Even more interesting is the fact that Bihar and Bengal have almost similar cuisines, tastes and culture. Bihar was a part of Bengal and was called its Lower Province. Even after it got separated, the influence and presence of Bengalis, mingled with the beautiful native Mithila, Bojhpuri and Magadhi traditions creates a potpourri of cultures and foods. Bihar has as many Bengalis as Kolkata has Biharis! Roads are named after Bengali Doctors, advocates--which is a reminiscence of the old memories of Bengal that has remained with Bihar even today. Phuchkas, singharas, ghooghni, chana dal, pulao, the huge Durga Puja festivities in Bihar, combined with the land's native traditional and ancient festivities like the Chhath Puja, and so many other common links create an over-lapping feeling of being in Patna, while being in Kolkata and vice versa! Tried the receipe today. Turned out delecious. Thanks for detailed instruction which really helped the perfect ghugni. The only thing missing for me were the coconuts, but still turned out fine.
