I like how he pauses for a second to actually think about what he's going to say rather than just throw random or irrelevant information. It's why I think Jordan Peterson's way of speaking seems rather interesting. They both think before they speak even if you may agree or disagree with the end result, you can at least respect or understand their thought process behind what they said.

@Khal Rhaego Perfectionism is a bit of a problem a lot of the time. You should try finishing a complete project and having friends/strangers review your draft. Being a really hard critic on yourself will slow down the hope of completing something.

@@danmeadowsmusic Getting people to read and finish your drafts is honestly a heartbreaker. I understand time is something that can't always be spared so I don't expect someone to finish it all in one sitting. But any form of criticism or feedback is integral to the process so it feels pretty bad when you do get a bit of feedback here and in between, or even reserved criticisms. If anything, family, if you are fortunate to have any, are the best at providing feedback, at least in my experience. They lay it to you without holding back and will call you out. They'll actually take the time and I think that's precious.

I think the process of writing and rewriting affects the brain. It makes writers more articulate and concise. He probably also knows beforehand what the questions are going to be.

I’ve started on a lot of ideas as well and of course I’d like to finish them all but I can’t work on every single one of them at the same time. I was watching a video here on KZbin that a writer made on their channel(Writing With Jenna Moreci) and they said something that I found to be very helpful. I’m not sure which video it was exactly but they said that the way they choose which idea to write first is that they try to figure out which idea they most often think about. She also said that it’s probably the one that a writer is the most excited to write about or it may even be their favorite idea. I think about all of my ideas but of course there are some I think about more often. I hope this helps!

@QTee Do not write with the goal of having it on screen on the future rarely authors get the chance to present their work on screen write and focus on making people love what you write that's what I'm doing right now I'm not focusing on "oh would this be good on screen?" No I'm focusing on the success of my book and how people will love it. Jerry Jenkins I saw a video of him saying "Alot of us start out and say 'would someone actually read this?' That answer lies with you, if you're a fan of fiction read your own story and see any missing plot holes and fill them but always give the reader the element of question, for example write up a small story where the plot isnt well explained but somewhat explained and let the readers find the explanation themselves and question certain plot holes do not explain everything let them theorise and again this is all off topic so back to the main topic. Focus on the success of your book and focus do not think for the long term think of the short term look how many years george has been going until he got a TV show you might release the book tomorrow but end up getting a show or a movie about it in 20 years that's how it works it's really hard to do so. My story is fiction and whenever I'm writing I say "all of this is way above budget standards" because I go all out using my imagination to write. I think the hook of a story is one of 3 things. The first is a level of mystery that is not just something being unknown but also it being interesting. The second is an actual love for the characters and really wanting to be with them in a sense. And finally, the biggest of the bunch!! A NEED... For closure! That’s my theory.

I don’t feel like he’s been looking well and I don’t want to be selfish by saying I’m terrified he passes before finishing (unlike Jordan, Martin doesn’t want someone else to finish it), but I am worried about that because admire his work so much. However, he’s also such a great, interesting humble guy who came from poverty to become a famous author. Margaret Atwood, that's her...she said something like: "no one could possibly write if you didn't know your book would be read" or something...and Mozart supposedly said that he couldn't work on a piece of music unless he knew when it would be performed...now, I think he actually wrote some works without knowing that, some of his symphonies, perhaps even the 40th or something, I think he wrote two symphonies without knowing if they were going to be performed, let alone *when* they would be...so maybe what he did contradicted what he said...those symphonies might have been " within him", and he needed to get them out, as George R. Whatever small amount of cash he would make off of finishing the books can't compare to what he has made off the show so why bother? My money is on him going the same route as Robert Jordan. The only issue is Sanderson doesn't have the chops to finish Martin's work.

For anyone who keeps starting on different ideas, that means your other ideas weren’t good enough to begin with. If you, as the author and teller of the idea, lose interest in the idea...then you know it is a bad idea. Don’t force yourself to work on bad ideas, force yourself to learn from these ideas to make a good one. Bad idea doesn’t mean it is bad in general, but that you yourself just do not feel enough interest in telling it. I want to add something that Stephen King once said, not in exact quotes: A good idea comes back, you don’t have to write it down, a good idea just keeps invading your brain constantly telling you to write it. Finishing stories is hard, but just get a good idea and run with it. Success with writing everyone. :D

I agree, partly. I think there's so much discipline that comes with continuing and finishing something like writing that no matter how GREAT an idea is, it can be hard to motivate yourself to write more. Because it IS work. It's not so much about how the idea hooks you, but about being constantly inspired. The initial inspiration is a lot more potent than the work that follows. It's kinda like the high you get when you're first falling in love. You can fall in love with new people after, but it doesn't mean that putting in that work and intentionality to making a relationship with the first person work isn't actually worth it.

On the actual writing, yes, you need the discipline to write. Not necessarily. I think any idea can be made into at least a good, if not great, book, provided there is some craft to it. If you give up on anything that you lose interest in, it's likely you will never finish anything. Writing takes commitment, even for the biggest names. As for the King quote, he was talking about generating story ideas. It's quite possible to have an idea in your head that seem great, but want to give up in the writing process. It's exactly what was said in this video.

That ineffable quality martin is talking about, I call it "color." Or the sense of something feeling alive. The only arguably insightful thing I might have to say about it is I think it has a *lot* to do with authenticity of pace. Doesn't matter if it's fast or slow, if it always makes sense for the given moment then it grounds you. Second most important quality I think is spontaneity. It doesn't have to be real, but you have to remember that people exist to respond to the world around them.

I would have to watch the video again to put my finger on it and it doesn't seem fair watching someone to highlight their faults And must admit I read her books and they were a bit the same lol. I got through about 6 of them then sort of gave up, the story was engaging enough to want me to know what happened but I was underwhelmed by a lot of aspects. At the end of the day though she's the award winning author and I'm the bloke who made 20 quid on kindle direct

Most of Kings books are not series. They are usually stand alone. Sure he has a few series. Most of GRRM books are series. Wild Card, Asoiaf, dreamsongs. Etc. Those take time. He has to build a world with little inconsistency. And to make the world flow, have a timeline and a history and future.

Fire and Blood came out last year. He has another wild card short story. Plus he helped edit and write few excerpt in the text book; history of ice and fire. So yes he's been busy. He did say that he is focusing only on ASoIaF until winds is completed now

@@xVenomousOnex George is a screenwriter on top of being an author. Reading Game of Thrones and then the following books, it was clear to me how well it would translate to the screen. There was always something left unsaid or unfinished at the end of every chapter to keep you wanting more, just like a tv show. The goal of any profession is to make money. Don't be so naive. And once George landed the tv show he was pretty much set. Read ADWD if you haven't. The book is 90% filler. Literally nothing of importance happens for the majority of the book and a lot of it is just useless travelogue. And don't even get me started on Daenerys in that book. Her entire struggle was whether she wanted a good fuck or political power. It was nearly as bad as the crappy story arc between Perrin and Faile in WoT.

@@seamushawks2190 I've never had a harder time with a song of ice and fire book than ADWD. It was boring and uninspired and all of the cliff hangers from the previous book are simply drawn out and left unfinished. The book had almost no point to it. With every other book in the series, including AFFC, I couldn't put the damn thing down. With ADWD, I found myself having to force every paragraph and page. Just a major step down and it felt more like he just rushed it out because of fan pressure and then still left everything unresolved as a big "fuck you" to his fans. The book was basically yellow diarrhea from start to finish. In some cases, quite literally.
