I love seeing the chickens out of their fence. They're really happy with room to roam beyond the fence. Reminds me of my grandmothers farm. Can't wait for the pigs to get out. And Nora really energized the rest of the herd. They were jumping around like doelings!

The most important beekeeping tool you can have is a good electric fence. I kept upwards of 50 hives just across the border from you in Maine and would occasionally have hives destroyed by black bears because of a fence failure in a remote bee yard or (once) in my home yard because of no fencing. I just lost the one hive that I had been keeping when I moved to this homestead in PA. The neighbor said he never seen a black bear here so I left the hive sitting unprotected only one night and was putting up the fence the next day. (I live next to a state park.) By dawn, there was splintered boxes left and a trail of broken frames leading back into the forest. In only takes one night with a gentle breeze to tell the bears the buffet is open.

The wonderful bee hives y'all built will soon have occupants. Best wishes on your bees being healthy and happy in their deluxe accommodations. It was such a joy to see sweet Nora jumping around, and then the older goats as well. I noticed that blossom and Willow were butting heads frequently when they first re-greeted each other. Hope as usual avoided the fray. She is such a docile lady. God Bless

Fascinating watching the bee hive being assembled! When I finally settle on my homestead, I'm thinking of growing about 30 grape vines and raising bees, along with other plants and trees. We're waiting for permission to move out of state with my hubby's corporation. Let's hope they agree, cause I already know the exact place I want to buy and make my forever home.

We have had two swarms of bees in our yard this year. In my 47 years I have never seen a wild swarm of bees and this year I seen two. The fist swarm was gone as fast as they came. The second swarm stayed on our firewood stack long enough for a local bee keeper to come and get them. The bee keeper didn’t charge us anything to remove the swarm, but I learned through speaking with him he liked bourbon, so I gave him a bottle for his trouble, plus a few cigars.

Al, I have learned so many building tips and tricks from watching your videos...things you don’t even talk about, it’s just how you build, and most of us wouldn’t know these things by receiving a kit with instructions...it takes watching you work to see the tricks to make a project enjoyable and successful....Thank you and “Many Blessings for your Homestead” and “Here’s to many years of future watching🥂!!!!!”.....It will be fun see the progress and watching Livi grow-up.....tooo...❤️🐝🌻

Hi! If you have the chance, research Housel positioning...it has to do with the up Y and down Y in the bottom of the cells on your comb...all of them need to be facing the same direction from center, I believe it's down Y towards the outside. It's super easy to identify, then you just mark the top of the frames with a line to keep track. It helps them protect their colony and get rid of pests easier...it also prevents burr comb and that all leads to less aggression overall. Super easy and makes a huge difference in handling them. I'm excited for you!

Good luck with your hives! I have issues with yellow jackets, as they ravage my hives every year. Have to use robber screens. Also, I use plastic "rite-cell" and cut into 3/4inch starter strips that I nail to top of frames. Bees draw the rest with natural comb. Then you can cut out the old comb after a few years and pressure wash for reuse.

Loved todays vid. I've often seen bee hives but you don't often get the chance to see the frames being made, that was interesting to watch. Noras first day with the ladies was great, her frolicks got infectious with all of them. What is it about a happy sideways hopping baby goat that just makes you smile and take away any worries for a brief moment, thanks for that. Your lip looks really sore. When you explained previously how you'd done it it actually made me wince, I bet you were sthunned when it happened. It could have been so much worse though, either teeth damage or a head injury. Glad you seem to be healing, but still makes me wince to see it and think about what happened. As usual, love to the whole fam, human and fluffy!*!

Good Morning Al, Did you know that you do not have to have foundation in your frames. The bees will draw it out on their own. Also, the foundation you buy from the bee supply companies, the wax that is used is a mix of wax from Commercial bee keepers and contains chemicals from when they treat their hives with insecticides and antibiotics. You can simply add a small amount of bees wax to the underside of you frame to encourage comb draw out. Go to www.abbottsustainablefarms.com/ for some great information from the Apiary page. Have a great day.
