I used to have a nail request black lab that was bigger then your average at about 160, Just putting a slip lead on him he would try to bite and show teeth. during the nails he would try to alligator roll on the table to the point that he would move the entire table and growl show teeth just from trying to touch his paw, did the nails like that for about 2 years with no improvement. The parents didn't understand when I told them they needed to see a vet from now on and work with him at home. With how breeding and some breeders are there are cases were some dogs unfortunately get bad traits that can get worse the older they are, and can need more then just a strong personality, a lot of patience, and knowledge, they need extensive training and work at a young age or it can be nearly impossible at a later age.

@@fvckingvillains 160lb lab, you sure it was pure? Sounds like it was mixed with some sort of mastiff. Unless it was a very overweight purebred lab. Labs are usually 60-80lb give or take. Not even Akitas get to 160lb, and they’re already huge at 100-130lb.

That's the difference between an Akita that is perfectly fine with who's working with them and one that doesn't quite trust the person. The last thing you want to do is try to be touching an Akita that doesn't quite trust you. You know when they like you because they stop really caring that you're around or at least outwardly showing that they don't like you.

Slight correction, Akitas weren't bred for protection but hunting. They were even used for hunting bears. Their job was to taunt the bear until the hunter had a good aim at the bear. A pretty fearless breed to go head to head with a bear, so a healthy dose of caution is definitely a smart way to go with grooming them. Kuma's owner probably knows all this, seeing as they chose to name him "Bear" in Japanese.

(This is not a story meant to represent all Akitas. Show caution with any large animal.) My uncle had an American Akita who I grew up with. He communicated by crying and he was the world's biggest baby. I could hug him, put my face up to his, and never once even while brushing him (Which he hated), did he even so much as nip at me. He was perfectly behaved, although he did chew up some furniture and books when he was a puppy. He hated hats and gloves and would bark at you if you wore a hat until you took it off, and would try to gently pull gloves off your hands with his teeth. He liked keeping people in one place, and would bark and order us to stay together in the garage. He once found a kitten, and could tell it was an infant and a pet, not prey, so he picked it up in his mouth, walked to the nearest person, and started crying until someone found and took it. He raised a husky as his own pup and she became the second best dog I've ever met. His name was Roshi. He was the single greatest dog I've ever met, and knowing how Akitas usually behave, he only gets more impressive.

We acquired two dogs while living in Japan, both were Akita mixes. The male was more mild tempered with other people, the female would not tolerate any other people to approach or touch her. They both were super protective and loving of members of the family. We brought them back to the US with us and they lived to 13 and 14 years. The male was particularly attached to my Dad and after my Dad died he would become excited anytime my mother pulled out items that had belonged to him.(leather wallet, watch, etc).

It can be important to remember dogs may behave differently when their owner is around than if they aren't. They can be a bit stressed out being away from their "pack" or may try to establish dominance with new people/animals in the absence of their own pack leader. Just take that into account leaving them alone or walking them off leash away from familiar areas so that they don't get separated.

Many years ago, I volunteered with a woman who took in American Akitas that had been rescued from puppy mills, and rehabbed them. I remember the physical and shut-down emotional state they were in at intake, and how long it took to overcome those trust issues. Coming from that background, to seeing this gorgeous, healthy, well-adjusted boy having a wonderful spa day is kind of a healing experience for me. I would love to see Mrs. Kuma have her day, too. Thank you for sharing these.

I have a half Chow-chow half American Akita. Entirely pure black beside his beautiful amber eyes, purple tongue, and white teeth. Got him from the shelter. Went in to look for a cat, locked eyes with him and it was over. No idea who had him before me but he's one of the most well mannered, well trained, and polite dogs I've ever had. Everything said here is entirely true about them. Docile when crated and peaceful when left free to roam the house but will trash my entire room when left in there alone. Sociable with other dogs and plays a little rough but has never outright attacked another dog. Almost never barks, but whistles and whines happily at me when I come home from work Absolute snuggly baby with certain people, completely avoids others Has his own spot on the couch and gets upset when people sit there (He'll sit in front of them and stare until they move, then jump in it) a gentle soul that's super great with kids Extra picky eater I had to change all the door handles in my house to knobs because he learned how to open them. Loves scratches, ear-noogies, and brushies HATES baths. He refuses to eat whenever I'm not at the house He's my best boy and I love him

These are powerful dogs. Once at a dog park with a big male Akita in the doggie crowd, they started playing too rough and the Akita started to show aggression. His owner jumped right in, yanked this gigantic bear dog out of the crowd, held him down on the ground with his weight and started raising this voice at him sternly to stop. I was SHOCKED and thought the owner was really extreme, should I be worried of this tough discipline? Later I learned more and understood the magnitude of this dogs power. Btw this owner loved his dog, I later found him laying on the grass with him alone stroking him lovingly as if he was apologizing and explaining to the Akita what happened like a father to a son.

@newfoundmoralclarity Жыл бұрын
In an ideal world the Akita is perfectly trained and simply reacts to commands under any circumstances. That is rarely the case though, especially if the Akita is reacting to some kind of provocation. Akitas are extremely headstrong and stubborn. Obviously without being abusive, it is absolutely essential that the Akita recognizes its owner's dominance. Sometimes that requires a show of physical dominance and a stem voice. This particular breed demands it, and they will generally only allow one person on earth to fully exert dominance.
@sarahholland2600
@sarahholland2600 Жыл бұрын
If he had to resort to that, the training wasn't done properly. The lady on Its Me or the Dog, Victoria Stilwell , has worked with every aggressive breed & never been bitten: using reward based training. Whereas Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, who uses outdated dominance theory is ALWAYS getting bitten. Both have YT channels as well as TV shows.

@KATIE Bad owner, not bad dog. Because they're a handful, you need to spend huge amounts of time with them. If that's not done, you're not the alpha they respect. Just one of the pack. Certain breeds are just more likely to have certain traits you need to handle. If you don't handle anything, don't expect them to be cute little lap dogs. Applies to every breed. The least well trained dogs are usually the tiny ones. Barking at and attacking everything, because their owners look at them more as an accessory than a dog

I got concerned enough to say his name as clearly he could not smell me yet. He recognized my voice and immediately changed demeanor. Pretty wild. After that Akita passed, the owner got a rescue that is a straight up coward. I have to make sure I do not scare her instead of the other way around. She was likely neglected more than anything. Sad. But she knows she is loved and has warmed up to people in her circle. If you get her wound up then you can see some Akita traits come out. They will nip you from behind!

My Kuma looked just like yours, only he was just a tad darker in the face! I fell in love with the breed in the late 80's after seeing them for the first time at a dog show and was stunned by their beauty. I also fell in love with the name Kuma, only to later find out a LOT of people used that name because it means "bear" in Japanese, and they do kinda resemble bears at times! They are the most loyal, beautiful, sweet, yet at times the most fierce dog you can own. My Kuma didn't like to cuddle that often and hated his head touched. But my female, Mika, wouldn't stop leaning on and licking people! My son loves to tell people how protective she was of him after he was born. When he was 4 or 5, one of his dad's friends, thinking no one was home, jumped over our locked gate to get into our backyard so he could borrow a tool. My son was playing and jabbering away to her when he said all of a sudden she nudged him behind her, started growling with her fur raised along her nape and then started stalking towards the guy. I had just gone into the house for a second when I heard her bark once and knew something was wrong. I had never seen a grown man shriek and jump back over a fence so fast in my life! He later said he thought our son was playing with a bear! They are wonderful dogs. You just need to train them well, learn about the breed and understand their idiosyncrasies and you'll have a happy life together.

I had an Akita puppy as a kid, and he was a very good boy. Very good with us kiddos. My current family dog is just as gentle, a little overweight, and never ever bites or growls. One time he stepped in an ant hill and we were trying to tend to his paws, but he was in a lot of pain. To tell us to stop, he would swing around as if to bite, but then stop and lick our hands instead. We didnt push our luck though 😬

I wish we had a groomer like you for our Romeo. He’s the sweetest most affectionate Akita we have ever had, but one time when we took him to the groomer (he was barely a year old) they lost him. He was lost for five days in the wilderness and on the verge of death when we found him. After that he only trusts us in the immediate family and is very wary of everything and everyone outside of it. We haven’t had him groomed since because we can’t trust anyone to take care of him, and we can’t trust him to behave well with strangers. It’s impossible for us to go on vacation and have a dog sitter. It’s challenging to even have people at the house. I wish Romeo could grow comfortable with other people, he’s such a wonderful dog that had such a traumatic experience. He deserved someone better like you to groom him that day.

Thank you for always being serious about different breeds! My mutt butt is nearly equal parts American PBT, Akita, and GSD (got him as a puppy, his mom & litter looked nothing like these breeds!) He's got the territorial, cautious, dignified behavior + high energy and playfulness. I likely wouldn't have adopted him had I known this breed mix, but thankfully I consider myself a well-informed, responsible dog owner. He is a great dog, but boy he required, and still requires, a lot of work to keep him a good boy. Thanks for sharing; he is so handsome!

I had an American Akita for 6 years, gentlest soul I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Amongst the other Akita's we knew - all of which held a regal sense of authority - Caboose was the goofiest teddy bear to ever goof. He barked exactly once, excitedly tippy-tapping for a ball to be thrown. He lived to talk however, playing or teasing him before food he would talk and huff about like a bear. Always knew when you weren't feeling the best, always willing to be cuddled or used as a pillow, always bubbly and playful. Best boy. Still got a picture of him in a hoodie after some hair/skin treatment very much sitting ON me.

@@Xsynth There is no such thing as a “love” bite. We score bites on a scale. Level one is nose punches, mouth grips (without any marks, holding rather than biting down). Anytime a dog nips even if it doesn’t break the skin, that is legally a bite. This behaviour must be addressed by a professional. If the dog bites someone, you are liable. A dog who does these small “bites” /behaviors, will escalate pretty quickly in the right circumstances. This s a dog that should be muzzled when there are visitors or restrained.
