George Harrison - Carl Aid Rehearsals 1985

Here is some footage from the 1985 Carl Perkins HBO taping. These excerpts come from the (original) rehearsal tape. This one-man camera was taping behind the scenes material, hence he did not always tape things complete. There are a few Ringo songs that were shot complete...

Ive never seen the rehearsals but I have watched the concert several times. Wow. Unbelievable! That night will go down in history. It was wonderful to see how much love for Carl everybody had, from Eric Clapton, Dave Mason, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Roseanne Cash, and all the cool young cats playing percussion and upright bass!!! And Carl was in perfect form! This is Rockabilly! A lost art.

So nice seeing Ringo make Eric laugh. Did he say something like "It's all that shitty gold you've got on"? Everyone seemed to look up to Carl Perkins, and he seemed like such a nice guy. It feels so strange that we've been without George, in a physical sense, for over 20 years now. Seeing precious footage of him makes him seem fabled. There's no smartphone video of him for example.

I distinctly remember when I first saw this incredible Carl Perkins special pleasantly surprised by how George stole the show; my only complaint would be why the hell didn’t Ringo play drums for George’s performance?? and I always hoped George would do a Rockabilly album; he teased us with this show & his picking on The Wilburys “Rattled”
