That's the issue with crate engines is they are really a matter of convenience and that's not cheap. Even used engines they want as much as what you could buy another bike for, you can upgrade and rebuild cheaper than a crate. The early Ultima engines had an issue with a tapered bore in the cylinders, worked for a shop in Tucson late 90's early 00's. That doesn't seem to be an issue these days. If I were to buy an Ultima motor I'd pull the top end down and reassemble it myself. The only complaint I've heard in the past few years are head bolts not being torqued to spec, and that's about it. The Ultima engine with the Timken bearing is enough to convince me. Haven't heard of anyone check the pinion shaft runout on the Ultima but I'd bet it's better than H-D. S5S is not the same company that it was in the 60's all the way up until the early 00's. They're way over priced for what you get now.

Rebuilding can be a real pain, but it does save a lot of money over the crate engine. The crate engine is convenient, but if you were to try and build a engine to the exact specs of the 111 it would cost more. This would be a hard decision for me because I want an engine built for my style of riding. I want roughly 100 to 130 plus foot-pounds of torque between 2,000 and 4,000 RPMs which is easy to obtain. A bulletproof lower end that runs cool and is built to last. Peak horsepower is really not a concern of mine because I keep my revs at or below 4,000 but I would like to have 100 HP at or before 4,000 RPMs. A blueprinted engine from Kevin Baxter which he calls SkunkWorks would be tops on my list and more expensive than an S&S or FM but I'll be wrenching myself and saving a few bucks. I'm guessing that day is three to four years away but will be here before you know it. The toughest decision is how do I put 1 0r 2 grand a year aside for the build.

@GixxerFoo3 жыл бұрын
To me on a well taken care of Harley with 48K is nothing and up to 150K is correct for life expectancy on a well cared for engine. I would recommend inspecting and replacing your cam chain tensioners if needed at 48K though. A well cared for bike can run 100k easy barring any mechanical failure which is hard to predict and is possible with any machine. A lot of bikes that fail were due to abuse, poor maintenance etc. But if your bike had any factory defects it likely would of let go well before 48K.

I have a 2000 HD carbureted Screaming Eagle B motor which is now a 113 ci. If I wanted to go the LongBlock way, and go with a 95 ci, would that be possible? My pynion shaft is shot and I would like to keep the same serial numbers. Also, would the BlongBlock come with a new cranshaft and new pistons?

Harley is still doing the twin cams, they reuse your left crank case half which retains the vin. You get everything new except cams and the engine covers. You get a new crankshaft, pistons, cylinders bearings lifters etc, you just want to put your own cams in.

Any authorized S&S dealer would be able to perform the work on behalf of S&S. In some cases they may request the engine to be shipped back to them. I have a friend that actually had a S&S engine fail completely, they replaced it no questions asked and covered his costs.

When you update the cam l believe the Power Vision has a spot to input your cams specs. I know the FP3 has something similar. You would do that editing your current map and then auto tune it. That will get you running down the road, but if you want max power getting a dyno tune will get that power left on the table.

Can you tell me what a "B" motor and an "A" motor are? Thx.
@GixxerFoo2 жыл бұрын
The B motor has a internal counter balancer in the engine, this is only used on Softail twin cams since they are solid mounted to the frame. The A motor doesn't have an internal counter balancer, it is in the Dyna and Touring bikes with a rubber mounting system.

You didn’t mention what you can get in hp on Harley-Davidson crate engine I know nothing about motors just would like to keep Harley-Davidson, Harley-Davidson.
@GixxerFoo3 жыл бұрын
Getting a Harley long block is going to be stock horsepower, so roughly 65hp for the 88, 70ish for the 96 and a 103 will get you about 75hp. Now depending on what cams you went back with that's gonna be a lot more especially if you went with aftermarket cams. Aftermarket cams can get you close to or over 100hp on a 96 or 103.

So what about the ECM? If I take my 88 in my 06 Deluxe and change it to a 103, do I have to upgrade the ECM that came stock in the bike in 06?
@GixxerFoo3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you would need to have you're ECM flashed for the new engines requirements. Same thing if you did cams or a big bore kit, not a huge deal with a Power Vision on the Delphi EFI system.
There's quite a bit out there but it's tough to find Twin Cam crate engines, EVO's are all over the place since Harley didn't have the best patents on the Evo engine. They learned from that and applied better patents on the Twin Cam. Jim's I know and I believe S&S paid Harley for proprietary rights to build Twin Cams. Now that Ultima has one, I am thinking maybe some patents on the Twin Cam have expired, I couldn't see Ultima paying for rights but they may have.

@Carmichael58986 ай бұрын
That sucks! So no crate engine for me. 😂
@johnroethel55273 жыл бұрын
Up here in Ontario Canada, if you're rebuilding it yourself with Quality parts its a coin toss. Buying a crate motor is the cheaper way to go. S&S 111 is 10k cdn.
@GixxerFoo3 жыл бұрын
Even here in the States doing a high horsepower build like an S&S 111 can easily get you well over the cost of the crate engine. Then you don't have a warranty on the entire motor, just the individual parts. That can be a real hassle proving what part caused what and then you still gotta fix it. But with the S&S they are really good about making it right. I got a friend who has a S&S that completely blew up on him, no questions asked from S&S and they replaced it and covered his costs.

The thing is is you even a little mechanically inclined and can read you can rebuild any Harley engine in at the most a couple week ends. They haven't change significantly in 60 years. If you've ever built a Harley you can rebuild as soon as your machined parts come back. Two days .
@GixxerFoo3 жыл бұрын
That is very true, the bottom end on a Pan is basically the same on a Shovel and Evo. Twin Cam is a bit more complicated, but the Harley service manual is very in depth. It literally tells you the exact tools and step by step how to do the job, it even has the torque spec for every nut and bolt.
@davidfellows62503 жыл бұрын
@@GixxerFoo I used to call myself the shovel guy. I've built some beautifull engines. I've got a twin cam now and dont see the need to build Harley engines any more. You can dump 20k in your bike and still be a super sluggish next to my kaw h2 r . My Harley does a different thing and does it well 70mph @ 2200 rpms all day and I feel good when I get there 10 hours latter. The 103 has enough power for that, you still need to fix Harley's f%^k ups ie help the engine breathe, oil pump,cam plate ect. But the days of building shot rod Harley doesn't mean anything anymore. When I was building shovels they were the fastest thing on the road but it wasn't long before Yamaha built the r1 . Untill Harley's technology catches up..... have two bikes one that goes fast and one that goes long.

I'd like to know what state in recent history determines a bike is stolen when the VIN is different from the engine serial number. My guess is... none. IF they do, it sure would be interesting to see that S.O.P and I know it would change when they paid out big time. So if some agency takes your bike just for THAT reason, you should retain an attorney and enjoy the outcome. Now, if it's a DUI or something bad is found, and the rider is arrested for something then yes the bike is towed. We've all heard guys swear their bikes were towed for no reason... sure it was.

Police Officers have a lot of discretion, they are judge jury and executioner on the side of the road. You get one hell bent something ain't right you might be able to get a supervisor to over rule. You can get it straightened out later but still cost some money proving it. That's why l say keep a copy of the engine MSO and receipt on the bike or on you in case the bike was stolen.
