviewchan98064 ай бұрын
@@GeneticallyModifiedSkeptic There's ofc complacent liberal/dems who have to play along with american capitalism. It's got some critique of empty representation too. But in the end, it's showing that companies are only interested in ratings and optics instead of morals, which is philosophically clearly anti-rightwing-thinking. Maybe these people don't realize they hate true conservatism yet.
