@jeromeinen79122 ай бұрын
Sad that on the one occasion Nastase was totally right getting angry, he did not get justice. When Pohman was treated for his injury, he should have left the court and conceded the game. It was always the rule that you can not be treated or ask injury time during the game, only in the pause between the uneven games. ‘Play must be continuous’. The umpire made a mistake by not calling the game for Nastase two times.

This rule with injury treatment only being possible at changeovers was in effect back then. This has changed about 25 years ago. Nowadays you can be treated whenever you want, also during a service game without any punishment or losing a point. For instance Stefan Edberg was treated during his last official match at the Davis Cup final 1996 against Frenchman Pioline, also while the service game was still in progress.

Nastase was completely disconnected from tennis by that time. After Wimbledon 1976 he had no interest at all for the circuit, but curiously enough, when he played an invitational with big prize money, he rejuvenated. Then he was very professional for his sponsors and televisions and all that stuff, he was once at the top of the rankings and then monetized everything, his bad behaviour on court and his night life gave him more money and popularity. If you look at the video, furious as he was, he didn't forget to give the german shoes box to someone in the crowd

The reason Nastase could do whatever he wanted is because there were no rules against any of that back then. Nobody had ever acted like that, so there were no rules. It was after him, Connors, and McEnroe that rules and penalties started to be created and imposed.

Nastase's Claim Backed Later, Nastase's charge that the match should have been forfeited to him when Pohmann was unable to continue to play immediately was considered a justifiable one by Charles Hare, the tournament referee. “Yes, Nastase was absolutely correct in claiming a forfeit,” Hare said. There was a stoppage of play when Pohmann did not immediately resume his position because of cramps, and that goes against the rule stating, ‘play shall be continuous.’ “But where the doctor appeared from, I have no idea. I have issued instructions to everyone that this is not to happen again. There is to be no aid given to players who have suffered from a natural loss of physical condition such as cramps.”

I read through the comments -wow, so many opinions here. In my humble opinion Nastase was way out of line and should been sent to a psychologist for anger management. Whether Pohmann was faking his cramps or not - look at his serve. He did not serve out of his legs at all after that and simply rolled in first serve after first serve. But you can' t deny either of these two players bags of skills to handle tennis balls with those kind of rackets with such elegance but also whipp down a passing shot when it was needed to. I remember the worst matches back then and actually ever in tennis history were between Nastase and Connors - they always looked like about to get into a boxing match.
