Since the Z9 came out I said I loved it but not great for hikes and lots of running around. It was massive and I never liked vertical grips to begin with. Finally I get what I want, quality of the Z9 but better for carrying around day to day. And the video time limits don't bother me at all. Get some high quality clips and B-roll along with top notch Nikon raw files for photo editing. Preorder is in. I am done!

@@nickolasmazzara127 They will have to. The z6ii and z7ii are literally end 2018 tech. They really just have to put the new Xspeed 7 processor for better autofocus and then some enhancement like 10 bit internal video format. The rest is already very good, perhaps higher rez viewfinder as it doesn't have to be real speed camera.

There are a few things to consider when buying a Z8 if you are using a Z7ii. First off subject tracking is not available for stills anymore. I had my FN1 button near the lens mount set to subject tracking to swap from auto focus all points to a smaller box for picking exactly what I want focused on. It was simple, one button and done. That is no more on the Z8. They did introduce 3D tracking, which is a better focus mode BUT if you assign 3D tracking to the FN1 button you can not press it to swap in and out of the modes. You have to CONTINUOUSLY HOLD IT DOWN to stay in 3D tracking mode. Your other option is to use the new focus button on the button left side of the camera and use the sub-command wheel to swap modes. Instead of 1 button swap, not its a 2 finger adjustment. A big reason I wanted the Z8 for weddings was pre-release capture. But if you are like me and write raw to CF Express cards, and jpeg to SD as a backup, your pre-capture release are written to the SD card only, meaning you have to wade through all the files a second time to check for those pre-capture release files. This is so much of a pain in the ass I will likely not use the amazing feature. You need to modify A LOT of the camera's settings. I had to change about 25 different items when setting it up to fix things like not having a histogram in your eyelet or monitor. Also make sure you go into your custom controls and turn off the 'Lens control ring' in F3 or you will accidently change your aperture by accident when holding your lens.

Going over the white paper for N-Log the Log curve really only allows for a maximum of 14 stops of DR. I am curious if you used a better log, like ArriLog if you would return a better DR result. Simply decode the N-RAW as linear use a Color Space Transform to convert the Linear to ArriLogC3 or Log3g10 maybe and see if there's anything to be gained that way over the N-Log in the 2:1 DR range?
@robertulrich3964
@robertulrich3964 Жыл бұрын
its possible since its 12 bit(if the cmos sensor can resolve it and the log curve actually supports it, similar to slog2 which cannot resolve more than 14 due to the curve itself. note: some of the linear to log may actually be partially debayered so unrecoverable. and noise is always going to be a factor. also, the arrilog lut does rolloff saturation at the top 1% so that may not give you results you want if you need max sat at highest luma.

I had a professor in college who you remind me of. He taught a course in the history of the middle east & was one of the top 3 experts in the world on ancient near eastern Semitic languages...one of only a tiny handful of people in the world who could translate Egyptian hieroglyphs, Sumerian & Akkadian. He talked at a pace like you do, & from the time he started till he finished his lecture, you wrote as fast as you possibly could or you used a tape recorder..the downside being that you had to then take notes off that & invest a 2nd hour outside of class just for that. I averaged 150 pages of handwritten notes for a test & even condensed to basic phrases I'd have nearly 100 pages. I worked my ass off for a B in that class. I listen to you because you're an information fire hose. In all honesty, I have to run every full video back half a dozen times & roll back individual clips more than that just to conceptualize all this information. Full disclosure...I learned to shoot in the analogue era so this is a steep learning curve. What kind of coursework do you offer...if you do?

Hi Gerald -- good work -- very good vid and advice. I assume you used the ProGrade Cobalt 650GB for all your tests in ~20ºC. Big takeaways for me -- when a heat limit has been hit a cool down down of 5-10 mins allows same max record time to be achieved -- replacing card/battery or starting a new recording extend the duration but heat also needs to be managed. Anyone seeking to use a Z8 on a production should perform their own tests to understand the operating limits of their gear. Placing a Z8 in a rig/cage, adding a lens, pulling LV feed to an external monitor, and powering with a d-tap from a v or gold battery will all change the performance "a bit" - so set up the camera how you would use it and test. some cards run hotter and others cooler - obviously source appropriate cards for your work -- and if thermal limits are a concern then invest in the coolest running -- it would help if your provided some tests to explore this. Do hot cards drop frames or just record until the camera shuts down? My own favourite CFE-B cards are the Delkin Black 650GB, Sabrent Rocket CFX Pro 2TB and Angelbird AV Pro Mk2 4TB. I find these run cooler than others. One has to be very careful with which codex/format one uses when storing to the UHS-II SD card slot - the fastest and coolest card I could find is the 518GB OWC Atlas S Pro V90 - I will test this but I expect that only H265 and H264 can be saved to it. Hopefully when my Z8 arrives I will find out later today. I take your guidance wrt ProRes 422 HQ being your preferred/recommended codex - I assume that you are in N-log. Like most I have recorded a lot of 8.3k60p HQ N-RAW N-LOG on the Z9 and it just runs and runs producing TB and TB of files. With a smaller body camera one has to make reasonable compromises -- like not planning to shoot endless footage of the highest codex fps possible, just because one can !!

You NEED to use Assimilate Scratch to calculate the real dynamic range of the Z8, you get so much more than in davinci resolve, it's almost like BlackMagic design is limiting Nikon raw footage dynamic range... use the hightlight recovey tool and even the expose setting of the .NEV format it has nothing to do compared to Davinci...

yep, they chose a more contrast look to burry the shadows (noise), it hampers the synthetic benchmark. But when you see real life test (latitude) in the cineD lab test, it is actually better than most camera, at least half a stop better than the A1, at least 1 above the Canon R5c. It is very close for example to the Canon C70 with its dual gain sensor.

The cobalts run pretty cool but the Delkin Blacks seem to run even lower: 15F/8C lower. I'm curious if that difference translates into longer record times because the card is basically a heater plugged into the core of the camera body. I have both the Z8 and Black card on order and will look into it. I don't shoot long clips but I do sometimes shoot video in 80-100F environments and probably at that 8.3K60p

Hi, can I ask what's your opinion on the best CFE card for the Z8? I've been using XQD for sometime and I'd like to get a CFE card, but I'm unsure what to get. I've heard good things about the Sony TOUGH cards, but there are so many options out there. Just wondering what users with first-hand experience think about this. I've definitely heard good things about the Cobalts, too. If you could have any card, which one would you pick?
@AffinityPhoto
@AffinityPhoto Жыл бұрын
@@HaggenKennedy I’m only researching currently. It seems to depend heavily on what you plan to do. Most of them seem fine for photography. The more expensive ($1.50/GB+) are more capable at handling the highest bit-rate (raw) video files and deep buffer photo shooting like action subjects. The tough card reviews I’ve seen say that the temps get hot quick and the card throttles the speed significantly. The delkin and cobalts seem to be the best. The Angelfire line seems to have fitting issues (Z9 second slot) and non-existent-warranty headaches.
@HaggenKennedy
@HaggenKennedy Жыл бұрын
@@AffinityPhoto Indeed, that's what I've been getting as well. I think I'll probably go with a Delkin Black. Out of all the cards I've researched, it seems to be the one with the lowest number of issues and also the most well-balanced (read/write speed, dependability, ruggedness, physical dimensions, does not run too hot, etc.). It seems to check all the boxes, and even if it's not the fastest card on the market, I don't care so much because I am a landscape photographer, so that is not an issue for me (and yet, it's fast & reliable enough to not hinder me on the odd occasion I need to shoot something else). It also comes with a lifetime warranty and a 48h replacement turnaround, which can't hurt. Seems like a good deal, and I'll probably get one.

@@raynerp Thanks, Rayner. Indeed I've seen a few videos that attest to what you said. However, I've also seen a number of people complaining about the physical dimensions of the card, which apparently makes it get suck in the camera's card slot. Agreed on all points. Lets no pretend shall we? The Z8 is one of the best hybrid body in the world today. It does everything well. With continous firmware updates that Nikon practices, it won't be long before it gets " pre capture raw" and RED video algorythm. Yes, others like R5II,A9II,AR7V are equal to the task as well. We live at the time when photographers are the ones benefiting progress in technology. The deficit is we ourselves. We need to embrace it, learn about it and cherish the moments using them. To me, Nikon did great justice to the D850 by introducing its mirrorless counterpart

Also, I didn't quite get there about nikon n log monitoring. Is there some kind of option live view assist which shows rec 709 version of your image? Can you upload your own rec 709 luts? Can we agree that all this overheating thing for this camera is not such a big deal if you record many short takes and shoot regular stuff for example: events, commercials where camera doesn't need to take long takes and there are enough time between the takes? Can you record video eventually longer if you power the camera from PD source thus avoind hot battery warning? If you could answer these questions everyone would be happy :) Thanks.

The applications the Z9 was designed for, like action, sports, and wildlife, you’d want a vertical grip. To use the Z8 instead, you’d need to install the accessory grip which increases the cost, and makes the Z8 even bigger than the Z9. Plus you have the drawbacks of one SD slot and poorer battery life. I guess if you don’t need to take advantage of the Z8’s stellar AF performance like for landscape or product photography, it doesn’t really make sense because the Z7 series can handle those applications for a lot less money than the Z8.

Great video! I love the level of depth you get into. When you're doing the H.264 tests, are you testing the default profile only, or do you poke around at Nikon's custom colour profile settings at all? I don't know about the Z8/9, but in the Z5/6 there is a "High ISO NR" setting in the video menu, and I'm not convinced "off" is fully off. There's also a "manage picture control" page with 3 separate sharpening filters and a 'clarity' slider, all of which are cranked pretty high by default.

@@epicimages5583 I wrote this for someone else. I was quite puzzled by how the only Z9/z8 video with a Sony sensor has such a lower DR in video. I made some research and it was quite enlighting. I would recommend anyone about the video DR of the z9 (Z8 should be very close), To check the Cine5d lab test. No big surprise when you check the synthetic Imatest benchmark which is about same as here, that is strangely the Nikon/Sony sensor scores quite lower than for example the Sony A1. But once you check the real life latitude test, the result are quite stunning. It scores at least half to a stop higher than the A1. At least 1 perhaps 1.5 above the R5c and more surprisingly Red Komodo. A very generous 4 stop above and 4 below, and if you push a little bit it could go half a stop in both highlight and shadows. www.cined.com/nikon-z-9-n-raw-lab-test-fw-3-00-rolling-shutter-dynamic-range-and-latitude/ Thats Sony A1 www.cined.com/sony-a1-lab-test-rolling-shutter-dynamic-range-and-latitude/ Canon R5c www.cined.com/canon-eos-r5-c-lab-test-rolling-shutter-dynamic-range-and-latitude/ It would be very close to the Canon C70 with its dual gain sensor with 9 stop of latitude www.cined.com/canon-eos-c70-lab-test-with-the-raw-update-rolling-shutter-dynamic-range-and-latitude/ Those test are very interesting as the likes of Alexa ARRI ALEXA Mini LF confirm they are clearly above the rest with a conservative 10 stops of latitude while other results are astonishing as the Komodo, or Sony Venice which are below what you would have expected. I think the problem with Nikon Imatest result is about its log implementation, that is they went for a more contrast look that cut the shadows so that it doesn't look too noisy contrary to others.

It seems that if you already owned a Z9, you'd likely be quite upset with the sudden extra depreciation 😂 Kudos to Nikon for "self cannibalising" in a way that is good for the consumer though. I assume they need to make such actions in order to gain some ground, and by the presales stats floating around it seems they've succeeded! The overheating stuff is quite disappointing really. Having useed an S1H since launch and now having an S5ii, it seems like a no-brainer to put active cooling in hybrid shooting bodies. 12:34 - Excellent Goose action

the thing is tho both the Z9 and Z8 are pretty cost efficient and once you add on the extra grip and battery and stuff on the Z8, it makes up the price difference but Z9 still definitely is a more superior camera but not as accessible to the prosumer as this one
@tjrsasea

Most folks wont really record continuously for that long at such resolutions for the camera to overheat. Those that do need to record that long continuously would be better off with a dedicated video cam. This is a hybrid cam targeted at hybrid shooters who do not usually record so long at one go :)

@@_zakkus is not accessible for prosumers as this one???? you make it sound like Z9 cost $55,000. The percentage cost difference between Z8 and Z9 is not that great.... $1500... the price of a decent camera lens.

Hi, i have a few questions about nikon raw editing in DaVinci resolve. I hope you will find time. Thanks. 1. What is the difference between nikon raw sdr and nikon raw log? 2. When setting the paramater of a clip, shot in 12 bit raw sdr, in DaVinci raw panel, 'decode using' is set to clip 'colour space' is set to rec.2020 And when i set the 'gamma' to Nikon N-Log the SDR footage starts looking exactly like a video shot in log. I want to know what is this behavior? Is resolve really interpreting the raw sdr video as raw log video?

Gerald, I could use your help. I have a lot of Nikon Z Cameras and Z Glass. Ihave been waiting on the Z8, and may buy the body. Looking in better AF than the Z6 and Z7. Also the 4k 120 interests me. But now I am also looking at the Sony ZV-E1 and then pairing that with a G master lens.. I am 90 percent video. And looking for high quality AF and video. Also the flip out screen would be handy on the Sony. Which body would you recommend?

Hi Gerald I have 3 questions for you. 1. You mentioned the camera had 2 ISO bases, what are they? 2. When recording to an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja V/V+ what's the highest output resolution and frame rate combination? Can it output 4K @ 120 fps over HDMI? 3. Can the Z8 record to internal media while simultaneously outputting a 10 bit signal over HDMI ? I ask because I own a Nikon Z6 II and it cannot do a backup recording to the internal media while outputting to the external recorder. As always my guy, great review and thank you for not shitting on Nikon as most other KZbinrs do. :)

I can tell you from my experience with the Z9, that the second base ISO for video is 4000. I was amazed when i found this out and it was easy to grade with practically no noise. I've only tested this with NRAW however.

@@davidgfisher thanks for the info. Really nice to know that they are already working with some firmware updates. What he said in the video, is they're working out to change the Base ISO for N-log to 200ISO, which is really nice to have. Probably they should keep the 4000 dual-iso. The hardware is all there, they just need to be more bold with software and UI changes and give us more options. DCI, 6K, Open gate would be great to have.
