They left out the last part of this scene...which was James telling his friend to make sure his mother was taken care of and had whatever she needed. That, was the important part of this scene. That he didn't show her any love in person because she abandoned him...yet, he STILL looked out for her.

So many people have died young and old and it's a sad and hurtful experience,especially if you loved him. But to call Boseman a king? I think if her were to hear that people esteemed him to that degree,almost deifying him, that he would been respectfully appalled. Definitely a talented actor and appeared to be a decent human but not meriting this level of "worship."

This scene was steeped in layers of emotion. Her confession of ignorance, abuse, and fear are real plagues that poison our own families. It is sad that she could not give him what he needed, and that she never got what she needed to pass it on to him. She did love him, she was proud of him. Unfortunately, the unhealed wound of abandonment is hard to repair. It's not the fate of every family, but sometimes pain takes a lifetime or two to detox the poison. Maybe James Brown & his Mother will get to enjoy a New Life together in a different way. In a life where they do not have to survive harsh environments soaked in poverty and abuse.

She was beaten, and abused, down trodded her whole life, the woman clearly did not devlope coping skills. She was wrong for sure for leaving her son to fend on her own. Weather you want to admit it or not, many poor blacks was not "House on Beacon Street" They tore each other down; But the black family is and has been torn apart through slavery. Even a the lowest slave wants to be king in his castle. To be a black woman back then and now is not easy. Back then, Black men learned discipline by being beat so they beat. Its not so easy to dismiss her, if James was better than her he would have taken care of her-not stoop to her level. Always honor your mother and father even if they are bad, it would been a great lesson for his children. They cycle of distruction and hate must top in the black family.

I understand this scene and side with James Brown. How you gonna leave and then expect everything to be okay? Parents don’t know how much they mold their kids personality. Don’t get mad, talk to family, or pray to god for your failed decisions in your child life. You wonder why they don’t come around!
@Artisan1979

RIP Chadwick. Such a powerful scene. You could really feel James restrained anguish at his mother. But it takes the last few words from her that aren’t in anyway laced with outrage or despair. Those are the words that make him break down the most. I think it’s the first actual time to see the character breakdown and literally collapse under the strain of years of pain and sadness and anger. He wanted answers, and yet weighed his words for years what he would say to his mother. Her reasons were bullshit, but you could see that James partially for gave her because that much pain was not worth carrying. Yet she still made it tainted by obviously being there for money. Some things are never completely resolved or straightened out. Some things are just left broken. It is truly tragic when he went through and how it molded him into the man that he became. A truly powerful performance overall.

That was a great comment but do you think when women are being abused, they’re just trying to get away and sometimes thinking about your kids isn’t possible in the moment. Now it makes total sense why James Brown abused women the way he did bc he had such a hatred for his mother.

I sympathize with her and James honestly and to dovetail with your point I understand that historically women in the US have been treated more like pack animals than an equal partner, and at the time James was a child it was even worse than nowadays which is still pretty fucked up( abortion laws and wage disparities), because the laws were literally written to enforce that situation. Women couldn’t own property, divorce, or control their own finances or bodies when it came to birth or abortions. It was even worse for black women, because they had two strikes against them from the start; the color of their skin and being a member of a gender that had no rights whatsoever.
@pugachevskobra5636
@pugachevskobra5636 Жыл бұрын
I’m not even saying she should’ve done that; I’m simply saying I understand why she made the decision she made at the time; it was obviously very painful for her. Fast forward 70 years to our day and multiple states have passed legislation to strip women of their autonomy when it comes to their bodies. The same is not true for men.

she left him w his abusive father then pretended she didn’t know him later when they crossed paths. she had no right to feel proud of a child she more than likely never wanted, nor to cry when said child wasn’t interested in rekindling their relationship.

Amazing that this scene came at the end of the movie after Bobby told him off for being a prick and saying he's alone and always has been. He wants to have a mother, friends, people he can rely on etc. which is why his lips parsed and he breaks down onto the chair when she tells him he's handsome in the same way a mother would to a son she's proud of. His mom was talking to him like he always wanted but he just couldn't accept what his parents did to him. This is explains why he's the way he is and does it so beautifully

I don’t think I would ever understand parents who claimed that what they did such as leaving the child in an abusive household was best for the child. No the parent did what was best for them because it wasn’t nothing to grab him and take him with her. Then to top it off you come back for money as if he owes you smh.

Reading the comments outs amazing how many people missed this entire point of this scene. Shame. This was powerful and spoke to the black American experience in ways no other race will ever understand. Brilliantly portrayed.

Powerful scene in itself but you can't just bring it done to being black. Man believe it or not that happens to whites, Mexicans and I'm native American myself and I dealt with the same thing. I was doing go and my mom came for a hand out. I'm just trying to let you know that you can put stuff like this situation to black folk. It just happens. And before your reply just know I was raised by a black man. And still learnd my native culture and knew how to act around the white folk
