Vandelay Industries was one of their best recurring references. The writers kept bringing it back sporadically in conversation over the years, and if you recall we got two final nods to the company: in the second to last regular episode, The Puerto Rican Day Parade, there's a scene where George and Kramer and Jerry happen to bump into each other in an apartment and must adapt their aliases to fool a realtor; and in The Finale, the judge presiding in the court room was named Arthur Vandelay. I looked it up, out of curiosity, and the name was created in the second episode of season 1 (The Stakeout). George and Jerry are trying to create a fictional friend to get out of something. The name Vandelay was just produced out of thin air--- there was no real person who inspired Larry David or the writers. The name Art Vandelay supposedly is heard mentioned in eleven episodes of Seinfeld. Man, this show's minutiae is amazing.
