I like the PT the way it is. All the details in TPM and AOTC are important to understanding why Anakin chose to do what he did to try and save Padmé and ended up falling to the Darkside. I've never understood why people didn't get that. Maybe they just missed the details? Edit: I thought he was crying on Mustafar because he had been trying so hard to be the Jedi he looked up to and admired as a kid, but had to do all these terrible, very non-Jedi, things to save Padmé. He had a power. He did what the Jedi had told him to control and use his power, but he was never allowed to use it to save the people he cared about, like he dreamed he would one day when he was a boy.

I think the overall arc of the PT is important and its hard for me to imagine how an arc of equal satisfaction would be made without showing what they did. The OT showing Vader's fall and the PT showing his rise, strikes me as the perfect symmetrical arcs that resonate together and build on each other better than anything else could have.

@@Logomachus I think it’s uncharitable for me on an enjoyment or quality basis to say it’s as a whole not good. I haven’t dug into it. Everyone raves about the Thrawn trilogy I’m sure it’s great. I may play KOTOR soon; I played SWTOR for a bit. George has taken set pieces from it and uses them. Then again I also don’t like the idea of a race of aliens that are immune to the force! My issue with it is how it’s confused everyone’s understanding of the moral lessons of George Lucas’ work. People don’t understand George’s vision for the prequels in part bc of the EU. Those stories in another universe from George’s work influenced and primed them to expect something from George he didn’t want. I think the moral lessons from his work should be preserved and understood correctly even if people disagree.

I definitely feel Ep 1-3 work better as is. We already know Vader is a bad guy. We can always get that in other things like the epic scenes with him in Rogue One & Rebels. I agree with your take on Ep 2. It doesn't really hold it's own, but is a HUGE part of Anakin's story. I think it would have been better if some of the deleted scenes had not been removed. Particularly the ones when Padme's family. They do a much better job of selling that Padme has feelings for Anakin and is trying to hide them.

I remember being 20 years old back when The Phantom Menace came out. My friends and I all went to watch it. I distinctively remember a few of us saying that we hated it because we wanted the Darth Vader that we remembered and instead we got a young boy who loved his mother. I think that was the reason why some people had such a hard time with TPM and AOTC. Those movies were showing us how and why Anakin fell to The Dark Side. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" and that phrase best describes what happened to Anakin. Anakin wasn't evil, he was just scared and broken, especially after he was told that Padme, and his children died because of his force choke. By that point he was both physically and mentally broken! After that loss in spite of everything he did to try and prevent it, no matter how monstrous, he broke down and retreated deep down into Darth Vader. If it wasn't for Luke, then Anakin would've never found his way back to The Light Side. So even though I was one of the people bashing TPM and AOTC back when they first came out, I now realize that I was wrong. Those movies may not have been perfect, but they didn’t deserve the hate that they got. I'm even willing to bet that what we got was much better than what that marketing company wanted to give us.

The Clone Wars would have been SO important for more back story that i think it would be one of the most important shows of all time for the franchise at that point. Lastly you can then get into making movies or shows of backstories of all the important characters like Kenobi or Vader etc. to really solidify the story.

I personally couldn’t go with any option that removed The Phantom Menace. I know allot of people don’t like it, but it’s my personal favourite. It shows how the smallest entity of corruption can come into power, changing the world/galaxy in an instant. It shows Palpatine’s cunning and intelligence. It shows that one of the most twisted villains we’ve ever seen in film, was at one point an innocent child just like everyone else. It shows that he loves his family and that he has dreams and aspirations of his own, that we all know crumble to dust in the coming years. Darth Maul; enough said. Qui-Gon is a pillar of truth and nature in a very advanced and corrupt system. I could rant all day about The Phantom Menace and it’s themes/characters.

It fits perfectly with the beginning of a new hope.

When Darth Vader came through that doorway in his first appearance on screen, I did not care if he was robot, human, alien, or any mixture of the group. All I knew is he was badass! Now, hypotheticals aside, had George gotten his way and started the prequel trilogy with a variant of ROTS, we/YOU wouldn't have current episodes 1 & 2 to miss. They would not have existed. Having faith in George's storytelling is where you have to trust that would've gotten expositional flashbacks and dream sequences to give the audience what they NEED to know about Vader. Watching Vader carry out onslaughts that other Commanders may have failed at or ones that Palpatine specifically wanted him for would've been awesome. And here's why it would've worked better than anyone could possibly imagine. Society was shifting by that point. Late '70's, early '80's, we loved our heroes. The villains were just that: bad guys that needed to be brought to justice or eliminated entirely. Gradually, especially if it was made that we could empathize with the villain, people started to understand the villain's POV easier. Enter Vader. Just a complete badass. Completely overshadowing the Emperor. Didn't need to understand to accept the badassery, but humanizing him? That gave him support which is why he is now beloved.

At the time of the release of the prequels, Lucas explained that Episodes 1 & 2 were stories that had to be told. Episode 1 shows us the perfect relationship between a Padawan and his Master. This example helped us to recognize Anakin’s flaws in Episode 2. Episode 2 shows us a highly flawed relationship a between Padawan and his Master. Many of Anakin’s actions would seem normal for a teenager, but we recognize them as being wrong for a Jedi. Episode 3 shows us the inner turmoil and conflict that has been building inside of Anakin come to a climax.

I've grown to appreciate, and even like, the PT for what it is, it's potential, and what is, underneath all the flaws, a good story. That said, I do wish it had stayed truer to the dialogue in the OT -- Anakin was already a great pilot when Obi-wan met him, Leia remembers her "real mother" clearly, etc. So, if I were to alter the PT, I wouldn't make Ep. 3 the first PT movie followed by two Vader films. Rather, I would have the first movie take place when Anakin is older, during the clone wars. The second would deal with his decent into darkness (so, basically, RotS), and the third would show more post-Order 66 plot lines, including the scourge of Vader and the formation of the Rebellion. But, overall, I'm happy with what we have.

It would be an interesting take on the story if it did start with episode III. Form the sound of it, it reminds me of the John Wick series. I still having the background / backstory of the slow turn to the dark side is important to the overall series.

If the cut scenes which revealed more of the courtship of Anakin and Pad-me would have been kept, then episode 2 would be the equal of 4-6. The problem I had with Episode 1 is that George insisted on using the new digital cameras, they were not close to the top level film cameras. George will be known as the film maker that brought movies into the 20th century with high tech fun sound. And he will be known for starting the digital film era. All the Prequel movies look much better these days than when they were released. The 4k version of A New Hope looks great. George created the demand and pull the industry with him. With THX Sound he actually had movie theater owners red faced angry. Viewer demands made them change. Disney KK and the rest better learn from the past soon or it will be sold off piece by piece.

I think if they skipped or combined 1 and 2 somehow with either flashbacks or timehops, they could have gotten a solid foundation for anakin. He would be very likeable and the clone wars series would have really hashed it out, as it did. Then episode 2 would be his downfall how we got it with ROTS but extended and not having so much of Nick Gillard's content chopped off. The new episode 3 could hash out Vaders further fall into darkness, getting his new red saber, and killing Jedi and running his inquisitorious. Insert Rogue One and then episode 4 to tie back to 1977 and we still get all the best of the prequels, more detailed story of vaders full turn and less of jarjar content!

Did my top 40 favorite movies of all-time recently and then I slimmed it down to 20 to save space on my Z Flip3 because I want to put Dreamcast ROMs onto it. Recent re-edit for today - 1. Back to the Future Part II 2. Back to the Future 3. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure 4. Maverick 5. Let it Ride 6. Casino 7. Goodfellas 8. Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood 9. The Big Lebowski 10. Hot Tub Time Machine 11. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels 12. The Shawshank Redemption 13. Elvis 14. Air 15. Kingpin 16. Dumb and Dumber 17. Some Like It Hot 18. History of the World Part I 19. Pulp Fiction 20. Django Unchained No Star Wars, MCU, Indiana Jones, and The Godfather made the cut. Mainly because I enjoy listening to my films while my phone screen is off. There are tons of action scenes in MCU, SW, and IJ, so I don't see them. Most of my favorites are geared towards comedy. Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit were tough cuts I had to make as well as Top Gun: Maverick which I watched 18x in the theater. Elvis did make my top 15 because I saw that 23x in the theater and since it's mostly Elvis music videos/concerts mixed together, it's highly listenable. I had tears coming out of my eyes from Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis. TG: M is a better version of A New Hope and The Force Awakens with no stupid planet killer. Sure, it's Navy propaganda like the 1986 original and there are some dumb Mission: Impossible moments in it. But it made me respect all military for sacrificing their lives for their nation and didn't try to be WOKE although it had a more diverse cast. The next 20... 21. The Hateful Eight 22. Jojo Rabbit 23. Thor: Ragnarok 24. There's Something About Mary 25. Dazed and Confused 26. Top Gun: Maverick 27. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 28. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 29. The Empire Strikes Back 30. Revenge of the Sith 31. Avengers: Infinity War 32. A New Hope 33. Return of the Jedi 34. The Godfather 35. The Godfather Part II 36. Forrest Gump 37. Captain America: The Winter Soldier 38. Wild Hogs 39. Dumb and Dumber To 40. Back to the Future Part III Damn, I love a lot of those movies from #21-#40. I consider The Godfather I and II to be the GOATs of cinema. I'm aware Wild Hogs and Dumb and Dumber To aren't well received but I still adore those films. There's tons of movies I enjoy whether they're considered good or bad by critics. Wild Hogs used to be high on my list and in my top 20. The Last Crusade used to be in my top 15. Revenge of the Sith or Infinity War? That's almost like a coin toss for me. I consider Infinity War the best MCU film ever made over the more overrated and bloated Endgame from it's deus ex machina time travel shenanigans. It's a better film than ROTS but I have some bias towards ROTS since I saw it 3x in the same week and it holds a little more emotional weight. I couldn't even include Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Easy A, Fanboys, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, The Forbidden Kingdom, Operation Condor, The Goonies, The Sandlot, Real Steel, 8-Bit Christmas, Home Alone 1 & 2, She's Out of My League, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, Enter the Dragon, Gladiator, Braveheart, Troy, or any Spider-Man or Batman film in my top 40. Yes, no to The Dark Knight. Nolan films can be so slow, boring, and confusing. I rarely have the urge to rewatch a lot of Christopher Nolan's films. The Prestige is my 2nd favorite Nolan film and it doesn't make my top 100. I enjoy The Lord of the Rings films but they actually won't make my top 100 favs either. I've seen them a few times which includes the superior Extended Editions and that's about it. It's a franchise that I admire but I'm not into it like I'm not into Harry Potter. I did enjoy Civil War and Endgame but being such a big Iron Man fan, I don't enjoy watching him lose or die in it. I saw both multiple times in the theater but they don't give me that urge to rewatch them. And The Avengers in 2012 was amazing when I first saw it but it has pacing issues and the designs of their costumes became dated. There are movies I first enjoyed when they first came out like Face/Off but didn't remain my favorite as time passed. My all-time favorite animated film is The Emperor's New Groove and then the more common answer: The Lion King (1994). Yet, no animated film makes my top 100. Not Across the Spider-Verse either. I'm already burnt out from superhero content. The only animated stuff I tend to rewatch are Family Guy, Futurama, and Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head. I prefer Family Guy from Season 2 through 4, Futurama's first 4 before Comedy Central and then Hulu, and the newer stuff for Beavis and Butt-Head. I went back to include Silicon Valley on my Z Flip3. And then I'm planning to put back Loki but in 1080p as I prefer it takes up the entire screen when played on the 1.9" cover display. Loki is the only MCU content for that phone. I'm aware Season 2 didn't receive scores as high as Season 1, but I absolutely adore the entire series. Everything from the characters to the music to the lighting is perfect. Natalie Holt needs to be applauded for her score. "He Who Remains", "TVA", and "Pruned" all sound epic. If Letterboxd asked me my four favorite films, it could change every day. Last night, it's Shawshank, Casino, Goodfellas, and BTTF2. Pulp Fiction used to be my No. 4 and Forrest Gump at No. 5 but they faded for me the last 8 years. Today, my four favorites are BTTF2, BTTF, Bill & Ted 1, and Maverick (1994). All I know is Back to the Future is my favorite IP of all-time. Way more rewatchable than Star Wars and MCU. I wouldn't love time travel content like Bill & Ted, Hot Tub Time Machine, and Loki without watching Back to the Future first. Griff Tannen: "Well! Since when did you become the physical type?"

I like what we got with the Prequel Trilogy, but I have been thinking a lot lately about what I would do next if I was in charge of Star Wars. After phasing out and/or canceling current Disney projects, I would (1) do a Darth Vader Duology that features Starkiller from Force Unleashed and (2) do an X-wing Rogue Squadron movie (series?) based on the novels by Michael Stackpole.

Pacing in The Phantom Menace is something I'd punch up a bit, so it can go from a slow AF story to something more urgent. Same for ATTACK OF THE CLONES and I would have aged up Anakin into a young man in his teens in EPISODE 1and a 6yr old with a sassy attitude, and I would have kept him and Padme keep contact after EP.1 so can get this relationship with Padme. I think these plus other tweaks would have made EP.1&2 a bit better.

My biggest problem with episode 3 (which seems to be everyone's favorite prequel but for me its 2) is that originally, leading all the way to the VHS release of Episode 2, we were told that Darth Vader killed all the Jedi (save obviously Obi Wan and Yoda who had to hide on back water planets). C3PO says it in a little "story so far" segment in the VHS release of Episode 2. I feel like everyone forgot about the fact that Anakin was hyped up to have been such a boss level Jedi that he was able to essentially wipe them out once he goes dark side. Then instead we got Order 66 which, while certainly cool, really did lessen the impact of Vader. An odd change. I feel like Hal Jordan has a better "Vader story" then actual Darth Vader.

Before the prequels were made many people thought that the new trilogy was going to be about Darth Vader and they assumed that it would include him and palpatine hunting down the Jedi. We didnt know at that time that most of his injuries came from one fight with Obi Wan. I thought that maybe the events of ep1 and ep2 could be condensed into one film and ep3 would be more about seeing Vader in the peak of his powers and it would take us closer to the start of the OT. But that may have been popular with fans of the OT, but it would not have been in keeping with the films being family friendly.

I honestly don’t think it would’ve bothered us that much. I mean yeah, we can say something about it NOW because we have the prequels already, but if they did do it that way, and they executed it very well, then it would’ve actually been better than the prequels. That’s the thing, you have to stay objective with things when you don’t know how they would turn out. You wouldn’t miss what you didn’t know was there in the first place. So I’m open to knowing how these would’ve played out.

I always like 2 and 3. The first one.. its not that I hate it.. its just I can do without seeing it usually. I know whats going on with it already and its a little jar jar overload for me. Even though I would say the probably one of the most rewatched saber fights I watch is duel of fates at the end of 1. I think the first trilogy was needed to happen on screen. Sure, I knew the before the movies lore that was changed around a bit but I knew the jist. But your average fan at the time? Not a chance. No youtube, no content creators, you either read those books and searched for those notes and tidbits on a terrible internet or rumor or you didnt know jack. So it was important to get it out to the masses. But it would have been really amazing to have a connecting trilogy between them with Lucus at the helm. One of those to be but not to be's things I guess.

Qui-Gon's death was really Ki-Adi-Mundi's fault. He immediately shut down the idea that Maul was a Sith, calling it an impossibility. He doesn't even give it one second of consideration, and it plants that idea of doubt into the heads of the rest of the council. He makes several other decisions like this throughout the clone wars that makes him partially responsible for some of the worst outcomes in the war. He was a horrible Jedi.

Here's my alternate take on the prequels based in part from what was known from the OT and EU in the 1990s: Episode I is Anakin in his prime, a bit older than 9 years old, but perhaps a little younger than Luke when we first meet him. If Anakin is 16, Padme can be 18 or 19 so the age gap isn't as severe as 9 and 14. Anakin is literally a navigator on a spice freighter and Owen and Beru are there. I like the idea of keeping Anakin as a slave when Obi-wan first meets him. Owen and Beru would be slaves as well. All three are 'liberated' by Obi-wan when the Jedi need to commandeer their ship to report on Intel to the Republic. The Clone Wars are already raging on, similar to the Galactic Civil War. The first movie would be about the Republic finding the enemy's cloning facitilites and shutting them down and set into the motion the ending of that conflict. Anakin would prove himself to be a Jedi candidate whereas Owen and Beru just want to settle down on Tatooine, removed from the conflict. Anakin feels betrayed to an extent and instead opts to help Padme, Obi-wan and the Republic. Episode II would start off with the Republic triumphant, but the galaxy in shambles. Palpatine would become prominent and his machinations would start to become more apparent for what he has planned. For those worlds who followed the plotting of the Old Cloning Masters, a New Order will be imposed. Meanwhile, Anakin and Padme are married secretly (closer to the beginning third of the movie). Palpatine begins to manipulate Anakin. It should be noted that this movie takes place something like 5 years from the first movie so Anakin is about 21-22. The end of the movie has Anakin become Darth Vader proper, suit and everything. Luke and Leia are born. Obi-wan actually tries to dialog with Anakin (a bit more than what we get in RotS which I was never really satisfied with), but to no avail. Rise of the Galactic Empire. Episode III has Padme on the run with the remaining Jedi defending her and the children (movie is set about 2 years since Episode II since Leia kind of needs to remember her mother and long term memory doesn't start kicking in until around 2 years of age). The Jedi are hunted down and killed off, Palpatine formally declares Empire and we get some of the classic Imperial designs from the OT. Believing Padme dead (until she actually does die at the film's end while holding Leia's hand at her bedside), Luke is delivered to Own and Beru on Tatooine. Obi-wan and Yoda go into exile. Is this better than what George wrote? probably not since he's the father of Star Wars whereas I am but an admirer. I'll never understand it as well the "Great Maker".
