My missus and I sat on a Child Protective team for three years. What we found was social workers who were willing to overlook anything, and check any box, to put these kids back with their parents, no matter how dysfunctional those "parents" were, and no matter how much evidence there was of their dysfunction. Parental rights ALWAYS took precedence over protecting the kids, although no one would actually say that. In my experience, Family court is a racket made of attorneys, judges, parenting evaluators and psychologists who conspire to keep everyone in the circle busy and well employed. The welfare of the kids isn't even on the radar.

Laws need to be passed. I think there clearly aren’t enough placement options for the amount of abused and neglected children. Dog rescues tend to be much more careful than this with who can adopt one of their dogs. Mr. Montgomery had a nice source of income while he tortured a child with severe special needs. Imagine if she could have found a carefully screened home with educated, experienced, caring and dedicated caregivers. That’s what kids deserve.

Thank you for providing your speculations on cases like this one, there are others. Please look into the death of Thomas Valva, an autistic boy in NY who with two brothers was taken away from his immigrant mother, and the system kept her from her children and the special care they required. Custody was granted to his police officer father Michael Valva, who with his wife seem to have systematically tortured the three boys. Michael and his wife have been charged with murder, looking into the case it is clear the system played a pivotal role in the death of Thomas Valva. May justice be served, and those complicit and blind to the suffering of children be held accountable!

The Thomas Valva Case is another failure and after the death of the abused autistic boy, the judges are still making it hard on the mother with no record to get her two surviving kids back. I believe the father and step mother used the kids for child support and weaponized the court by the abusers, father being a cop I believe helped him get custody of those kids....even with a murdered child the fact the bio mother is constantly dragfed by the courts / cps only is an example again how the system does not work in the best interest of kids.

I'm a retired mental health social worker who first worked with kids and later in my career, moved onto the adult system. My experiences with child protective services aka CPS......let's just say I have nothing nice to say. CPS workers were incompetent, didn't know the laws regarding children/adolescent, didn't know about mental health issues, and just plain didn't give a rat's ass. For example, I received a report from CPS requesting an intake into the CA system. Per the report, it was a mother and her 2 sons, both enrolled in school, no learning difficulties, lived in subsidized housing where the apartment was clean and the mother was an appropriate caretaker. The reality was, the apartment was infested with roaches, rotten food on the floor, dog feces all over, the 2 kids shared a mattress on the floor that was soaked with urine, all had lice, the kids had severe learning disabilities as well as ADHD and so on. Another case I had were CPS intervened was when they removed a pre-teen girl from a stable environment with her grandparents and placed her with a cousin who was a gangbanger and did meth. Two months later, the girl was dead - shot in the head by the cousin's drug dealer boyfriend. He thought she had stolen his stash. And the list goes on. I'm sure there probably were CPS workers who were competent, but in my years of working with kids, I never met one.

That's a slippery slope. It should be very hard to take children away from their parents. Obviously an extreme cases it has to be done but be careful what you wish for do you really want to live in the world or someone could have their kids taken away for let's say decide to homeschool them and bring them up with an alternate ideology like living off the grid or not trusting the government? A case can be made that that is harming a child. I would say the majority of society probably doesn't believe in capital punishment so should we take away someone's kid for spanking them? No matter where you draw the line you're going to draw it across somebody's feet and who is to determine who's right and who's wrong?

@@Cafeallday222 my wife wouldn't be here if she hadn't been taken away from her birth mother but I can see where he can become a very slippery slope. If you use safety of the child as an excuse to remove the child where does the safety of the child line lay? Obviously these pieces of s*** in this story should never have had children. But what if I decide that I want my child to be healed by traditional tribal medicine men instead of going to a doctor? What a religious reasons I decide to keep my children home in homeschooled and teach them our traditions which may Clash with broader societies? I have a cousin who moved to Arkansas onto a Hundred acre ranch to live off the grid now his kids are grown but say that they were teenagers living with it is that child abuse? I know a progressive lady who I used to work with felt like you should be able to take away someone's children if you had racist beliefs, is that okay? And if you can take away that person's kid for the racist beliefs under the understanding that they will poison the young child's mind why not take away the person's kid who doesn't believe in evolution or raise their children to believe in the power of prayer instead of Western medicine? What if I don't want to raise my kids to believe that there are more than two genders? Or don't allow one of my kids to express his gay or transgender? Are those examples of child abuse? What about somebody who's vegan enforces their children to be vegan is that child abuse? So I'm agreeing that sometimes in extreme cases children should be taken away from their parents but where do we draw the line and what people is it acceptable to say f*** you you don't get to raise the your kids the way you see fit too?

Thank you Dr Grande for being a advocate for Harmony. Something that was lacking during her time on earth. She was not only a victim of her father but also a tax payer supported system meant to keep her safe. Every time I see her cute little bespectacled little face I’m gripped with deep sadness. Having raised two daughters I would have given everything and anything to have the chance to welcome her into my home. With bedtime stories and playing silly games, she would have been so welcomed and given the love that as a mother of adult children I still have room in my heart for another child.

As a resident of NH, this story was prominently in the news for so long, we had to know it would end very badly. So heartbreaking on every level. If a violent, criminal biological father is seen as a better solution for placement than the foster care system, it is obvious the system is completely broken! I hope the judge who awarded Adam custody, and the lawyer who never advocated for Harmony, never get a good night's sleep for the rest of their lives. As so many "conservatives" lobby for less support for mental health, Healthcare in general, welfare, government involvement, etc, and funds to support those departments are cut to the bone, we can expect more innocent victims like Harmony. I have a loved one that is locked up in the same jail as Adam Montgomery and has been there the whole time he's been there, they were even in the same unit for a while and the things I've heard are truly disturbing and just makes me so upset! He obviously denies having anything to do with his daughter and a lot of people say he comes off like a normal person and is funny and very likeable. Apparently, who the hell knows why, all the girls love him there, the nurses, C.O's, and staff all think he's cute and nice and they all treat him really well like one of their favorites.. 🤮🤬 which I personally find absolutely sick and twisted. And now the jail has him in protection so all the guards are keeping him safe just in case and are really nice to him.. I couldn't do it, I would lose my mind on that waste of space, sorry excuse of a human. Oh and a little insider info on the case.. I know they haven't released any info on finding her remains yet but back in summer when the FBI did that big search of their old apartment and took the fridge and then announced the case to be a homicide case.. what they didn't put in the news was they also dug up a part if the street and into the sewer system and put up big blocking walls around where they were working. Not sure exactly what it means just thought it was curious. People at the jail I guess somehow knew the search was going to happen before it did, which I also find weird.

She repeatedly LIED to family about Harmony, telling them that she was in regular contact with the child and that Harmony was fine, when in fact she had not had any contact with her child for TWO YEARS! And she knew what kind of man Adam was, she knew the child was in harm's way. Crystal only called police when her son's adoptive parents forced the issue.
