Within You Without You has been my favorite Beatles song for a few years now. It sums up my spiritual experience with psychedelics & meditation perfectly: “When you’ve seen beyond yourself then you may find peace of mind is waiting there. And the time will come when you see we’re all one and life flows on within you and without you!” I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that he consciously wanted to write a smaller number of meaningful, durable songs. Because the Beetles love the ideas of Transcendental Meditation, influenced me to signup. I practiced TM for about a year. It relaxed me but my feelings of inferiority and worthlessness had not changed until I met my teacher the late Gregory Grover in 1970. I am now a teacher of the philosophy of Spinoza and Gurdjieff's teachings. Reading or listening will not change anything; however, it does feel good, but feelings is not enough. Clarity of mind by improving your understanding. To know thyself, to understand your emotions, and to work directly with a teacher that knows the way.

Its amazing how he realized that the teachings of Jesus are true, but the way the Church has been using them is not OK. His eagerness to get a direct spiritual experience, and to use his musical carrier to communicate some great spiritual concepts (like in the "Inner Light" song) was spot on too. He seemed to have an outstanding humility too.

George was my dad’s favorite Beatle. My dad was a cynic and an atheist but I think it was really more of a reaction to the terror of mortality. Because when he was dying he would say, “this is a phase, we’re here briefly for whatever reason, who knows. It’s the moment, and the moment is slipping away even as we’re in it” - I never forgot those words. It was always amusing to me that a guy so cynical and always cracking jokes about god or meditation or everything George was seeking to understand loved George’s music to distraction.

kenan mass from what I can tell just from my little bit of research is that there is great knowledge there but there is a thing that happens when knowledge is hoarded and ego’s are caressed... the beauty of a thing becomes corrupted. I think George got the best messages from extremely flawed people... I’ve also been reading about the Hare Krishna movement and there is much about that organization that is troubling that I never knew about. The founder married an 11 year old girl when he was 22 for instance. Yuck. I mean cultural relativism ok... but from what I have been reading these kinds of arranged marriages between men and children went on for a very long time. Also those boarding schools were hot houses for physical abuse and child rape. Very ugly stuff. I love George! I’m an Allen Ginsburg fan but sometimes you got to be like Malcolm X and tell a charlatan that they aren’t wearing any clothes... I.E. Elijah Muhammad. All that said... everything George is taking about here is very powerful and I think he had the right idea.

George, and John also I think, often talked about the madness of Beatlemania as being like a hurricane going on around them, but that they themselves felt like they were in the eye of the hurricane, where everything is calm and quiet. And I wondered if there might be a connection between that and the image of the raging, restless sea, which also right at the bottom, is calm and still. That memory ( of Beatlemania ) may have given them an intuition that meditation was perhaps the thing that they'd really been looking for all along ?
