You can also do this starting with dry hair dampened/saturated with a water/Aloe Vera juice filled spray bottle. If you give it a try, let me know how you get on! :)

Thank you! Yes, isn't it great how versatile and robust it is? We leave the 1st stretch in for almost a week, Then I'll do a 2nd stretch overnight, if I want a super stretched style for the weekend. The video gives minimum times for those only wanting to stretch, but not wear the actual style. Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to comment. :) x

Thank you! It all depends on the length and thickness of your daughter's hair. Just to give you an idea, Part 1 took about 35mins to do my oldest daughter's hair and about 45 to 50 mins to do my youngest/s hair an you can wear that for a week. Part 2 is even quicker and took about half the time. I think you'll enjoy African threaded styles because they look good for 1-2 weeks. :).

My mother used to do this to my hair every 2 to 3 weeks when I was younger, and i would sit there in front of the tv, head resting on her knees.. My mom took good care of my hair.. I grew up and got lazy with my hair :( this is lovely, you take good care of your daughters hair.. Took me down memory lane, and I got all emotional lol.. Thank you for reminding me!!

I'm so glad you round it helpful! How long it takes depends on the style you do, hair length, thickness and texture. To do this style on my oldest daughter's hair took about 35 mins. My youngest was more like 45-50 mins. Let me know how you get on if you give it a try :).

hello @ the end of the video you mentioned how you battle hair reversion but I don't see the video:(
@Cindy99765
@Cindy99765 9 жыл бұрын
You can battle hair reversion by not getting it wet. (avoid humid places, stay out of rain, and don't wash) But of course you'll have to wash hair eventually, which is why this style should only last about 1 - 2 weeks

That's a good question! I've not tried it on locs, but I would imagine, if you are able to stretch locks with other methods, then you would definitely be able to do it with threading. I would try it on a small section first and see if you like the results. Make sure to dampen hair first and don't remove until completely dry. Be sure to come back and let me know if you try it. I'd love to know how it went. :)

:D, too funny! :). I grew up with African Threading, as a way of stretching all my life, and thought most people knew about it. I realized this wasn't the case when people would asked if the girls were biracial (?!?!) or if I had pressed/ blow dried their hair. I did this video to show you don't need any of those things to stretch, even type 4 hair:). I'm going to do a stretch video on my hair and really show my shrinkage before hand. Maybe if your mum sees that she'll be a believer. :)
@GirlsLoveYourCurls
@GirlsLoveYourCurls 12 жыл бұрын
Not really. When I do the first stretch and leave it in for a week, I pretty much get the same result as I showed in the 'center view' video comparison, not quite as soft and not as much movement. BUT, if after the 1st stretch you add in the coconut oil and comb it through, it comes pretty close. The way I wore my hair in the intro was after one stretch and some coconut oil, which for me was enough (truth be told, I didn’t feel like waiting for the second stretch before filming the intro :).

I know and I missed doing them! Someone else mentioned that here's my response - My time is so limited these days so I decided that what little time I do have is probably best spent getting hair ideas, tips and information out there to mums and caretakers. I'm changing my format so that any skits I have time to do will stand alone in another segment. That way I don't hold up hair videos, because I don't have time to finish a skit. - I hope you understand :).

Thank you! I just realized I cut out the spray bottle tip! :/ Well, when I wash their hair it's MUCH easier to work with it while it's still wet. I use the spray bottle (with water and a little leave-in conditioner) to re-wet if the hair has dried out some. I use Giovanni's Direct Leave in conditioner. You can get it online from Massage Warehouse. They sell 1 liter bottles for around $12. :)

Ha ha! Thank you! I sometimes leave it in for about a week - 2 weeks maximum. I don't like to go longer than a week because after the 1st week hair can get tangled in the thread and it takes much longer to remove. To be honest I wore my hair like this ALL the time as a child, so it's hard for me to feel like a grown up wearing it like this....lol. I would braid in much smaller sections if I wanted to wear it as a style. I plan on doing a demo on my hair at some point. Thanks for watching!!! xx

Bonjour!! Comment ça-va? Sorry, that's the extent of my secondary school French. lol :). I use this exact technique on my own hair. Admittedly, I don't take the time to do it as neatly as shown in the video (crooked/uneven parts etc), so I can't wear it out like the girls do, but it does the job and I get a great stretch. Try it and see. Do it over a weekend. It will be messy at first, just have a few cute hats and scarves handy for if you need to pop out during the process. You will improve. :)
@GirlsLoveYourCurls

It all depends on the thickness of your hair. If it's fine you could probably get away with less braids, with the same results. If it's very thick you'll still get a stretch, but not as much as if you did more braids. Sometimes I'll do four braids on each side and that gives me enough stretch. When I've only done 4 total, it doesn't have the same effect. Try it and see and let me know how you get on. :)

It all depends on your hairs length, thickness and texture. Just to give you an idea, it probably took 35 mins to do my oldest daughter’s 1st stretch and closer to 44-50 mins to do my youngest. The second stretch took less than half the time, since I used the same parts and the tread was already cut to size.

Hello! No, I don't really. I've done it a couple of times, but in hindsight it probably wasn't necessary. I keep their hair in protective styles 95% of the time, so their ends are very well preserved. If I saw that their ends looked weathered or they had a lot of split ends or knots, I would trim, but so far we're in the clear :).

Welcome!!! Thanks for joining us :). To answer your questions, no I've never given my girls relaxers. It's difficult for me to know if that's why you're not retaining length. For us the biggest keys to retaining length have been keeping hair moisturized, protective styling and minimal manipulation. I don't use ralaxers because I prefer to stay away from harsh chemicals. I do believe our hair is thicker and healthier as a result. Hopefully your grandmother will find our channel helpful :). xx

This is beautiful Nadine!!! My 2 year old daughter's hair seems a very similar texture. I am definitely a beginner as I have very straight hair myself. I think the African threading looks absolutely gorgeous in and of itself as a style but I also like the stretching. Do you ever do traditional braids after the stretching? My daughter's hair isn't very long yet, so leaving it natural the braids are super short. I imagine if I could pull this off that I could do much longer braids. THANKS!

I don't know if you know this, but they also sell the big sizes of the Deeper Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner at TJ Maxx(amongst other types like the 50:50 balance, Tea Tree Triple Treat, etc.). They're also around $13. I wouldn't advice purchasing the large Deeper Moisture shampoo because it doesn't resemble the same consistency as the small shampoo they normally sell for $8. The conditioner is the real stuff, no doubt about it. Happy shopping! :)

hum I don't agree with the saying we disregarded it because it is seen as a sign of poverty. That is absolutely not true. At least I can speak for my country where is still very much done for women that keep their natural hair. It is mostly relaxed hair women that do not use it when they graduate from school. Just to say that you cannot be generalizing all Africans. And this is not only in my country I've observed this.And wigs do not change anything to that. :)

it is quite interesting how the world just goes. This styles are sooo common in Africa and by the time the blow drier and all those electronic stuffs came on the market, africans started to disgard their ways of taking care of their hair. It is starded to be seeb as a sign of poverty, when u choose to use the theading to detangle and style ur hair and not blow dryer and some wigs! It is funny to see that actually after trying all those things that were bad for us, we'r going back to the roots.

She would just gather all the threaded pieces together and tie them at the ends. But I love the way you gathered them here. It actually makes a neat polished look and looks great on your girls. Will have to show this to my mom and try it on my kids some day!

I know that African Hair Threading is an ancient practice and that many young girls from the West Indian and African culture had it done on their hair growing up - whether they grew up in the United States or elsewhere. But I believe it's safe to say that in the United States this practice was and is not as commonly done on Black American girls. Even though lots of people have done it, YOU deserve credit for popularizing it on KZbin and giving clear, friendly, fun demonstrations.

Her daughter's hair is extremely long and soft looking so I doubt if the threading technique has any ill effects. I think as long as the hair strands are well moisturized and you comb the hair through by starting at the ends then you should be okay. Blow drying leaves my hair very dry and I will try this once I take my flat twists out. Not sure I will be doing the 2nd threading part though as my hair is short and I will have to make much smaller parts to achieve a good stretch i think.
