One thing you see in all these nations, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, etc is that people fight back, the everyday average teacher, student, worker all come together to go against what they think is unjust in the government, that itself is freedom and what I respect so much about these countries. They may have empty wallets and rough history but yet they stride to be democratic, at least the people make them

I'm going to go in way more detail about other armenian issues here than is relevant to the georgian protests, but I feel like talking about it. As an american it's very difficult for me to come to terms with the foreign policy effects of my government, what with all our ridiculous and flat out evil interventions (wars) in the middle east, while at the same time feel that the only thing that brings me any hope towards the artsakh situation (not to mention the american and european arms keeping urkaine in the fight) is the impact of our politicians on pulling out armenia from its russian alignment. But this is totally racist to suggest that armenia is a weak country that needs to be "saved" in order to survive. Both sides of the political spectrum here act this way, when the left accuses the georgian protestors of being funded by the west in a color revolution as if they didn't have legitimate concerns with their government, and the right argues that the only reason europe has higher standards than us is because we are the ones who alone pay for the defense of europe. The only other thing that gives me hope is Ukraine, and the potential that maybe russia's dictatorial influence in the western balkans, the Caucasus, and elsewhere will significantly decrease when they are defeated. When I brief my friends on the dire state of the tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the most depressing thing is that if Azerbaijan decides to make the call on a full war, if it's only on artsakh than we (the west) will do nothing, but if it's on armenia then suddenly we may call Azerbaijan out for being just as evil as Russia is. As if the citizens of armenia are somehow more deserving of human rights than those of artsakh. It's depressing. but regardless of what happens, in the far future, I'm certain that there will be universal agreement on who the aggressor here was. it's Azerbaijan.

You may disagree, but I actually feel similarly about this situation as I do to the palestine problem. The primary difference is that Israel has not annexed the territory, which means that the statehood/autonomy of the palestinians has been all but completely destroyed, retained in a puppet-like fashion by Israel so as to argue that they're still on the side of international law. Otherwise, the same red flags are everywhere. Borders drawn by an outside power (British instead of Soviet), war, ethnic cleansing and destruction of cultural monuments, renaming of place names, violation of international law, blockade and restrictions of living space, geopolitical rivalries over the status of the "country", "both sides" this and "both sides" that, deliberate misintereptation of the facts by the occupying side, significant political influence by the occupying powers on other countries to prevent news reporting on the conditions inside, and so on.
@AkravHistory Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Though Azerbaijan does still occupy parts of sovereign Armenian territory (not Artsakh). That escalation was halted by US efforts, but perhaps more should be done to get them to withdraw their troops.
@AkravHistory Жыл бұрын
The main difference I see with the Israel/Palestine is that AFAIK Israel has offered Palestine a 2-state solution several times, which Palestinians always reject (I'm not familiar with the terms of those proposals, so perhaps understandably so). Whereas the Armenians in Artsakh, unlike Palestinians, do not deny Azerbaijan statehood or call for their destruction. I'm not supporting Israel here, but I find this makes Azerbaijan's approach more sinister than Israel's.

what's happening in Georgia can't be a lesson for Armenia, those countries despite being neighbourgs are on 2 cultural and civilisational sides. Georgia sits a the frontier of the occidental world, they are fully european, you go in Tbilissi you will feel like you are in a european city... poor one, but european noneless. They are pro EU and have a future in the EU... they have something that give them hopes and the will to fight and change, because they know they will be agragated with the EU. Armenia is fully on the middle eastern culture, even if there is some old russian building plu schristinanity that give you a european feel in some streets don't be fooled it's the middle east, they share some europeans values, but having values doesn't make you european... a good portion probably still the majority of armenians are pro russia, and those who are not can't do anything about it, what are they going to do? wave a EU flag in protest? a flag of a civilisation they don't belong into...they could be waving a chinese one for that matter... so there is no hope of something bigger and better to win for them... and it's terrible they are a middle eastern country bu completely surronded by ennemy nations, Turkey, azebaidjan... completely depending on Russia for their security... it's a complex tragedy, i don't see how Armenia is going to exist in the future, but it's getting complicated.
@chagenchakhbasian962 Жыл бұрын
What a bunch of nonsense. There is nothing European about Georgia. Especially after Sakashvilli left office. In freedom index Armenia scores better than Georgia. So to believe Georgia is European while Armenia is "middle-eastern" is just a braindead Georgian viewpoint. You're saying Georgia is comparable to Belgium while Armenia is comparable to Iraq? Lol, that's a good one. Armenia is growing much more rapidly than Georgia, especially in the tech sector and also has a trump card where it's diaspora can offer various professionals and experts. Armenia is basically a Balkan country, same as Georgia, stating that Armenia is middle-eastern is just hilarious. Only difference between the two countries is one is regretfully allied to the Russians, while the other is an enemy to the Russians.

Rubbish You treat your personal bs like its the absolute truth. Georgia is shooting to be part of Europe but it isn't fully European. It's a matter of their national opinion rather than who they truly are. Armenia is as much European as Georgia, even in its historic sense and significance. Georgia has almost as much Persian influence as Armenia has in its history. I am not sure what you mean by buildings, but anything European in Georgia was built in the last 20 years or soviet era, which shouldn't be mistaken for indigenousness to Europeans. If it wasn't for karabakh, Armenia too would have closer relations with Europe. Armenia has plenty of democracy that attracts people from none democratic states to visit amd live there despite posdible hardships. Yes, Armenia maintains close tues with Iran, but it's cultural inclination is directed towards West. Russia is necessary for Armenia's security from Azeri threat. Armenian history, location, and architecture is all part of a crossroads between Asia and Europe. Both locations play part in Armenian history, ancestry, and culture. Georgia's main advantage is its political edge, but Tiblisi didn't abandon its link with the soviets yet. Both Armenia and Georgia are hybrid democracies. This means they aren't true European democracies. Don't let the fancy glass buildings in Tiblisi fool you.
