I applaud John for being honest with his daughters on such uneasy subject. I promise you, it’ll pay off. Bringing me up in Soviet Union my father was always honest with me on his view of the Soviet tyranny, on their lies about West-the-enemy-of-Russia, telling me about fantastic US Land Lease help during the war and after, on Afghanistan war and other things. Yes, sometimes I felt different to other children. But with age I learned to identify peers of my kind and to feel less alone. When changes came to Russia I was amongst the first to be delighted about it and embrace it. After moving to the UK, I was much more opened to the western culture, which helped me to become more successful and appreciative of the western achievements. I’ve always been so grateful to my dad for his honesty and bravery to explain things to me against what I was learning in Soviet school. Thank you Glen for another brilliant conversation.

Re: Scott Adams: I'm no fan of Scott (he's a bit arrogant and a self-described narcissist), but you seem to be missing some context on his comments and I'm curious how/if it would change your thoughts on the matter. My quick summary of how I understand his perspective/goals of the statement: 1) he has expertise in hypnotism and persuasion...he was trying to gather attention to lead to a productive convo. He is also a lefty/liberal who says he has spent much of his time helping the "black community" 2) the goal of this attention-gathering outrage was to reach more people to give tools of success to black people 3) the poll he referenced was bad, but the results are clearly on display (anti-white attitude gaining popularity) 4) if a group of people doesn't like you, you should get away from that group 5) pointing to the difference in how we can talk about race (what white can say about black and vice versa) and how it's all racism. I'm not sticking up for him and don't agree with how he went about this, I'm just curious what your take would be (if at all different) given his perspective/aim. Thanks to the both of you...long time fan

The cold prickly comment in between you reminded me of the climate and culture of a lot of the Woke elect, and is a solid reminder of why I'm here. I don't have answers for this coming election, I feel quite undecided (or if I'm being honest I'm a lot of "Holy fuck what am I going to land on?!") but that aside, judging by your comments and of course getting to enjoy Glenn and John's discussions I consider myself very lucky to be in a loose band of estimable and well spoken and nuanced and thoughtful people. 8:52 "to the manner born" I'd never heard this idiom before. I really like it. The definition for those who are interested: "Accustomed from birth to a particular behavior or lifestyle, as in At a high-society function she behaves as though to the manner born, but we know she came from very humble circumstances . This term was invented by Shakespeare in Hamlet. Referring to the King's carousing in Danish style, Hamlet says (1:4): "Though I am native here And to the manner born, it is a custom More honor'd in the breach than the observance." The manner in this expression was later sometimes changed to manor, "the main house of an estate," and the idiom's sense became equated with "high-born" (and therefore accustomed to luxury), a way in which it is often used today."

It's so complex, it really does require a phenomenal amount of time to figure out what's really going on, and if you get anything wrong the ideologues will come after you. This discussion fascinates me. Glenn and John express their thoughts and feelings about coming to terms with what they genuinely believe, and how academic cliques played a part in their intellectual development. The initial part where they discuss who will last struck me as a little petty. "Who started it" is not the question of someone who has worked through their issues completely. And there's honesty and vulnerability in the willingness to be open about such hurts. I once watched a video where John asked Ta-nehisi Coates about the attack. TC owned that it was wrong and apologized. I wonder now why John is holding on to the slight, although certainly I do not know the whole story. It's hard to describe and defend a position and withstand the social cost. As John said, it can be lonely. And, the cost of self-betrayal, to such substantive individuals as these two, would be too much to bear. I am eagerly awaiting Glenn's book. So grateful for these biweekly sessions. Many thanks to you both along with your production staff.

John and Glenn, if you pursue truth, you will always have trouble fitting into any major "tribe." The tribe is about comfort, belonging, security, knowing you have agreement with your fellows. Truth is often disruptive, inconvenient, and divisive. Truth is a pain in the ass, and people that pursue it are a bigger pain in the ass. I don't always agree with you guys, but the fact that you have trouble fitting in with established tribes may be part of why I watch you. I don't need to listen to the tribal elders of the various groups, I know what they will say before they open their yaps. This is a very interesting discussion between the two of you. Although I am a hard-core independent, I subscribe to this channel because I appreciate your honesty and logical and unemotional approach to your opinions. Having been born in 1944, I grew up in the 40s and 50s and came of age in the 1960s and was very much influenced by the Civil Rights era and of course Martin Luther King. I was of a mind that we had done the heavy lifting and it wasjust a matter of time before the the African Americans would take advantage of the opportunities that had been denied them and a thriving and prosperous middle class would emerge. This, of course, did happen, but not to the extent we had hoped. The sad thing about your discussion on the video is the degree to which you both felt compelled be part of the Black liberal narrative despite your own personal experience and beliefs. The striking part about that is the vast difference it is for white people. I do not know any white Caucasian who thinks of himself primarily in those terms and we don’t experience and group pressures along racial lines. So, to hear the extent to which you did have those experiences is disheartening for several reasons. First because it is not consistent with the desired end-goal of which MLK spoke. Second, because , if race is the primary consideration in all human interactions, the we will always be speaking from and to a position of power and inequality. That will lead to perpetual turmoil and eventually to decay and rot of our society. Earlier in my response I said that after the impact of the Civil Rights movement, I felt it was just a matter of time before things were universally better but, of course, I was wrong. Things haven’t evolved as I thought they would. In fact, the society, as a whole, seems to have gone backwards and perfectly reasonable white people are saying things like “stay away from black people” and 60% Black people tell pollsters that all white people are White Supremacists. If anybody promoting this narrative of divisiveness thinks this is leading to a better society, they are seriously delusional. So, I will continue to listen to your enlightened discourse and hope that leaders of this ugly narrative do, as you suggest, whither away into oblivion and we can grow into a society that enlightened leaders envision. Keep up the good work gentlemen.

I think it's good that McWhorter clarifies his politic al perspective. As a progressive, I think other progressives NEED to hear dissenting views like his. As a white, lifelong progressive anti-racism activist--who was canceled after a (false) accusation of being "white supremacist" due to questioning one individual case of police killing an armed Black man, I am grateful for these 2 men. They've helped me in a process of clarification of my own understandings, that had already been gong on for several years before I was canceled 2 years ago. Life is far more ambivalent and complicated than just a "power politics" analysis. Racism remains real--but, it's certainly NOT the absolute determining factor that they were 55 years ago.

Interesting conversation, thank you gentlemen. I'm reading a book called The Courage to Be Disliked. Four years ago, I was reading a book called Love Your Enemies. Interesting to walk in two worlds. Funny that as a white woman, I found myself reacting to the Scott Adams situation by making a list of all the people he's dismissing by thinking that all people of a given hue are the same/think the same. That's the banana peel that people continue to slip on. Viewpoint diversity and intellectual humility continue to be in all too short a supply.

I'm not familiar with the 1950's southerner mentality but I do see it as a scarcity mentality resentment against any non-black woman who is stealing from a perceived limited pool of admirable black men. Personally I think that multiple mixed race women are usually striking, an illustration of 'throw everything into the mixing bowl!'

39:25 Oh no you can't. That's the whole thing about gender identity theory and the quasi-religious behaviour surrounding it. If you took the MOST "pro-trans", TWAW, if this male says they're a female then it must be taken at face value and they must have every right that would be afforded to a female, etc., but say it's unfair to females if a male races against them... That person would be vilified and excommunicated. They have sinned against the church. I'm not kidding. They leave NO room for anyone on their side to object to anything, any part of it. I have seen it again and again - it happened to me. Where I started out phrasing everything with the utmost care, making sure it would be well understood I accepted t* people were a vulnerable minority, needed special health care, that it is incredibly cruel and damaging to mental health to misgender, etc. - but that males competing against females was fundamentally unfair... and wouldn't you know it, I became instantly indistinguishable from a far-right bigot calling for t* genocide. These were people on the left, which I had thought was my home. The t* issue has its high priests who dictate what positions we all must hold about gender identity theory and womanhood and feminism if we are to be anything but a far-right bigot. And wow, does that fall apart quickly. I'm actually really glad I collided with this subject in such a way, because it really exposed to me what the left had turned into. I don't think of myself as on the left anymore simply because the reality denial became too much, once you start to look into it, you can see it pervades everything on the left. You are socially assassinated and ostracised if you deviate even a hair from the orthodoxy. I think John calls it a cult... yes, it absolutely is.

I would walk up with all the composure I could muster, ask if I could interrupt you for a moment of your time... and, with gratitude, convey to you how much help, knowledge, and healing you've helped plant and grow in my life. I'm not ashamed, scared or... i was terrified... at being labeled a racist... no more. I'm an American and a human being and it's "not one step back" .. for me. I'm pushing back... Swiftian satire... ridicule them into oblivion.. that's my mission.

I wish Glenn would get into more debates about matters unrelated to race. E.g. foreign policy, NATO, Ukraine, climate change and environmental policies, even cultural stuff like marriage and transgenderism etc etc etc. Glenn is a deep thinker and I'd like to see him debating a more varied set of topics.

I can't wait for Glenn's memoir. I hope he does an event in our home town. I would never bother him if I saw him out in public because I feel everyone deserves their own private lives regardless of how public aspects of their career might be. I sympathize with Glenn looking back on his life and feeling like he betrayed others with his views. I am bisexual. I was once very active in my community but I married a woman. I love my family but I can't help but feel guilty at times. I might as well be straight. I also disagree with lgbt issues today. It's very challenging, no one wants to hear from me. I'm a nobody anyway but even if I wasn't, I married a woman and challenge the mainstream left's views on trans issues. I might as well be a maga person to so many even though that couldn't be further than the truth. I truly loath the lack of nuance in political discourse.

I appreciate you bringing up the trans issue. There is a lot to discuss here, and not the least being the competitive sports aspects. I hope that one day soon you two will decide to tackle this issue. It is worthy of your time and consideration. In the meantime, voices like Helen Joyce, Jordan Peterson and Jennifer Bilek, among many others , are worth listening to, I believe. Many thanks again to you both.

I highly recommend McWhorter’s books. Read “Woke Racism” if you never get to the others. I’m devouring “Losing the Race” and have “Winning the Race” standing by to read next. I also have Glenn Loury’s “The Anatomy of Racial Inequality” standing by. Thomas Chatterton Williams’ slender book “Self-Portrait in Black and White” is also terrific.

You guys are fun and interesting. I'm not as old as Glenn and not as young as John and like to think of myself as a thoughtful person. I don't know how you two are ever confused with conservatives especially on social issues. You may not be "perfect" to those who have more emphatic lefty-ish beliefs but that doesn't make you conservative. Glenn's take on economics is often "conservative" because that's an easy silo to put him in, but in my mind it's more just standard or establishment than it is conservative or right wing. I find you both quite reasonable and open to opposing ideas and that you represent more than black intellectuals who dissent from the herd on lots issues. I appreciate that you insist on discussing the realities of some difficult issues like crime, social breakdown, academic rigor, the downsides of affirmative action, and the like. It doesn't make you a reactionary to discuss and evaluate things honestly and without distortion. In my view it makes you people who are interested in approaching these clear problems with a mind toward actually doing something to try and solve them in the real world not just in our aspirations. You can't solve any problem if you don't identify it honestly and recognize the reality of that problem. I think you represent lots of people who are thoughtful, more intellectual than not, but also not so subsumed into the culture of academia that you have abandoned all common sense merely to be seen as virtuous which would be very easy to do. The number of those who see your views as representing a viewpoint they share reaches beyond "black intellectuals" and "conservative white intellectuals" but also working people, plain middle class people of every race and many other categories. You're on the right path. Keep it up gentlemen!

Regarding Adams: Has anyone considered that a comic strip writer might use satire, a la J Swift’s, “A Modest Proposal,” in response to main stream discourse (and specifically the poll he addressed in his rant) on the subject of race-based attitudes? I.e., Was he serious, or not? Regardless, at this point, which I can only hope is temporary, I think we are all too politically stupid to spot the difference.
